WILDOMAR, CA. - The Road to the California State Games began at the inaugural Riverside County Preseason All-State held at Elsinore High School. Players descended on the field to show their fall/winter progress in the leadup to the spring season just a few weeks away. The invitation only event drew over 200 requests which was narrowed down to the 80 participants selected.

Players were put through a customary pro-style workout that included a laser-time 60-yard sprint, a round of batting practice, a defensive workout that includes double-play turns for infielders, and concluded with bullpen sessions for pitchers. We purposely did not include games because we didn’t want to put pitchers who aren’t ready to face live hitters in that situation.

As we dive deeper into our notes and videos we will release more post-event content. Earlier we released our Quick Hits highlighting 20 early standouts, the Statistical Analysis and now we'll take a look at the outfielders from the event.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Anderson in this type of setting. Medium, lean, proportional, projectable, athletic frame. Anderson has tools and displayed above average bat speed, a compact swing, and controls body in the box. Consistently hit the ball hard in his BP round. Moves well in the outfield but profiles better on the corners. Showed an above average arm tool with carry through the cutoff man. As he matures and grows physically, all of his tools will improve.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Boynton in this type of setting. Large, proportional, athletic frame. Started the day running an average 60-yard dash. Moved onto his BP round where he shows an open, balanced stance. Is lacking hand speed at the moment having issues getting the barrel on the ball consistently. Boynton will have to develop more arm strength in the future to make an impact. Adding strength and flexibility to his frame will allow him to improve his overall game.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our second look at Calzada in this type of setting. The frame has significant room to grow.  Has made an adjustment with the bat and was more consistent squaring the ball up in his BP round.  Adding overall strength will allow him to drive balls more consistently. Calzada will have to develop more arm strength moving forward as his throws from the outfield faded and were offline.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Baldwin in this type of setting. Small, muscular, compact, athletic frame. Ran a quick 60-yard dash, exhibiting he has lead-off type speed. BP round was crisp, squaring the ball up consistently.  Setup in the box is slightly closed, uses a high leg kick trigger with a hitch in hands. Because he’s so athletic, Baldwin is able to get his hand back in a good hitting position and approach to contact is violent through the hitting zone. Showed his versatility participating in multiple aspects of the workout. Defensively, Baldwin athleticism plays anywhere on the field. Took proper routes, and uses proper footwork in the outfield and infield. Transfers are smooth, quick and displays an above average arm that was accurate often one hopping the glove. Baldwin can add value on the mound as well, and he is a big part of St. Bernard’s success as a whole.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Valdez in this setting. Small, slight frame that has significant room to add weight. Setup in the box is narrow and open. Shows a high leg kick with a soft foot strike. Bat path and approach to contact is simple with a slight uppercut. Had a decent BP round with an all fields approach. Adding strength will allow Valdez to get to the inside pitch and drive balls to the pull side. Profiles defensively at an outfield corner. Footwork is proper, but did not have the arm strength to make consistent throws. Bringing strength to his overall game will improve his tools.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. This is our first look at Cohen in this setting. Lean, medium, lanky frame with long arm, legs and plenty of room to add muscle. Setup in box is traditional and balanced. Shows a moderate leg kick with proper soft foot strike. Hand load ends up in proper position before firing, and work in sync with his lower half. Approach to contact is whippy and extends properly through hitting zone. In BP he showed the ability to square the ball up. Defensively, Cohen needs to work on getting to the ball faster on routes, and having quicker transfers from glove to hand. Arm is below average currently. Adding strength and twitchyness will improve his overall game.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State (outfield). This is our third look at Espinoza in this setting. Progress is occurring as a position player, and body is developing nicely. Stood out in his BP round peppering the L-screen, and hitting lasers all around the field. Body, hands, and feet were in sync. Power tool is developing. Profiles at a corner outfield position. Displayed some athleticism in his outfield session and the ability to get rid of the ball quickly on transfers, meanwhile making strong, accurate throws to all bases.

Scouting Report

Preseason All-State. (Catcher) Flashberg’s physical tools are developing nicely. He’s added overall strength to his frame along with 15 pounds of muscle. Participated in multiple aspects in this workout. Bat, hand speed has increased and he is starting to drive the baseball in the gaps.
(outfield) Showed good athleticism on routes to balls using proper footwork and technique. Showed an average, accurate arm with an over-the-top, pull-down throwing motion that had good carry. Profiles as a future catcher.

Scouting Report

(outfield) This is our third look at Hsu in this type of setting. Hsu’s physical attributes are developing nicely. Showed well in his BP round driving balls in the gaps. Swing was controlled, but violent, and power coming along. Has significant room for adding strength, and twitchyness to his overall game. Displayed an average arm in his defensive session, with the ball fading at times. Developing arm strength and using proper techniques will allow him to improve.
