New Faces For Team Canada - On The Dirt

With the turnover from the 20 man World Championship Team Canada Roster that was assembled for South Korea at the end of the summer in 2019, only six players will be returning for Spring Training camp this March in St. Petersburg Florida.

Of those 6 players, the only position player is Elijha Hammill, our 2nd ranked prospect in Ontario’s 2021 class and currently uncommitted.

With that, there will be a new crop of fresh faces when Team C takes the field this spring and we take a look at those who will see time in the infield, with 6 new names we give you the low-down on what these upcoming prospects are all about

Brody Alexandre 3B / 1B / NA, BC / 2020 Rankings  StateRank: 5 / POS: 1 Report: Big left-handed hitter out of Saskatchewan who will play and train with the Langley Blaze out in BC this year. The bat and power are what stands out about Alexandre and the smooth swing from the left side is something to dream on for the uncommitted senior. There are some present holes as he struggles at the Canada Cup and at times at T12, but the swing plays with room to add size and strength to a frame that can carry the load. We’ve seen him launch balls to his pull side before and he has never really seen any elite fastball or secondary stuff, and is at dis-advantage just from a number of at-bats. Alexandre can be a sleeper in the pact and schools need to be on this middle of the order type bat with power from the left-side.

Nathaniel Ochoa SS / OF / Notre Dame Catholic Secondary School, ON / 2022 Rankings  StateRank: 1 / POS: 1 OverallRank: 140 / POS: 36 Report: Ochoa, a Future Games member this past year has really made strides and the long, lean frame at 6-foot-3 inttrigues you as soon as it walks off the bus. The glove is currently above the bat as he moves with ease and confidence at shortstop with actions and arm strength that plays. The foundation and path work for Ochoa, though at times he can get long at the dish, but the biggest tool he currently lacks is strength and can see him really taking off once he adds muscle and size. A 2021 eligible draft, Ochoa is currently taking a victory lap and seeking college commitment as a 2022 grad.

Emilien Pitre SS / Academie Baseball Canada, QC / 2020 Report: Pitre, a standout at the Future Games for PBR Canada this year and was a Kentucky commit two days after the event as the slick fielding, left-handed hitting shortstop displayed a short, level stroke that would use the entire field during his time in Georgia. The hands, feet work very well in the infield as there is range, quick transfer and feel to play multiple positions on the dirt. The body lacks size but the tools and foundation have Pitre looking to make an impact wearing Canada red across his chest.

Mason Dobie SS / 2B / Georgian Bay Community, ON / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 7 / POS: 3 Report: Dobie is a sound, fundamentally strong player with offensive polish, similar to another left-handed hitter on last year's roster in Noah Hull. Dobie can play all over the infield but can envision him seeing time at the corners as the glove is clean with easy, confident actions while the bat can do a lot of damage, especially after a winter in the gym. He’s balanced, barrell stays in the zone and can jump baseballs with juice to his pull-side when he gets a mistake. Always seems to be even keel and in control, committed to Dayton not long after his Future Games appearance in Georgia with PBR Canada.

Brando Leroux SS / 2B / St Augustine, ON / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 9 / POS: 4 Report: Leroux is someone who you can just sit back and watch take ground ball after ground ball as the 2021 uncommitted grad has some of the best hands in the country, and work well and in sync with his lower half while showing a maturity for the shortstop position at a young age and internal clock in his head. At the plate, switch-hitter who is going to spend a lot, if not most of his time currently from the right side. Don’t let the small, undersized frame fool you with his offensive game. Fearless in the box, aggressive and will surprise you with his gap-power. A player who is worth the price of admission, there is style and moxy to his game, a big end to the fall put Leroux in this position.

Core Jackson SS / Lambton Central, ON / 2021 Rankings  StateRank: 3 / POS: 2 Report: Jackson caught our staff’s eyes early in the season and kept producing and being an impact player on both sides of the ball every time we saw him. Plays game with an edge and competes very well. There is offensive output with loose, quick hands from the left-side of the plate as he looks to attack early and often. Can see him getting opportunities at multiple spots defensively but currently seems to be no reason why he can’t stick at shortstop moving into the next level. Expect Jackson, the number three ranked prospect in the 21’ class from Ontario to be guns a blazing come March in Florida.
