Preseason Capital Region: Top Performers

Tim Hunter
VP of Operations

The 202 Preseason All-State - Capital Region event took place inside All-Stars Academy on Wednesday February 19th. Here's a quick look at a few players that caught our attention with their performances, along with top statistical leaders from the event.

Nicholas Plue C / 3B / Guilderland, NY / 2022

The 2022 graduate had an impressive BP round here at All-Stars Academy. Mainly a pull side hitter, but loud contact with every swing. No surprise he had the top spot with Exit Velo at 96mph. Plue generates a lot of power from his lower half making sure its explosive in every swing and his hands whip the bat through the zone. Plue's defensive skills shined just as much as his offensive ones. Posting top numbers in Catcher Velo (75mph) and Pop (2.01-2.12) this player is a must follow as he continues to develop and get older.

Andrew Dongelewic RHP / 2B / Shaker , NY / 2022

This dual player was a top player in three different categories including two where he was the top spot. With gap-to-gap power he really puts a jolt into the baseball (95mph Exit Velo) using active hands to get through the zone. Smooth bat path to keep it in the zone long enough to catch the ball out front and drive it. Dongelewic took our top spot for OF Velo (85mph) using his long arm swing to generate plenty of backspin on his low line drive throws. On the mound, Dongelewic is able to throw all of his pitchers for strikes with good movement on his off-speeds. His FB (85 mph) rides through the zone, if he finishes a little more he will fill the zone up a little better, but is someone to keep an eye on moving forward.

Luke Szepek C / SS / CBA - Albany, NY / 2023

6 foot 2, 170-pounds is a good target to have behind the plate. This 2023 catcher put up some great numbers both offensively and defensively. Behind the dish he was able to throw consistent one hops to second base notching our Top C Velo for the event  with 78mph. Footwork will only get better as he develops which means his pop time, already at a 2.08-2.15, will decrease as he moves better. Szepek uses a decent sized leg kick for timing and takes his hands straight to the ball making for some loud contact. Keep and eye out for his has he improves his game and continues to put up top numbers.

Daniel Cohen RHP / SS / South Glens Falls , NY / 2022

One of the Top FB Velocities we had, 85mph, he uses all 6 foot 2 of his frame to reach out and really pound both sides of the plate. Cohen is able to spin his off-speed for strikes with a four pitch mix. Not just a pitcher, but also a SS, Cohen has smooth glove actions along with the footwork to go with it. Possible 3rd baseman in the future when he fills out with his gap-to-gap pop. Impressive fielding tools, solid pop, and ability to throw hard (while filling up the zone) makes him a strong dual player.
