Rankings Release: Class of 2021
December 12, 2019
After a busy summer and fall across the Empire State and on the National scene, the staff at Prep Baseball Report - New York is happy to announce an update of the 2021 rankings.
We have expanded the Class of 2021 to nearly 200 players along with an expansive "Player to Watch" list which is loaded with individuals ready to make the next jump.
Today we will break down the Top 10, followed by the full list (190+ players) and a look at the Player to Watch list:
Class of 2021 / Top 10
Joe Mack C / Williamsville East, NY / 2021Mack has had stranglehold on the number one spot since our first release. He put on a show this past summer at the Area Code games in California, handles elite pitching when in the box, gap power translates with wood and his skill set behind the plate continues to allow him to develop into a top tier defender. Number two ranked catcher in the country; Clemson commit.
Casey Saucke II SS / RHP / Greece Athena, NY / 2021Saucke has a steady hold within the Top 5 within the state since his breakout efforts at the 2018 NYS Games and Future Games. The two-way threat features a balanced stroke with pull side pop (more to come). FB works mid to upper 80's on the mound. Virginia commit.
Chris Sleeper RHP / 3B / Rush Henrietta, NY / 2021Sleeper arguably had the most impressive summer with lights outs efforts at the NYS Games and two strong outings at the Future Games, running his FB up to 88-89 with sink. The physical 6-foot-2 180 pounder also features a power change at 77-79 and tilting slider at 76-79 MPH. West Virginia commit.
Jack Sullivan RHP / SS / Carmel, NY / 2021Sullivan burst on the scene during last year's preseason tour and never took his foot off the gas pedal. Strong outings at both the NYS Games and Future Games secured his verbal commitment to UCONN. Sullivan works 86-89 with occasional cut from a wiry, athletic 5-foot-11 170 pound build. Breaking ball settles in at 72-75 with a fading change up at 76-77 MPH.
Carson Cotugno RHP / SS / Amsterdam, NY / 2021Long and lean with a tremendous upside is the breakdown on Cotugno. After a strong scholastic season he continued to shine with efforts at the NYS Games and with his start vs. Team CT in the Future Games that had the Power 5 conferences in hot pursuit. The Wake Forest commit checks in at a high-waisted 6-foot-1 170 pounds. Cotugno sits 86-88, touching 89 with an easy effort. Slider showed two planes at the Future Games at 77-80 MPH.
Justine Rodriguez RHP / George Washington, NY / 2021Rodriguez possesses a scary upside. The slightly built NYC resident is listed at 5-foot-10 165 generous pounds. Was 89-91 MPH this summer and recently clipped a 93 MPH FB at the Metro Scout Day this fall. Slider continues to improve and is staring to show it's teeth at 77-79 MPH. Recently committed to Florida International.
Robert Evans LHP / 1B / All Hallows, NY / 2021Another NYC product, Evans possesses some of the easiest arm action the state along with Coutugno and Michael Kennedy (#1 ranked 2022, LHP and LSU commit). Evans can cruise with comfort in the mid 80's but also popped several 88's and 89's at the NYS Games this past June. The Eastern Kentucky commit features a sweeping 2-to-10 CB in the upper 60's with a same plane change in the 77-79 MPH range.
Gage Ziehl RHP / 3B / Penfield, NY / 2021Ziehl, a Miami commit in 2018, continues to impress on both sides of the ball. Was up to 89 MPH this spring and has always brought his high end offensive game to the table. The Rochester area player is a sturdy 6-foot-0 200 pounds and can spin an above average breaking ball.
Marcus Smith SS / OF / All Hallows , NY / 2021Smith is one of only two position players to crack the top ten along with Mack. The elite athlete consistently runs his 60 in the 6.65-6.9 range and features soft hands with a clean exchange up the middle. Can handle SS but may profile better at 2B or in the OF at the collegiate level. Offensive skill set will allow him to hit for average and power. Recent Liberty University commit.
Roman Kimball RHP / SS / New Hartford, NY / 2021Kimball continues his steady rise, the CNY RHP exploded this summer at the Call to the Hall event, touching 91 MPH with some cross fire action after previously being seen in the mid 80's. Once he is able to repeat his actions and his repertoire is refined, look for him to climb the rankings nationally. An ultra-strong 2021 class has him pushed to 10th where most other years he would be a Top 5 candidate.
