Prep Baseball Report kicked off its coverage of North Carolina with the State Games of North Carolina and there has been a flurry of activity across the state since they took place. Many players have continued to make progress and the rankings across the state will remain fluid as players continue to develop.

LHP MacKenzie Gore (Whiteville HS, NC), an East Carolina commit, takes the No. 1 spot in the initial Class of 2017 rankings. Possibly the fastest riser in the group with his arrow still heading up, Gore flashed impressive stuff in front of PBR staff at Citi Field in New York a week ago. Up to 93 and sitting 90-91, Gore has added a cutter to his arsenal that has the makings of an advanced pitch. The lean frame has made a jump each season, and don’t be surprised if you see another jump heading into the spring.

SS Noah Campbell (Cardinal Gibbons HS, NC) sits at No. 2.  The South Carolina recruit is a physical 6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Campbell demonstrates the ability to play with speed and strength, running anywhere from 6.6-6.9 60 this summer. A switch-hitter, he has shown the ability to handle velocity and high-end pitching throughout the summer circuit.

Following Campbell, and creating a lot of debate, are OF Austin Beck (North Davidson HS, NC), SS Sam Hall (Topsail HS, NC) and RHP Justin Bullock (South Granville HS, NC).  Beck, a toolsy outfielder and North Carolina recruit, injured his knee late in the high school playoffs. The injury has kept him out for the summer, but a full recovery is expected and his name will continue to be discussed as the top player in the state.

Hall, a Clemson commit, burst onto the scene at the Tournament of Stars in June, making the 40-man trials roster for Team USA. A loose swing that has generated some power is overlooked at times because of how many things Hall does well. A shortstop at Topsail, he played every other infield position and all three outfield spots during the Tournament of Stars, while stealing five bases.

Bullock, a power righty, has been up to 93 in front of PBR staff this summer. A strong frame and repeatable mechanical base will allow him to continue to produce this summer and into the spring. Bullock is a North Carolina State recruit.
