Top Prospect Games: Pitcher Only's/Catchers

The Alabama Top Prospect Games were held on Wednesday, June 23rd at Choccolocco Park in Oxford. Players were put through a positional workout in the morning and then each player played in one of the three games that followed in the afternoon. Today, we begin to take a look at each player in attendance as we begin our individual scout analysis from Wedneday's event. Several other position players also pitched an inning in gameplay and their pitching notes will be included in their positional analysis.
Throughout the week we will continue our positional breakdown of all of the players in attendance, but today let's take a look at the pitcher only's and catchers from the event.
PITCHER ONLY'S/CATCHERS
Jack Allison, RHP, (2022) Mountain Brook
6-foot-1, 187-pound proportional lanky frame. Fluid action on the mound, showing consistent arm speed he had a long arm action and an over-the-top arm angle. Shows easy effort in his delivery and a tall balance point. Showed a fastball at 75-77 mph and command well around the zone. Features a 11/5 curveball (66-68) with solid glove side command. Had deceiving action and command low in the zone on his changeup (68-69). Pitched exclusively from the set and coupled the changeup well with the fastball. The fastball showed late cut to it.
Ray Anderson, LHP/1B, (2023) Lindsay Lane Christian
6-foot-2, 175-pound lean proportional frame. Solid feel on the mound, used a high ¾ arm angle and showed very quick arm action and consistenty with the arm path. Slow-tempo type pitcher who uses little effort in the delivery with an athletic balance point. The curveball (67-70 mph) is a solid pitch and also sat with the fastball at 79-80 mph showing arm side command. Shows deceiving action and very consistent command on his changeup (70-72). The fastball showed late arm side action and he was able to throw all 3 pitches in any count. All pitches come out of the same slot and he shows solid feel for the changeup. There is plenty of room for velocity in the future but Anderson commands all 3 pitches well.
Anthony Bermea, C/OF, (2022) Bob Jones
6-foot-2, 185-pound solid proportional frame. Solid round of batting practice, Bermea clocked an exit velocity of 95 mph as he begins in an athletic balanced stance with a controlled load while using a short stride. Bat speed is efficient asd he utilizes a simple uphill swing plane getting good extension on his finish. He barreled up multiple balls throughout the round and showed a solid gap to gap approach. While catching, his best throw reached a max velocity of 78 mph with a clean exchange, and athletic footwork. He showed solid catch and throw skills to control the run game with a pop time of 1.93-1.96. Above average flexibility and athletic setup. Consistent accuracy to the bases using a very quick arm action and a high ¾ slot. Clocked a time of 7.7 in the 60-yard dash.
Trevor Broome, C/3B, (2022) Grissom
5-foot-10, 180-pound mature sturdy frame. Clocked a 60 time of 7.79 at the event. Confident approach in the box, he recorded an exit velocity of 84 mph. Broome begins in a balanced stance with a compact load and utilizes a small leg kick. Bat speed is fairly quick as he uses an upward loose swing plane and high finish. Found some barrels in his rounds showing an up the middle approach. While in the infield, registered his best throw across the diamond at 78 mph with sure hands, choppy footwork, and a clean exchange. Behind the plate, he made throws to 2B up to 71 mph and showed a clean exchange and smooth footwork. Showed pop times of 2.11-2.18 from an athletic setup. Nice accuracy to the bases, used a short arm action and a high ¾ slot.
Jackson Crow, RHP/OF, (2023) Oxford
6-foot, 190-pound mature physical frame. Above average mechanics on the mound as he shows a high ¾ arm angle with a quick arm action. Drop-and-drive type pitcher who uses some effort in the deivery. Has an athletic balance point and downhill shoulders while showing a clean finish Featureed a fastball at 84-85 mph which showed late action and control around the zone. Threw his 12/6 curveball (73-74) with late action commanding it down in the zone. Shows a sharp slider with tight action. Strong lower half used well in the delievery. High spin rates on the fastball and both the curveball and slider.
Jase Gray, RHP/3B, (2022) Gadsden City
5-foot-11, 180-pound athletic solid frame. Solid actions on the mound with long arm action and he shows above average arm speed from a ¾ arm angle. Slow-tempo type pitcher that shows easy effort during the delivery. Showed a consistent balance point and an athletic finish. Sat with his fastball at 83-85 mph and topped out at 86 mph; showed very consistent control and late action. His 12/6 curveball (68-69) has consistent control and tight action. Showed control low in the zone and fading action on his changeup (69-70). Very clean delivery and the changeup tunnels well with the fastball.
Pierce Hanna, C/OF, (2022) Vestavia Hills
5-foot-10, 190-pound solid physical frame. In the 60-yard dash, his time was 7.72. Solid approach during batting practice as his best exit velocity was 94 mph. Began in an open tall stance with a small load, then used a leg kick to generate some juice. Bat speed is explosive while using a loose uphill swing plane and high finish. Was able to create a lot of loud contact and found multiple barrels with a pull side approach during BP. Behind the plate, he made throws to 2B up to 73 mph while showing a clean exchange and smooth footwork. Consistent pop time of 1.98-2.09 from a arrow setup with above average flexibility. Consistent accuracy to the bag, used a high ¾ slot with a quick arm action.
Cameron Hearn, C/3B, (2023) Covenant
5-foot-10, 178-pound athletic projectable frame. Starts in a quiet balanced stance with a tight load, then uses a short stride to be on time with the barrel. Bat speed is improving showing a simple level swing plane and good extension on his finish. Found some barrels during his BP round showing a solid approach in the box, Hearn had an exit velocity of 93 mph. Behind the plate, he recorded throws up to 72 mph with smooth footwork and a clean exchange. Recorded pop times of 2.23-2.27. Staggered setup with some flexibility. Showed a high ¾ slot with a compact arm action. During the event, ran the 60-yard dash in 7.57.
Kaden Heatherly, RHP/1B, (2023) Chelsea
6-foot-5, 210-pound long physical frame. On the mound he showed a long arm action and a high ¾ arm angle with consistent arm speed on all pitches. Does a nice job landing square on the front side. Heatherly is a physical presence on the mound but does a nice job getting downhill and creating nice tilt on the fastball at 82-83 mph. The pitch consistently stayed down in the zone and showed late life. The breaking ball showed slider type action with tight spin is a definite solid pitch in his arsenal at 67-69 mph.
Brodie Holcomb, OF/C (2022) Thompson
5-foot-11, 174-pound athletic proportional frame. Begins in an open stance with a compact load. Bat speed is above average as he shows a simple upward swing plane and good extension on his finish. Barreled up multiple balls during the round with a definite ap to gap approach. Holcomb had an exit velocity of 92 mph.Solid skills in the outfield as he showed arm strength up to 83 mph with rhythmic footwork and a natural exchange. When fielding he gathers the ball to the side.Behind the plate, his best position velocity throwing to 2B was 74 mph from a clean exchange and athletic footwork. He showed pop times of 2.03-2.15 from an athletic setup. Consistent accuracy to the bases, used a short arm action and an-over-the-top slot. Performed well in the 60-yard dash, clocking a speedy time of 6.78.
Branson Honea, RHP/3B, (2023) Boaz
5-foot-11, 175-pound proportional athletic frame. Solid makeup on the mound with consistent arm speed, while also using a very quick arm action and a high ¾ arm angle. Slow-tempo type pitcher who uses easy effort. in the delivery and an athletic balance point. Lands soft with a clean finish. on the front side, showing a fastball that at 83-85 mph with nice arm side command and late action. Threw his 11/5 curveball (70-73) with command low in the zone and tight action. Showed arm side control and fading action on his changeup (75-76).
Carter Kimbrell, C/RHP, (2023) Oak Mountain
6-foot, 190-pound physical proportional frame. Recorded a 60 time of 7.44 at the event. Bulldog tyoe mentality on the mound, showing above average arm speed from a ¾ arm angle and a quick arm action. Up-tempo type pitcher that uses the lower half well in the delivery. Displayed a clean finish while sitting 84-85 mph with late cutting action and control low in the zone. Throws a 12/6 curveball (71-72) with command low in the zone and swing and miss action. The breaking ball tunnels well with the fastball that he located well down in the zone.
Jarod Latta, RHP/C, (2023) Leeds
6-foot, 180-pound athletic sturdy frame. Very projectable on the mound using a high ¾ arm angle and a consistent arm action while showing above mechanics. Drop-and-drive type pitcher that uses his strong lower half in the delivery with a consistent balance point. Shows a fastball 79-81 mph, topping 82 mph. The pitch shows tilt and command low in the zone while also featurig a 12/6 curveball (70-71) with swing and miss action and very consistent command. Uses the strong lower half well and commanded the breaking ball very well also.
JT McArdle, RHP/OF, (2022) Opelika
6-foot-4, 220-pound athletic physical frame. Physical presence on the mound with quick arm speed and and a short arm action. Slow-tempo type pitcher that utilizes his strong lower half. Has in line shoulder and athletic balance poin with a clean finish. Showed a fastball 83-85 mph, topping at 86 mph with command around the zone. He showed a sharp slider at 75-76 mph also. The fastball showed some cut at times and seemed to take off (late life) closer to the plate. The breaking ball showed slider type action with tight spin and can be a swing and miss pitch. The changeup (75-76 mph) showed some deception and tumbled well into RH hitters.
Cannon Miller, C/3B, (2023) Chilton County
5-foot-11, 190-pound proportional sturdy frame. Offensively, starts in an athletic balanced stance with a compact load and a controlled stride. Bat speed is efficient while showing a rotational swing plane and high finish. Found multiple barrels duringhis BP round with a mostly pull-side approach. Miller clocked an exit velocity of 92 mph at the event via Trackmam. During the defensive workout, he made throws to 2B up to 76 mph showing a quick exchange and rhythmic footwork. Very impressive and consistent pop times of 1.92-1.99 from a quiet setup and a lot of flexibility. Consistent accuracy to the bases, he used a short arm action and a high ¾ slot. During the event, recorded a 60 time of 7.75.
Logan Mooney, LHP/OF, (2023) Athens
6-foot, 155-pound long athletic frame. Highly projectable on the mound, Mooney shows a high ¾ arm angle and a loose arm action and quick arm speed. The southpas shows nice feel on the mound twith low effort in the delivery. Showed a consistent balance point and lands square with lead foot. The fastball sat 79-80 mph and topped out at 82 mph with typical LHP arm side action. Features a 12/6 curveball (62-63) and showed command around the zone with late action on the pitch.
Jackson Reece, LHP, (2019) James Clemens
6-foot-3, 190-pound lean slim frame. 2019 grad looking to find a home for the upcoming season. The southpaw shows some pitchability on the mound while showing a consistent, repeatable release point on both pitches. The fastball (78-79 T80 mph) took off to the arm side showing swing and miss potential vs. RH hitters. The breaking ball (63-64 mph) was of the slower variety and showed late depth and can be an out pitch vs. LH hitters. Creates a fair amount of movement on all of his offerings.
Isaiah Sims, C/3B, (2022) Pinison Valley
6-foot, 205-pound mature physical frame. Offensively, begins in an open crouched stance with a compact load while using a small leg kick to generate some pop. Has above average bat speed, and a rotational swing plane with a high finish. Barreled up multiple balls throughout his BP round with a mostly pull side approach. The right-handed hitter showed an exit velocity of 93 mph as well. Behind the plate, he showed 72 mph on throws to the 2B bag with a clean exchange and rhythmic footwork, producing pop times of 2.12-2.21. Staggered setup with some flexibility. Used a consistent arm action and a high ¾ slot. In the 60-yard dash, recorded a time of 7.45.
Miles Thomas, C/RHP, (2022) Hillcrest
6-foot-1, 190-pound long proportional frame. Ran a 7.09 60 yard dash. Offensively, Thomas starts in a balanced stance with a small load with a small leg kick. Showed above average bat speed and a simple uphill swing plane and high finish. Found several barrels in his BP round showing a gap to gap approach. The right-handed hitter showed an exit velocity of 99 mph, 3rd Best EV of the day. In the outfield, his best throws to the plate topped out at 83 mph with rhythmic footwork and a natural exchange. Behind the plate, he was up to 77 mph with solid footwork as well. Displayed solid catch and throw skills by showins 1.99-2.15 pop times. Used a quick arm action and a high ¾ slot while showing consistent accuracy to the 2B bag. On the mound, showed a ¾ arm angle and quick arm speed. Consistent, athletic balance point in the delivery with a clean finish. Has very consistent command and sweeping action on his sharp slider at 72-73 mph. The fastball (84-85 mph, T86 mph)seemed to get on hitters quicker than expected as he did a nice job mixing his secondaty stuff. The splitter showed late tumble and had changeup type action.
Hudson Walburn, C/3B, (2023) Vestavia Hills
5-foot-11, 170-pound athletic solid frame. Recorded a 7.22 60 yard dash and offensively begins in a tall athletic stance with a smooth load and a small leg kick. Shows explosive bat speed with a simple upward swing plane and high finish. During BP, he stayed on balls to the middle of the field with a lot of loud contact and an overall gap to gap approach. The right-handed hitter had a max exit velocity of 93 mph according to Trackman. While catching, he was up to 77 mph on throws to the 2B bag with a quick exchange and athletic footwork. Pop times were very consistent at 2.03-2.11 from a quiet setup and tons of flexibility. Showed consistent accuracy to the base with a high ¾ slot and a very quick arm action.
Tyler Wilson, RHP/SS, (2023), Hoover
6-foot-2, 165-pound long lean frame. Wilson shows advanced mechanics and makeup on the mound from a high ¾ arm slot and very quick arm speed. Easy delivery and easy effort make him even more projectable. Repeated mechanics every pitch and displayed a clean finish. The fastball (86-87 mph, T88 mph) showed late life with natural sink and he commanded the pitch very well to all quadrants of the zone. The breaking ball (73-77 mph) has late movement while the changeup (75-78 mph) tunneled well off of the fastball. The offspeed offering also showed late fade. Wilson has a solid 3 pitch aresenal and projects extremely well with long arms and long legs.
