LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - The first West Coast Games started off hot, literally and figuratively, at UNLV's Earl E. Wilson Stadium. PBR Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, Pacific-Northwest and two California teams took the field for a classic Prep Baseball Report showcase. Prep Baseball Report Front Office Executives, State Scouting Directors, Area Scouts, Event Staff, Baseball Tech Specialists, Social Media Managers, College Coaches and College Players came together to form a deep and experienced event staff.
Day one finished with a 730pm tilt between Team California Gold and PBR Nevada, with California Gold winning 4-3. Truly a team win, California Gold was able to hold off Nevada thanks to; clutch hitting from Nate Norman and Jarrett Segura, web gem catch from Demarae Woods, dirtbag catching from Ryan Lee, steady pitching from Vincent Grant IV, elite baseball speed from Logan Gibson, Zander Ditona 2.12 caught stealing with runner on 3rd with two outs, and Cooper Lanz with the save.

NATE NORMAN
Team @PBR_California Red gets 3 in the 2nd to take a 3-1 lead. Biggest hit of the inning was this 2B to left field wall by ‘23 C/OF Nate Norman @thewallnorman. Smooth on-plane stroke here. Catches the ball out in front with good extension through at finish. @LesLukach @Jacked_23 pic.twitter.com/ggucvLvcio

Nate Norman was a standout performer at our preseason San Diego Open back in March where he flashed some pullside pop with some HRs during his BP round. In today’s morning workout however he showed a more relaxed and easy stroke where he worked the middle of the field with line drives. Then during game action, he got out in front of a FB and barreled it to the left-field wall for a RBI double. There’s strength throughout the body but it’s most prevalent in the lower half and hands. Norman is still developing his skills behind the dish but has shown enough at the plate to make him a guy to keep an eye on going into his junior year.
COOPER LANZ
Cooper Lanz’s FB/SL proved to be a nice strikeout combo in his two innings of work, striking out 4. Lanz’s arm action is loose and whippy with some present arm speed that works out of the lower 3/4 slot.Lanz painted the outside corner consistently with a 84-86 T87 fastball that had some major arm side run (19 inch max HB). The sweeping slider from the same slot induced weak swings and chases despite lack of depth. However, at times he showed ability to break the slider off with lower tilt, creating more depth. It’s an uncomfortable at-bat for RHHs with his crossfire action. This is our third look at him in the last month and what has stood out the most is the fast tempo he works with and the continued pitchability he has shown where he understands how he wants to use his stuff and execute it.
Jarrett segura
‘23 1B/3B Jarrett Segura @cavscoachjc showed the ability to keep his hands inside the baseball nicely during BP to pound the right center gap. Had a similar swing below ? to extend the @PBR_California Red lead to 4-1. This an LD RBI single up the middle. @LesLukach @Jacked_23 pic.twitter.com/LeNw8Ryjlz

We have had a couple of looks at Jarrett throughout the last couple months and the hit tool seems to get better each time out. The swing is compact with a path that can be steep at times but the hands stay tight, inside the ball and seems to find the barrel more often than not. In the opening night game, he had an RBI line-drive single to center and lined out to the SS. It’s also worth mentioning that he is solid in all facets at first base, whether that’s footwork around the bag, quick athletic actions on GBs/DPs, a quick accurate arm, or just solid glovework. Segura has a highly projectable and athletic build as well that should yield more power in the future which makes him an interesting follow heading into his junior year at Alemany.
VINCENT GRANT IV
Grant entered the game one inning earlier than expected and was able to steady the ship and work through 3 innings of work; 3 INN - 3 H - 1 R- 2 BB - 5K. The 6-foot-4 195 pound right-hander showed pitchability, fastball/slider feel and upside on the mound. Worked to repeat his mechanics helping control the strike zone and induce contact. Fastball 83-84 mph to both sides of the plate and was at its best located down in the zone. Slider at 64-67 mph showed some swing and miss ability along with tendency to get hitters out in front. The upside is there in his current build with long arms and legs with plenty of room for growth. Velocity both on his fastball and slider will continue to rise showing off Grant's true potential on the mound and putting him on the Division 1 radar.
