Rankings Release: Updated Class of 2022 Rankings
December 9, 2020
Since March the world has been a different place, creating many obstacles on the amateur baseball scene across the country. Seasons were lost and a lot of baseball was crammed into a window between early July and late October here in New York.
For the PBR-NY staff we were able to see plenty of juniors after July 6th with the kickoff of the NYS Games. A plethora of Scout Days helped deepen the class this fall. Over a 130 new additions have made the list.
After many staff discussions, we are ready to release our updated Class of 2022 Rankings along with a massive "Players to Watch" list (select 2022 tab).
Let's kick off our updated rankings with a snapshot rundown of the Top 10; the entire 2022 ranking can be found HERE.
NOTE: An updated "date" on the rankings page does not indicate a full update or release. The moving of one player, one spot (or removal/addition), resets the time stamp to the present date. An official release on the website and on social media indicates a complete update.
Please also be aware that with the addition of over 130 players, previous players rankings may be adjusted greatly. This is solely due the addition of players, not a "drop" in the rankings.
Upcoming Ranking Releases:
Class of 2023 (before 12/18)
Class of 2022 / Top 10
Eliakim Stowe RHP / 1B / Millbrook Prep, NY / 2022The Maryland commit held on to his top spot over the summer with a strong showing at the "Call to the Hall" committed player event in July. The 6-foot-3 215 pound RHP works in the 88-90 MPH range and can clip an occasional 91/92 along with command of a CB/SL combo (both with peak spin rates above 2300 RPM). Also gets above average extension of nearly 7' feet with his change up that averages a foot of arm side movement.
|
Evan Chaffee LHP / OF / Hamburg , NY / 2022Chaffee continued his rise within the rankings following an impressive outing at the "Call to Hall" event in mid July. The 6-foot-2 170 pound Southpaw will continue to add positive mass to his frame and we expect his 86-89 MPH heater to continue to climb. Arm action is long and loose with minimal restrictions from a lower 3/4 slot. Breaking ball has slider feel and is a swing and miss option to his arsenal. Can flash a CH with upwards of 15"-17" of arm side movement. Alabama commit.
|
Wyatt Parliament RHP / 1B / LaFargeville , NY / 2022Parliament, much like Chaffee and Stowe, came out with guns blazing at the "Call to the Hall" event working at 90 MPH his entire first inning with spin that ranges from 2300-2600 RPM. Prototypical starter's frame at 6-foot-2 195 pounds with a delivery that repeats. The Rutgers commit also has a short action breaking ball in the low 70's and a CH that features 9"-11" of arm side action.
|
Carlos Gonzalez RHP / OF / Inwood Academy, NY / 2022Gonzalez, on our collective radar for some time, finally got in front of our eyes this fall at the Elite Squad Scout Day. The physical 6-foot-4 210 pound righty from NYC did not disappoint. FB was electric at 93-95 MPH with average spin just shy of 2400 RPM. Curveball showed promise with late 2-plane action in the upper 70's. Overall command and refinement of a power change (81-83 MPH) will not only catapult him further up the rankings on the national level but also on 2022 MLB draft boards across the country. Gonzalez is currently uncommitted.
|
Devan Kodali OF / OF / Poly Prep , NY / 2022The Vanderbilt commit has been in front our eyes on a state level at the Metro Scout Day and nationally at the Area Code Games at Lakepoint this past summer. Advanced physicality in the 6-foot-2 180 pound range; the RHH showed a controlled approach in the box at the 2020 Area Code games with ability to accelerate the barrel through the zone. Will continue to fill out his frame and have the ability to be a high average/power threat at the next level. |
Marcus Smith SS / OF / All Hallows , NY / 2022Smith, a reclassification from the 2021 Class, will be attending Citius Prep after his final year at All Hallows. The versatile athlete is comfortable on both sides of the bag and can slot in at CF/LF as well. Bat speed and the ability to barrel the ball were apparent at the 2020 Northeast Future Games. A 6.65-6.89 runner in the 60 coupled with a quick first step will make him a constant threat on the basepaths. Smith is a Cincinnati commit.
|
Maxx Yehl LHP / 1B / Portville, NY / 2022Yehl, a West Virginia commit, along with Chaffee will keep Western NY hitters in low spirits the next couple years. The 6-foot-4 185 pounder has a shown a steady uptick in the velo department, working up to 87 MPH at the NYS Games from the left side. The out pitch is a big, sweeping CB that averages 15.1" of break with above average spin in the 2560-2671 range. Look for his frame to continue to fill out and with additional velocity on the way.
|
Michael Lombardi SS / RHP / Fox Lane, NY / 2022A huge summer for Lombardi with his continued development on the mound and commitment to Tulane. The 6-foot-2 190 pound dual threat attended his 2nd Future Games this past summer and followed up his NYS Games efforts on the mound with an equally impressive outing in DuBois, PA. Lombardi works with an uptempo pace sitting 85-88 MPH and can pepper the zone with his FB while mixing a 12-6 CB. The left side defender has shown barrel control at the plate and will always provide a quality at-bat.
|
Michael Kennedy LHP / 1B / Troy , NY / 2022The LSU commit has always stayed in the Top 10 since the initial rankings. FB works in the mid 80's and can clip the upper 80's on occasion. Has always showed the feel for spin and can land his CB for strikes or miss down for swings and misses (Spin rate averages 2365 RPM). Repeats delivery, solid mound composure and can use his change up to setup his FB on the inner half to RHH.
|
Michael Mancini SS / RHP / Maine-Endwell, NY / 2022Mancini continued to show this summer why he is one of the toughest outs in any of the Empire State grad classes. Routinely finds the barrel against above average pitching and showed this at the Future Games for two years in a row. Can handle either side of the bag and could serve a super utility role being able to add 3B or the outfield to his repertoire. One of the bigger eye opening moments of the summer was his effort on the bump showing a 7-8 MPH velo spike up to 88 MPH along with a hammer 12-6 CB that averaged an impressive 2805 RPM.
