Future Games Recap: Outfielders
September 6, 2019
Team New York's third year at the Prep Baseball Report Future Games as a full squad yielded some of the best talent so far, including a group of high end athletes roaming the outfield.
Outfielders
Matthew Canizares OF / RHP / Monsignor McClancy , NY / 2021Lean frame build at 5-foot-10 160 pounds. Ran a personal best 7.04 60. Offensively - Works from an even setup with a slight leg kick; quiet and repeatable actions that produced a consistent flat path through the zone. Gap to gap line drive results in his batting practices. Defensively- Showed above average arm strength at NYS games at 91 MPH from the OF and was 90 MPH at the Future Games. Projects well at all 3 spots; effortless with his tracking and arm shows that it might be able to hold a few miles per hour.
Gavyn Boyle OF / 1B / Royalton-Hartland, NY / 2022Highly projectable corner outfielder at 6-foot-2 180 pounds who swings it from the left side. Has run consistent 60's in the 6.89-7.10 range. Offensively Boyle sets up open with a controlled load of the hands back; stays behind the ball well showing natural lift to his pull side with present power; blasting several BP homeruns over the week. Defensively- he showed an improved arm in Georgia; fundamental approach that is aggressive but stays under control. Throws are accurate and on-line. Footspeed could keep him in the OF but size and power potential could open some doors at 1B if need be (current secondary position).
Itai Spinoza LHP / OF / Fayetteville Manlius , NY / 2021Compact frame that has explosive actions. 60 time hovers in the 7.4-7.5 range but in game movements and reads in the outfield are above average. Offensively- Feet start underneath his shoulders; uses a toe-tap and slight lift of the bat for timing. Line drive approach from foul line to foul line. Several hard hit balls during games; has the ability to be a table setter, high average/contact type but still drive the ball. Defensively- Plenty of arm at 88 MPH (was 90 at NYS Games); played all 3 positions well over the week covering all kinds of ground with proper/efficient routes. Also took to the mound where he uses an uptempo delivery and worked in the 81-84 MPH range.
Jovani Wiggs OF / OF / Shaker , NY / 2021A two-time Future Games attendee suffered a broken fibia and tibia last fall during a football game and is now back around to playing regularly again. The results, a 6.80 60, 85 MPH arm from the OF and 95 exit velo. Physically impressive with raw skills at 6-foot-0 185 pounds. At the plate Wiggs had several tough, grind it out at bats during the games, twice reaching on INF singles in the 4.2 range out of the box. Even setup at the dish with a short stride; accelerates through the zone and showed juice to both gaps during batting practice each day. Defensively the arm continues to improve; footwork into and through the ball could be more aggressive. Continued game experience will only help as the physical tools are there.
Nicholas Vega OF / RHP / Fordham Prep, NY / 2021Impressive build with a strong lower half for the 6-foot-3 188 pound corner outfielder. Vega ran a personal best 7.22 60 and has been 85-87 from the OF in his two workouts this summer. Offensively- The RHH showed above average pop during his BP with loud contact, specifically to his pull side (nearly cleared the building in LF during his BP on the final day). Bat stays in the zone with balance through contact. Defensively he uses a pro-step shuffle into his release. Throws held carry and there is probably a few more miles per hour with a more aggressive approach and crow hop.
Jay Pichardo OF / North Rockland , NY / 2021Pichardo stands a physically impressive 5-foot-10 170 pounds. Has consistently run in the 6.65-6.90 range with his 60's over four events the last year. At the plate the setup is spread with a knee lift for timing. Swing path is direct with line drive results. Breaking ball recognition will be the next hurdle but he had long, extended at bats fighting off tough pitches. Defensively- Can handle all three positions and has shown an above average arm at times (up to 88 MPH). Very fundamental with his approach and working through the ball; controlled aggression.
