PBR Spring Training: Day Two Quick Hits I

PBR Canada Staff

PBR Canada Spring Training got underway on Saturday with teams getting their first outdoor practices under their belts at Launch Pad Sports Complex in Cocoa, Florida.

Day Two shifted to some live-game action, along with more practices as we look ahead to Scout Day on Day Three.

We had full staff on hand from Canada and Florida with five active fields filled with 230+ Canadian prospects. We had 8 total games played on Sunday among eight different Canadian squads from the Ontario Giants, NRS Academy, Canes Canada, Whitby Canadians, Etobicoke Rangers, Ontario Prospects and PBR Canada Selects.

Below, we begin to break down eight of the top prospects and standout performers we saw on the first day of live-game action in Cocoa, Florida with our first set of Day Two Quick Hits.

Lewis Foster RHP / 1B / Monarch Park, ON / 2024

Uncommitted 2024 RHP Lewis Foster was one of the more highly anticipated arms we have here in Cocoa and the 6-foot-4, 200-pound right-hander impressed with swing/miss stuff. The NRS product sat 85-87mph (T87.7) and although it was erratic at times, he was difficult to touch when working in the zone. Worked with a curveball, changeup and splitter although he didn’t need to use much offspeed through his outing. Intriguing uncommitted 2024 arm who should be on college coaches radar.

Andrew Maltar RHP / C / Christ the King, ON / 2025

‘25 C/RHP Andrew Maltar was one of the more intriguing underclass arms in Cocoa today. Strong, sturdy frame on the mound at 5-foot-11, 200-pounds and it’s a long, clean arm action. Worked predominantly with the fastball that sat 78-80 T82 from a minimal effort delivery and also flashed a changeup and curveball. Young arm out of the Canes Canada program to keep tabs on.

Logan Donohue RHP / OF / St. Anne's Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2025

This was our second look at 2025 RHP Logan Donohue this year and first time in-game. Long, lanky frame right now at 6-foot-1, 155-pounds. It was a quality outing from the Canes Canada product as the fastball sat 81-83mph good spin at 2300+. Comfortable throwing the breaking ball in any count at 69-71 with average spin of 2536rpm. Another good showing this year from Donohue who will be an interesting follow over the next couple years as he gains strength.

Sam Walsh RHP / 1B / Leaside , ON / 2024

2024 RHP Sam Walsh was another interesting arm out of the NRS program. Has some length and projectability on the mound at 6-foot-3, 160-pounds and the fastball sat 80-81 T82.5 with the fastball. Came out of the bullpen firing strikes and sat down the first hitter he faced on three straight pitches. Predominantly fastballs from Walsh but also flashed a breaking ball at 71-73mph. Good first look today from the right-hander who plays with the Leaside Leafs during the summer.

Chazz Grossington SS / 2B / Silverthorn Collegiate, ON / 2023

Grossington was one of the main attractions in the box today at Spring Training. The bat has come along nicely since the fall, with a more fluid, and loose set up. He got the barrel out and had multiple hard hit balls to his pull-side. The Winthrop commit also looked his usual self up the middle with above average defence at SS, including turning multiple double plays with quick actions and soft hands. Grossington will be a close follow all week down in Florida.

Jackson Kornylo RHP / 1B / Donald A. Wilson, ON / 2025

Kornylo, 6-foot-5, 188-pounds came as advertised on the mound at PBR Spring Training. Long/projectable frame that looks right on the mound, gets down the mound with intent. He used the FB almost exclusively sitting 86-87 T88.2 with life out of the hand that got tons of in-zone swing-and-misses. He mixed in a downer SL and a CH. Kornylo has jumped on to the scene after his strong showings last fall as he continues to trend upwards in Florida.

Luke Druken RHP / 3B / Waterford Valley , NL / 2025

2025 RHP Luke Druken was one of the more high profile underclass arms in Cocoa and didn’t disappoint. The Canes Canada right-hander pounded the zone with the fastball at 79-81 T81.7 and got swings/misses on the pitch. Also does a good job working the outer edges and bottom of the strike zone. Spun the breaking ball at 68-70mph with more of a horizontal look. Good first showing of the year from the 2022 Jr. Future Gamer who continues to excel on the mound.

Kody Thistle LHP / OF / Holy Spirit , NL / 2024

Uncommitted 2024 LHP Kody Thistle was another good looking arm out of the Canes Canada program today with a projectable look on the mound from the left-side at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds. Sat 76-79 T80 with the fastball and creates good extension down the mound. Strictly curveball for his offspeed offerings at 63-66 with the ability to throw it for strikes. Interesting arm as he continues to add strength and develop on the mound.
