Scout Blog: NY Metro Area HS Scout Day

Jared Carrier
Scouting Director

We headed out to City Park in New Rochelle last night (home field for D1 Iona College and NJCAA D1 Monroe College) to see players outdoors for the final time in 2017. In what has been a whirlwind of coverage this fall, the NYC based players (along with a few outside the five boroughs) that made up the majority of the attendees last night did not disappoint.

Prep Baseball Report - NY is your No. 1 source for all amateur baseball coverage in NY, including 24/7 promotional material via several multi-media platforms. Taking things one step further, and something that is often forgotten, we are an unbiased Scouting company. Below is a look at the day's scouting blog on some of the player's that stood-out.

Familiar Faces

Alfredo Delgado 3B / RHP / Fordham Prep, NY / 2019

The 6-2 225 3B/RHP pounded the ball to his pull side and sat 84 MPH with some heaviness to his FB. Mixed in a late breaking CB at 69 MPH.

Angel De La Cruz 1B / 3B / Grand Street Campus, NY / 2018

One of the more feared sluggers in NYC, De La Cruz had some of the loudest contact during BP. Very nimble for his 5-foot-11 220 pound frame around the bag at 1B.

Jemal Betances C / SS / St. Raymonds, NY / 2018

Solid backstop at 5-foot-7 180 pounds with an improved release; pop times ranged from 1.91-2.02. Also flashed some serviceable skills on the infield with a suitable left side arm and active footwork.

Christopher Moreno OF / RHP / Benjamin Cardozo, NY / 2018

Strong arm with all the fundamentals in place from the outfield. Balanced, line drive approach at the plate.

Daniel Cordero 3B / C / Benjamin Cardozo, NY / 2018

Strong arm from the left side of the infield with accuracy. Stayed through the middle during BP with pull side some gap pop.

Samuel De La Cruz SS / 2B / James Monroe, NY / 2018

Fast twitch actions with a strong arm that can occasionally get away from him. Clean, line drive approach in the box.

Anthony Tirado RHP / All Hallows, NY / 2019

Long and lean at 6-foot-4 177 pounds. Works downhill at 84-85 MPH. Showed some offensive potential with line drives to the gaps and serviceable left side glove (3B).

Additional Highlights

2018 1B/OF William Cheatham, La Guardia HS, NY
Long and lean frame at 6-foot-2 180 pounds. Serviceable around the bag at 1B and in the OF. Showed some pop/lift his swing. Some rawness present.

2018 SS/OF Jaylen Palmer, Holy Cross HS, NY
The most impressive physical frame at the event at 6-foot-2 190 pounds. Showed a strong arm from both the OF and SS along with a fundamental approach to the ball in both spots. Short, line drive stroke during BP. Seems to be an extra gear in there that hasn't been unlocked yet.

2018 3B/RHP Adrien Espinal, Lincoln HS, NY
Long legged 6-foot-2 225 pound frame. 3B projection with carry to throws; pounded the gaps during BP with a long finish through the zone. On the mound he sat 81-82 MPH working downhill with his FB; 10-to-4 action with a slider look to his breaking ball. Feel for change up at 74-75 and showed a knuckleball that rolled off the table at 69 MPH.

2019 OF Miguel Toribio, James Monroe HS, NY
Another look at the left-handed hitting outfielder produced more of the same results; line drive after line drive. Balanced approach with some backspin to the right-center gaps. Accurate arm that would play more in CF or LF.

2018 INF/OF Wilson Nunez, James Monroe HS, NY
Dynamic middle infielder/outfielder. Handles the part in the outfield but showed a quick exchange on the infield with above average footwork and a strong arm. Line drives to all fields during BP.

2020 2B/SS Bryant Bassett, James Monroe HS, NY
A player to watch for the future for sure. Athletic 5-foot-8 155 pounds with above average arm for his age; showed plus range with a repeatable line drive approach at the plate.

2020 OF/LHP Kelvin Marte, Middletown HS, NY
Smooth, easy stroke with some punch to the left-handed hitter's pull side. Ball jumped off the bat. Clean approach from the outfield with an accurate arm with carry. Carved up the strike zone during his pen sitting 77-80 MPH with a sharp tilting slider at 73-74 MPH. Flashed a change at 73 MPH.

2020 C Kevin Marte, Middletown HS, NY
Brothers with Kelvin, the 5-foot-8 180 pound catcher unleashed several throwdowns in the 2.06-2.10 range with one runout at 1.93. Needs a bit more separation with his hands from the body during his swing but is strong and can get the barrel through.

2018 RHP Gelse Mercedes, North Rockland HS, NY
Lean/athletic RHP who sat 79-80 MPH with a split like change up that dropped off the table at 71-74 MPH. More velo in the tank as the arm worked easy on a cool night.

2018 Justin Terrero, James Monroe HS, NY
Compact 5-foot-8 170 pounds with a strong lower half; Sat 81-82 MPH with some down action to his change at 72-74 MPH. Worked in SL and CB with similar early action.

2020 RHP Edward Urena, James Monroe HS, NY
Easy arm with some hand speed coming from a lean 6-foot-3 175 pound frame with room for gains. Pounded the knees at 83-85 MPH with an 11-to-5 CB at 72 MPH. Showed a change that featured some arm side fade at 76 MPH.

2018 LHP Justin Kaplan, HS Scholars, NY
6-foot-2 195 pound LHP who exhibited above average command at 76-77 MPH from a 3/4 slot. CB was 64 MPH featuring 2-to-8 shape and depth. Slider was same velocity as CB but more lateral.

2018 RHP Alex Reyes, Grand St. Campus, NY
Athletic, muscular build at 5-foot-8 170 pounds with a quick arm at 80-81 MPH, sharp-late action slider at 69-71 MPH; swing and miss pitch.

Welcome Back

2018 SS Chris Mondesi, Grand St. Campus, NY
High-end athlete with easy actions; quick arm from shortstop. Booming gap power during batting practice. Was in Florida but now back in Brooklyn. PBR-NY first saw him in the PSAL playoffs as a sophomore that was already standing out among his peers.

Out of State Representation

2018 OF/LHP Christian Cabrera, Teaneck HS, NJ
Cabrera was recently at the Downstate Unsigned Senior event at Dutchess Stadium where he put up some eye popping numbers. Although not as sharp today he did still produce some booming results in BP to straight away CF. Arm strength showed from the OF and was 81-84 MPH on the bump with room for polish.

2018 C, Joshua Lopez, Danbury HS, CT
Lean 5-foot-11 170 pound right-handed hitting catcher with some lift to his swing. Accurate on-the-bag throws with a range of 2.00-2.07 with one touched off at 1.93.

The Commits

2018 RHP Erubiel Candelario, Kipp NYC, NY (Marist Commit)
Not as sharp as we've seen him in the past but still can see the projection sitting 84-85 with a few late breaking slurves at 71-74 MPH. Silkly actions on the infield with some length present in the swing.

2018 2B/SS Randy Flores, Grand St. Campus, NY (Franklin Pierce Commit)
Fast twitch middle infielder with a through the middle line drive approach; projects more at 2B for the next level. Once he stays under control defensively he'll reach his full potential.

2019 C Gus Sosa, Moore Catholic, NY (Rutgers Commit)
Well above average release with the majority of his pop times in the 1.91-1.95 range. Athletic frame and actions as evidenced when working out in the infield. Short, compact stroke in the box. Contact/line drive approach.

2018 C Edward Jarvis, Regis HS, NY (Northeastern Commit)
Quick feet, throws had carry with pop times ranging 2.00-2.03. Consistent backstop, high level defender.

2018 INF Thomas Papodopolous (St. John's Commit)
Impressive from SS with a strong arm with carry and accuracy. Ranges well laterally with a clean exchange. Sweeps through the zone with some above average bat speed, deceptive power from the the 5-foot-11 182 right-handed hitter.
