All-State Games: Outfield Analysis
December 7, 2017
On Saturday, October 28, some of the top talent in Texas met in Tomball to compete in the PBR Texas All-State Games. The event featured players from all four high school classes, including 2018 & 2019 grads, along with a select few 2020 & 2021 grads. Here is the outfield analysis from that event.
John Tyler 'JT' Mounce OF / OF / Cypress Christian, TX / 2019Even though the Oklahoma State commit spent most of the fall on the football field, he still managed to blaze a 6.61 60-yard dash on Saturday morning of the All-State Games. The twitchy, 5-foot-10, 155-pounder is still filling out physically, but shows the athleticism and ball skills to be a true center-fielder at the next level. His 86 mph arm from the outfield features some carry while being athletic, and will more than play as he moves forward. Hitting from the left side, Mounce sets up with a wide base and his hands held below his back shoulder. Utilizing a small stride, his hands with a quick hand coil before whipping through the zone on an uphill path with a very loose finish. He sprayed line drives all over the field while flashing some potential for pull side power in the future. However, I was most impressed by the way that he used his speed as he stayed within himself at the plate, and constantly put the pressure on the defense to make plays. Mounce has all the tools to be a mainstay in the top of the lineup for the Cowboys, while creating headaches for pitchers and catchers. |
Austin Plante OF / 1B / Lake Travis, TX / 2019TCU recruit. Plante passes the eye test with his strong, broad shouldered, high-waisted, 6-foot-4, 225-pound frame. The junior is a solid athlete with all-around feel for both the outfield and first base. A left-handed hitter, Plante showed off his strength during batting practice by driving balls deep into centerfield with thump and carry (90 mph). Ball jumps off his bat, easy bat speed, simple swing with strength, projectable hitter at the next level with more power likely to come. Plante plays through the ball with smooth rhythm and timing, quick exchange and easy gather. Arm works well from a short, high-¾ arm stroke, accurate throws with carry in the outfield at 89 mph. Good footwork around the bag at first base during the game. With his size, athleticism and strong left-handed bat, Plante is a great addition to the TCU lineup. |
Riley Lambert OF / Midway, TX / 2018Rankings StateRank: 157 / POS: 23
Lambert is a fast-twitch athlete with a lean-muscular frame at 5-foot-11, 160-pounds. All fall, Lambert has separated himself as one of the top uncommitted outfielders in the 2018 class. He can handle the bat from the left side, is a sub-7 runner (6.89, 6.97 in two events this fall), and has a plus arm in the outfield (89 mph). During batting practice, the left-handed hitter showed a relaxed, line-drive approach with loose hands and smooth rhythm. He has a flat path, quick hands, and whips the barrel through the zone with relative ease. Showed up on time and peppered the middle of the field with hard liners to the outfield, as well as getting to balls on the inner half with an exit velocity of 88 mph off the tee. During the game, Lambert smoked a fly ball to centerfield off a two-strike curveball. In the outfield, Lambert moves with easy athleticism and rhythm, clean exchange into his crow hop, long arm stroke from a high slot with a quick hand back to front. Good carry and accuracy with a top velocity of 89 mph. |
Tyler Douglas OF / LHP / John Cooper, TX / 2020Rankings StateRank: 50 / POS: 4
Douglas has an aggressive mentality, and quick-twitch, lean-strong frame at 5-foot-11, 155-pounds. A gritty player that does everything full speed, he shows real presence and moxy in the box. Aggressive lower half transfer, uphill path gets the barrel on plane early, quick-strong hands through the zone, whips the barrel with a loose-high finish. In the outfield, Douglas plays through the ball with confidence and good rhythm as he gathers to make accurate throws to the dish at 85 mph with a quick, loose arm swing. A 7.16 runner, Douglas is already drawing the attention of college coaches and entered our ranking at No. 50 in the Texas 2020 class. Look for big things from him in the future. |
Luke Hammond OF / 1B / The Woodlands, TX / 2019Rankings StateRank: 78 / POS: 12
Hammond has a ton of projection still left in his already strong, athletic 6-foot-3, 190-pound frame. The Houston recruit started the day by running a 6.99 60-yard dash. In the box, the right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open, stacked stance, then loads back easy as he triggers his hands back, creating good separation as he lands into a short stride. Flat, direct path to the ball with strength at contact and an exit velocity of 93 mph. Drove the ball well during batting practice with gap power and more to come. In the outfield, Hammond plays through the ball with rhythm, clean footwork and a quick exchange into a short over the top arm stroke with a top velocity of 80 mph. All-in-all, the junior is a projectable corner outfielder with a lot of offensive upside. |

Missouri State recruit. Kemp is an all around athletic, aggressive player at 6-foot, 165-pounds with a lean-muscular frame. Was on the barrel all day, lacing line drives through the middle of the field during batting practice, flashing power to the pull side with an exit velocity of 88 mph. During the game, Kemp scorched a single to left field and hustled to second base without breaking stride as the outfielder bobbled the ball. In his second at-bat, he hammered a fly ball to centerfield. In the outfield, Kemp threw 84 mph to the plate with carry and accuracy. Ran a 7.24 60-yard dash. |
Jacob Wilson OF / George Ranch, TX / 2019Rankings StateRank: 158 / POS: 32
Wilson is a fun player to watch as he has an aggressive mentality on the field and a fast-twitch, athletic frame at 5-foot-6, 135-pounds. The uncommitted junior ran a 6.81 60-yard dash but its easy to see that he plays faster than that as he gets to full speed and changes direction quickly. The right-handed hitter has loose, strong hands and smooth rhythm at the plate, helping him create good leverage and strength at contact with an exit velocity of 85 mph. Gap approach with line drive power right now, but expect that improve as he continues to gain varsity at-bats this season. Can see him fitting in nicely in the top of the order in college. Moves well in the outfield, rhythm through the ball, quick footwork, clean exchange, comes through the ball aggressively. Accurate arm to go with a quick arm stroke and a top velocity of 86 mph. |

Although not done developing physically, he stands 5-foot-9, 135-pounds, with a lean, athletic frame and twitchy tools. He started the day by posting a 6.95 60-yard dash. Offensively, Bernal’s swing just works, he has a great feel for the barrel and makes hard contact. Strides forward, lands balanced, easy weight transfer, short path into the zone, good extension through contact with a loose, high finish as he sits down into his legs. Although his exit velocity is only 82 mph, he has quick hands and shows good power to the pull side gap during batting practice. Loose, quick arm swing works well from back to front with a max velocity of 80 mph. |
Tommy Ivey OF / 3B / Kingwood Park, TX / 2019Rankings StateRank: 113 / POS: 20
Ivey could be the biggest sleeper of the ‘19 class because of his natural energy and quick twitch frame at 6-foot-2, 171-pounds. Ranked No. 113 in Texas, the right-handed hitter does not get cheated. Even though he has an aggressive hack, he makes consistent, hard contact. He is a sub-7 runner (6.92) and also generates a ton of leverage with a natural hitch in his hands, and uphill path. Every time we see this guy he barrels up the baseball and puts together quality at-bats. Although his exit velocity is only 82 mph off the tee, don’t be fooled, this kid has real presence in the box and shows up on time with the barrel. In the outfield, Ivey throws from an over the top slot with a loose arm stroke at 86, further solidifying his all-around athleticism. |
