ORANGE, CALIF. - The annual Unsigned Senior Games returned to Hart Park in Orange providing upwards of 50 seniors an opportunity to update metrics and showcase their abilities in a workout and gameplay format event. The event annually draws some of the top uncommitted players and the 2021 rendition was no different.
With COVID still impacting many college rosters, perhaps no class has been affected like the 2022 class. Needless to say there are many, many talented players in the class that remain uncommitted and several of them came to the Unsigned Senior Games to show and prove they are worthy of an opportunity at the next level.
As customary to most PBR California events, scouting reports complete the post-event content rollout. TrackMan and Blast Motion provide necessary data needed to analyze and understand player capabilities but the written eye test remains undefeated and an integral part in scouting. Today we take a look at catchers.

Scouting Reports
Matthew Leyva, Walnut (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 6-0, 210-pounds. Big body catcher with present strength, moves well behind the dish, athleticism starting to show.
Hit: RHH. Slightly open stance, even in the box, leg kick to footstrike, timing key to overall swing, consistent showing. Blast Motion scores of 56-53-50. Nice even score across the board works well for his even swing. No glaring weaknesses help the bat now and show ability to develop quickly but also highlight need for across the board improvement.
Power: 94.00 max exit velocity
Arm: RH. C - 78.00 mph. College-level arm, arm speed key to velocity, potential and room for development showing.
Defense: 2.04-2.11 pop times. Sits low for his size, lines up well with target, good transfers, projectable behind the plate.
Run: 7.86 runner in the 60.
Bennett Price, Oak Park (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: C/1B
Body: 6-0, 165-pounds. Mature build with present strength, did not use batting gloves when hitting, looks the part behind the plate.
Hit: RHH. Wide stance with athletic bend, slightly open front foot with a simple lift and plant to hitting position. Length in the swing with some present pull side power. Blast Motion scores of 39-58-46. Swing takes time to get to preferred hitting position, helping explain the lower plane score, while the average to slightly above-average connection and rotation scores highlight his ability to make good contact with some pop.
Power: 83.00 max exit velocity
Arm: RH. C - 69.00 mph. Arm mechanics show ability but lack velocity, consistent release and throws play up the arm, velocity jump needed for next level.
Defense: 2.11-2.30 pop times. Quick-release keeps arm swing short and close to body, likes to throw from knees, did not cheat with body positioning with throwdowns. Wide catching stance, could sit lower for better target, adequate blocking skills.
Run: 8.17 runner in the 60.
Kyle Sugimoto, Bishop Montgomery (CA), 2022
Positional Profile: C/OF
Body: 5-11, 155-pounds. Slimmer athletic build with room to add some strength and mass.
Hit: RHH. Unique stance and load. Is slightly open in stance with his hands loose and low over home plate. Starts leaning into his backside early while hands wind back. Uses a slow toe tap trigger as he enters his forward move. Slow and early movements allow for good adjustability in his swing. Consistently on-time and balanced with lower half and hands. Hands/barrel work on a clean path getting on plane early then working up through impact. Was gap to gap throughout his BP round. Two doubles during game action, one to the LC gap and one down the RF line.
Power: 89.00 max exit velocity. Rotational acceleration average of 22.3 gs shows good body movement sequencing during swing to maximize power and show a good power ceiling. Current double gap to gap power with potential for more with bat speed gains.
Arm: RH. C - 72.00 mph. Showed an accurate arm during throwdowns putting 4/5 on the bag. Arm action is short. Pull Back into scap and gets to release point out in front with easy effort.
Defense: 2.05-2.11 pop times. Solid quick footwork on throwdowns. Gets the body into good alignment with 2nd base. Good pitch framing ability. Soft glove that starts low and works up. Mixes up positioning and always stays low into his legs to try and steal low strikes.
Run: 7.32 runner in the 60.
