pitchER EVALUATIONS
Darion Alexander, SS/RHP, Minnewaska, 2021
6-foot-1, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.21 runner. Closed stance, leg kick trigger, lower hand slot, solid bat speed out front, flashed hard line drive contact, quality gap to gap approach, 80 mph exit velocity. Solid defender, strong frame, sure hands with appropriate footwork, accurate to bag on throws, 74 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step into medium tucked balance point, clean compact arm action, some stiffness in lower half, upright finish to plate. Fastball was straight at 75-76 mph. Slight break and 11/5 shape on curveball with loose spin. Inconsistent release point on changeup effecting action and control.
Thomas Aragon-Menzel, 1B/LHP, Holy Family, 2020
6-foot-1, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.57 runner. Square stance, leg kick trigger, repeats swing, works down and through ball at contact, line drive swing plane, 62 mph exit velocity. Fields routine, sure hands, solid around bag receiving throws, 69 mph arm across infield. On mound; steps forward to roll into crouched balance point, 2-piece arm action and delivers from side-arm slot, lands inline to catcher, arm travels across body, with avg. drive down mound. Fastball has heavy feel to arm-side with running action at 66-68 mph; touching 70 mph. 2/8 breaking ball has avg. spin and shape. Varying run and cut action on changeup with solid fade.
Brett Bateman, OF/LHP, Mounds View, 2020
5-foot-8, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.16 runner. Tall balanced stance with knee to knee trigger, shows hard line drive contact to middle of field, stays on and through baseball well. 82 mph exit velocity. Solid in outfield with above avg. arm, works through ball, has footwork and sure hands, shows actions in field and covers ground well, 84 mph arm from outfield. Bateman did not have the highest velocity at the event, but he presented himself as a more polished left-hander with a quick arm who could make a jump as his frame matures. Currently 5-foot-8, 145-pounds, the young looking southpaw sat 79-80 with his fastball which he threw to the bottom of the zone. He showcased some feel for a changeup with arm side life at 72-75, but it was his curveball that set him apart. Thrown with fastball hand speed, and featuring tight, two-tier break and 1/7 shape, Bateman’s curveball has a chance to be a weapon moving forward. He throws the pitch with confidence at 67-69, and as he continues to get stronger, he may throw it harder in the future. Still a bit further away given his size, Bateman’s quick arm and feel for the curveball makes him an interesting arm to follow, especially since he is a left-hander.
Carter Baumler, RHP/OF, Dowling Catholic (IA), 2020
Baumler’s athleticism stood out at the event, and given his long frame and strong arm, he will likely be one of the more talked about recruits throughout the summer. Standing 6-foot-2, 187-pounds with lean strength throughout, Baumler comfortably touched 90 mph with his fastball without so much as breaking a sweat. Working linear down the mound with a still-head at release, Baumler delivered fastballs at 89-90 out of a high ¾ slot without much use of his lower-half. The pitch featured heavier arm side life at times, and he was able to routinely throw it to the bottom of the zone. His slider was tight at 77-79, and looks to be a future out pitch moving forward. It was thrown with fastball hand speed, and featured shorter, late-breaking action. Also a 6.81-runner in the 60-yard dash and an excellent defender in the outfield, Baumler’s athleticism should allow him to continue making quick advancements in coming years. At the plate, the right-handed hitter has a simple approach with a short stride that allows his hands to work the barrel fast, uphill through the zone with strength. Still a bit raw, he should be even better by the time the Future Games rolls around in August. Overall, Baumler is certainly one of the top athletes in the class, and as he continues to get more game action against higher level competition, expect him to blossom into one of the better prospects as well.
Nathan Brennan, 1B/RHP, Fourth Baptist Christian, 2020
6-foot-3, 210-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.95 runner. Open stance, rolling hand load, strides square, solid present strength, stiffer swing through contact, tends to roll hands over early, pull approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Higher fielding positon, fields routine, solid receiver at bag, 71 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short tuck and turn into balance point, long one piece casting arm action, swings down mound and lands inline with catcher. Fastball was 72-74 mph with varying action to plate. 12/6 curveball has early break with bigger shape. Turns changeup over creating solid fade on slight downhill plane.
Jeremy Brown, 1B/RHP, North St. Paul, 2020
6-foot-2, 200-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.45 runner. Square stance with leg kick trigger, loads hands into lower slot, inside out at contact, works middle of field, consistent solid contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, avg. actions and footwork, solid around bag, accurate arm, 73 mph arm across infield. On mound; controlled rocker step into paused medium balance point, short cocked arm action, lands inline with solid extension to plate. Fastball was 73-75 mph with heavy action at plate. Small break on loose spinning 11/5 curveball. Throws changeup near fastball hand speed creating cutting action to plate.
Leo Bustos, RHP, Mahtomedi, 2020
6-foot-4, 190-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Bustos has long limbs on his 6-foot-4, 190-pound frame, and could pack on even more strength in the future. Delivering out of a near ¾ slot, Bustos possesses a loose, whippy arm, and works free and easy. He was uptempo throughout his delivery stepping slightly across his body before pumping fastballs at 82-84. It looked harder than what the radar read, and with his long arms, he was able to get extended towards the plate. He dropped his slot a bit on the breaking ball which sat 68-69, but showed feel for a sinking changeup at 73-75. As he continues to grow into his frame, expect Bustos to make a jump, especially as he obtains more innings.
Zach Carden, RHP/SS, Benilde St. Margaret’s, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step, hand rhythm to upright balance point, compact arm action, clean out front. Fastball was 83-84 mph, varying late action, and jumps through zone well. On side of breaking ball creating slower break and inconsistent 11/5 shape. Slight sink with arm-side run on changeup for strikes. 7.01 runner. Square stance, larger movements in load and stride, effects timing, shows clean bat path through zone, pull approach, has solid bat speed, with flashes of hard contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Works around and through baseball, creates direction to throw, sure hands, high fielding position, solid overall actions, accurate to bag on throws, 81 mph arm across infield.
Mitchel Casperson, SS/RHP, LeSueur-Henderson, 2020
5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Casperson was in control of his athleticism in all facets of the workout, and was one of, if not the, top position player on the weekend. The 5-foot-9, 150-pounder began the day by running a 6.9 60-yard dash, and then showcased his balanced swing at the plate. The left-handed hitter utilizes a short stride to rock his hands easily down and back before working uphill through the zone. He showcased quickness to the ball on a direct path, and had some lag through the zone. I was impressed by how mature his round was. He was never rushed and didn’t try to do too much although the ball came off his bat well, and he projects for gap power in the future. In the field, he showed off natural hand play and a quick, strong arm across the diamond. His footwork was clean and he should only get better with more repetitions. Also utilizing his quick, whippy arm on the mound, Casperson worked his fastball up to 82 mph, and had feel for both his breaking ball (67-68) and changeup (75-76). Most intriguing about the young infielder is the fact that he is still growing, and the added strength that will come could vault him as a prospect moving forward.
Luke Chapman, RHP, Rogers, 2020
6-foot-1, 165-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Short rocker step into uptempo tall balance point, long stride down mound, short arm action with wrap behind head, has extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 73-75 mph with varying action to plate. Breaking ball tends to back up on hitter with loose shape. Tumbling action on changeup with avg. fade and sink.
Ben Dandelet, RHP/3B, Stillwater, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. The long, 6-foot-2, 170-pound right-hander appears to be another in what is becoming a long line of pitchers coming out of Stillwater High School. Still showing signs of more physical growth and filling out in the future, Dandelet worked 83-85 with a fastball that jumped through the zone. Throwing slightly over his front shoulder as he sat on his back side down the mound, Dandelet deceptively works linear down the mound. I was impressed with the adjustments that he made throughout the bullpen, especially with the breaking ball. The pitch worked 70-72, and featured sharper, slider type break on some occasions, but more 11/5 curveball break at others. He also showcased a changeup at 69-72. Given his long, loose arm and quick hand speed out front, Dandelet should have a chance to make another jump in the future.
Hunter Day, RHP/OF, Bloomington Jefferson, 2020
6-foot-2, 163-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Day’s short, quick arm makes the ball look like its gets on the plate quicker than the radar gun may read. He is aggressive down the mound which also helps the fastball play up even harder. The pitch cut, somewhat, at 82-84, and he countered it with an advanced, power-changeup that was thrown with fastball hand speed and featured late sinking action at 78-79. He also featured a tighter slider at 74-75 with short break that has a chance to be an above average pitch moving forward. Standing 6-foot-2, 165-pounds, Day has wiry strength on an athletic frame, and should continue to fill out in the future. Day’s velocity will likely be up even higher this summer as his arm continues to get into shape throughout the spring. 7.12 runner with 80 mph exit velocity and 86 mph arm from outfield. Open stance, leg kick trigger, some length to contact, athletic in box with hard contact to middle of field. Aggressive routes in field, above avg. arm, plays through ball, raw with 2 hands to field, accurate with carry to target.
Teddy Deters, SS/RHP, Orono, 2021
6-foot-1, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.28 runner. Long athletic frame, square stance, body load with leg kick trigger, solid bat speed, loses posture at contact looking to elevate baseball, flashes pop in bat with hard pull side contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Choppy footwork, quick and covers ground laterally, sure hands, solid athleticism, accurate throws to bag, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; turn into tucked higher balance point, long arm action with stab down on backside, works from OT slot, tends to fall down mound after release. Fastball was straight with occasional varying action at 77-79 mph. Above avg. changeup with feel for zone; showing fade with late sinking action. Small break on 11/5 curveball at 62-65 mph.
Brant Dickison, OF/RHP, Rochester John Marshall, 2020
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.2 runner. Square stance with leg kick trigger, rolling hand load, avg. rhythm in swing, some stiffness through contact, spray contact across whole field, 77 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, heavier feet with avg. glove, low ¾ arm slot, sinking action on throws, 77 mph arm from outfield. On mound; long sideways arm action, has athletic actions and body control, lands inline to catcher. Fastball was 75-77 mph with late heavy running action for strikes. Inconsistent release point on breaking ball creating loopy 11/5 shape. Avg. feel for zone with changeup showing arm-side run.
Rodney Erickson, OF/RHP, Woodbury, 2020
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.15 runner. Athletic balanced stance, body load, lower hand slot, looks to elevate baseball, flashing of hard contact with potential pop in bat, worked mostly mid/away, 85 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes, sure hands, clean high ¾ arm action, creates direction with feet, solid accuracy and carry to target, 81 mph arm from outfield. On mound; taller tuck and turn, leaks out of balance point early, long hitchy arm action on backside, clean out front from low ¾ slot. Fastball was 75-77 mph with flashes of running action. Tighter slider with 10/4 shape and higher spin rate. Straight changeup with avg. fade and sink.
John Erickson, SS/RHP, Hudson (WI), 2020
5-foot-11, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Lean athletic frame. 7.06 runner. Square stance, shoulder load with knee to knee trigger, aggressive swing with present strength, stiffer 2 hand finish through contact, flashes hard line drive and pull contact, gap to gap approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Sure hands in field, works through ball, above avg. arm, avg. footwork that should improve with instruction, flashes athleticism and actions in field, 88 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step into low balance point, short sling shot arm action, lands slightly across body, with minimal effort in delivery. Fastball was 79-80 mph with deception in delivery and flashes of life through zone. Slurvy shape and break on curveball with avg. depth. Solid fade and down action on changeup for strikes.

6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.07 runner. Open stance, preset hands, slight leg lift trigger, flashes hard line drive contact, mid/pull approach, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid/avg. actions in field, covers routine balls, sure hands, avg. momentum through baseball, short arm action, accurate to target, 77 mph arm from outfield. On mound; rocker step into higher balance point, hard stab down in arm action and works up and over front side, arm is clean out front and shows solid hand speed. Fastball was 80-82 mph with sneaky life through the zone. Loose spin on 11/5 curveball with small break. Good hand speed on changeup with down action and solid fade. 6.9 runner. Tall stance, easy leg kick and hand load, repeats swing well, line drive swing plane, shows ability to elevate baseball, present strength, consistent hard mid/pull contact and is a bat to follow in MN 2020 class, 93 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, solid footwork, softer hands, longer exchange and release, solid accuracy to bag, 83 mph arm across infield. On mound; short rocker step into quicker tuck and turn balance point, long casting arm action, hooks around baseball on release, and lands across body. Fastball was 82-84 mph with heavy action and is sneaky quick on hitter. Sharp breaking ball with larger break for strikes. Good hand speed on changeup creating fade and depth.
Sean Goldman, RHP/OF, Mound View, 2020
6-foot-1, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; lanky build with long legs, solid tempo and rhythm in delivery, high tuck and turn balance point, long sideways arm swing, lands inline to plate. Fastball was 74-77 mph with late cutting action to plate. Loose spin on breaking ball created by hand being underneath at release. Down action on changeup with straight plane to plate. 7.00 runner. Square stance, long stride, choppy rhythm, line drive swing plane, loses posture through swing, spray contact, 79 mph exit velocity. Long lean frame in field, long clean arm action, covers ground well, sure hands and projects defensively, 80 mph arm from outfield.
Logan Grimm, RHP/1B, Mounds View, 2021
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; short rocker step into methodical delivery, lands with stiffness in lower half, compact arm arm, and tends to fall down mound. Sure hands, avg. tempo and rhythm, long exchange on throws, solid around bag, 71 mph arm strength.
Thomas Gross, SS/RHP, Minnetonka, 2020
6-foot-2, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Gross’ frame stands out as he is lean and athletic with long limbs, and moves well on the field. He had a natural rhythm to his swing with shorter hands load back with a leg kick. His direct path to the ball was on a flat plane, and he showed the ability to hit line drives from gap to gap without being out of control, and posted a 91 mph exit velocity. With solid hands and a strong arm (86 mph across infield), he should have a chance to stick on the left side of the diamond moving forward. Given his frame at 6-foot-2, 170-pounds, he has the look of a pitcher when he hops on the mound. He was up to 84 mph with his fastball without much use of his lower-half, and his quick arm combined with his athleticism should allow him to continue to progress in the future.
Blake Gulden, LHP/1B, Wayzata, 2020
6-foot-1, 160-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. On mound; long lean frame, crouched into balance point, direction to plate, long one piece arm swing, OT slot. Fastball was 73-75 mph with flashes of life to fastball; arm swing is inconsistent but should add velocity as he matures and becomes comfortable with long levers. 1/7 curveball has sharp break for strikes. Creates cutting action on changeup to glove side of plate. Follow arm in 2020 class. 7.65 runner. Square stance, body load, longer stride with deep hand load, some length to contact, barrel works out and around at contact, ground ball and line drives, mid/pull approach, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid footwork, works around and through ball, comfortable around bag, shows soft hands, clean arm action, 76 mph arm across field.
Josh Gullickson, SS/RHP, Wayzata, 2020
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.7 runner. Open stance, knee to knee trigger, inverted plane, spins off at contact, shows solid contact on pitches middle/in, 81 mph exit velocity. Clean playable arm with accuracy and carry, solid defender, avg. range, sure hands, 83 mph arm across infield. On mound; rocker step, leaks early out of balance point which will improve with maturity and strength, lands inline, clean arm action and delivery, shows extension to plate, and should continue to add velocity. Consistent running action on fastball at 78-81 mph. Loose shape and spin on slurvy breaking ball for strikes. Throws changeup near fastball arm speed with solid fade and depth. Follow on mound in 2020 class.
Miles Halligan, RHP/3B, Hopkins, 2020
#337 ranked player in PBR 2020 Overall Rankings. 6-foot-1, 190-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Halligan is an interesting follow moving forward as he possesses a long-limbed, 6-foot-1, 190-pound, developing frame, and a strong right arm. He worked mostly 84-86 with his fastball throughout his bullpen session, and showed some feel for a downward breaking, 11/5 curveball (71-73). The effortless velocity that he showed should only rise in the future as he continues to add muscle to his durable frame. Halligan ran a 7.75 60, 83 mph exit velocity, and was 82 mph across infield. Square stance, knee to knee trigger, shoulder load and leans over plate, lower hand slot, lift in swing plane, stiffer hands but solid preset strength with flashes of pop in bat. Sure hands in field, clean quick exchange, easy arm action, avg. tempo and rhythm, solid overall actions with accuracy and carry to bag.
Carter Hanson, LHP/OF, Bloomington Jefferson, 2021
6-foot-2, 165-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Long lean athletic frame with wiry strength. Strong follow in MN 2021 class. 7.08 runner. Square stance, body load, early rhythm in hands, clean path, line drive and fly ball contact, some stiffness to 2 hand finish, flashes pull-side pop, gap to gap approach, 85 mph exit velocity. Light on his feet and plays with energy in field, shows athleticism, above avg. arm action, clean and loose, accurate with carry to target, 80 mph arm strength from outfield. Clean arm path with athletic actions on mound. Will continue to add strength and velo. Fastball was 77-80 mph with late arm-side run. Inconsistent release point but breaking ball improved the more he threw it. Shows late arm side run and sink on changeup.
Jett Heinen, 3B/RHP, Prior Lake, 2020

Open stance with body load and strides square, easy hand load, line drive swing plane with lift through contact, shows ability to use whole field, hard contact, and has pop in bat, 89 mph exit velocity. Shows above avg. actions at first, works through ball, active feet, comfortable around bag, with arm strength at position, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; high balance point, slight lean in posture, clean delivery with slight stab on backside. Fastball was 79-80 mph; clean out front; with varying action to plate. Developing slider, thrown with solid hand speed, with inconsistent release point and tends to back up on hitter. Avg. feel for changeup thrown with stiff wrist and firm velo.
Teyghan Hovland, SS/RHP, Austin, 2021
6-foot-4, 195-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Long athletic frame, 7.33 runner. Square stance, short to contact, lacks extension through zone, tends to fall away from contact, flashed occasional hard line drive contact, 77 mph exit velocity. Athletic in field, plays through ball, higher fielding position, accurate arm, sure hands, some raw qualities but has enough athleticism to continue to develop, 80 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; simple step through into athletic balance point, short arm action with quickness through, lands with open foot to plate, solid extension with upright finish. Fastball was 79-81 mph with varying action to plate. Breaking ball was 68-69 mph early early shape and break. Pushes changeup to plate; has avg./solid fade and sink.
Joseph Hurth, RHP/3B, Hopkins, 2020
6-foot-2, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. The ball seemed to come right from Hurth’s ear as he pumped fastballs through the zone at 83-85. Stepping well across his body, Hurth released out of a high ¾ slot with a short, strong arm. He shows more intent than effort out front, and his hand works quickly through the ball. He featured a split-finger type changeup at 76-78 and an interesting breaking ball (70-72) that he threw with fastball hand speed and had shorter break. At 6-foot-2, 182-pounds, he shows some developing strength throughout, and should continue filling out in the future. On the field; Hurth ran a 7.4 60, posted a 88 mph exit velocity, and was 84 mph across infield. Rolling hand load into longer stride, creates bat speed, stiffer finish through contact, shows solid pop to pull side of field, active feet, works through ball, plays uptempo in field, hands are slightly stiff but sure, shows ability to make plays, with accuracy and carry to bag on throws.
Brayden Jacobson, 2B/RHP, West Fargo (ND), 2021
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.87 runner. Square stance, easy stride, some length to contact with arm bar in load, solid bat speed, line drive swing plane, barrels baseball well with gap to gap approach, 86 mph exit velocity. Has athleticism in field, clean hands, works through ball, ability to throw from multiple slots with quick release and accuracy to bag, 77 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; controlled rocker step into medium balance point, short compact arm action, lands inline to plate with open front foot. Repeats well and is consistent strike thrower. Fastball has late running action at 79-81 mph. Solid spin rate and shape on 11/5 breaking ball. Flies open on changeup creating flat action to plate.

Fastball was 69-71 mph with slight arm-side running action. Breaking ball has loose spin and 1/7 shape. Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed; creating above avg. run and sink.
Konnor Kirchoffner, RHP/OF, Burnsville, 2020
Ranked #109 in PBR Overall Rankings for the 2020 class nationally. Kirchoffner was one of my favorite underclass arms at this event a year ago, and he was even more impressive on this day. An inch taller at 6-foot-2, and 20 pounds heavier at 190-pounds, Kirchoffner looked the part of a future starter at the next level during his bullpen session. He pounded the zone with his fastball at 87-88 remaining compact throughout his delivery before throwing over a high front shoulder. I found the stride to be a bit shorter, but that only leaves room for him to get even greater use out of his legs which should allow for his velocity to bump up even higher moving forward. Almost ripping the ball out of his mitt, Kirchoffner’s quicker arm swing gave way to a quick hand out of a high ¾ slot. There is some effort out front, but he remains linear throughout while getting extended to the plate. He pounded the zone and exhibited feel for an above average changeup at 73-76 that featured late-fading action. His curveball had tight spin with sharp break in 11/5 shape. He spun it with intent and confidence and it has a chance to be a swing and miss pitch moving forward. With the feel that he shows for three pitches and with more velocity on the way, expect Kirchoffner to be closely followed throughout the spring and summer by college recruiters. Along with his performance on the mound; Kirchoffner ran a 7.02 60, posted an 86 mph exit velocity, and was 89 mph from the outfield. Tall and athletic in box, leg lift trigger, clean swing plane, utilizes a mid/pull approach, and shows ability to drive the baseball to pull side of field. Moves well in field, long strides, fields in rhythm, and showcases an above avg. arm from the outfield.
Maxwell Kohlhepp, OF/RHP, Forest Lake, 2020
5-foot-7, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.51 runner. Square balanced stance, deeper load, length to contact, slashy line drive swing, gap to gap approach, fly ball contact, with avg. pop in bat, 74 mph exit velocity. Quick in field, aggressive routes, sure hands, has carry on throws, clean arm action, avg. carry to target, 80 mph arm from outfield. On mound; high athletic balance point, clean compact arm action, above avg. extension to plate. Fastball jumps through zone at 74-76 mph with straight action. Loose spin on 11/5 breaking ball for strikes. Changeup is straight with avg. fade.
Spencer Krohn, RHP/1B, Zumbrota, 2020
6-foot, 192-pound switch hitting 2-way player. 8.64 runner. On mound; controlled rocker step into balance point, lands slightly cross body, creates deception, and is aggressive down mound with extension to plate. ¾ arm slot producing 76-78 mph fastballs with late run and sink. 11/5 breaking ball has avg. depth. Changeup is firm and flat for strikes. Slight open stance with knee to knee trigger, generates bat speed, shows pop in bat, some length to contact but drives ball well to pull side of field, 81 mph exit velocity. Solid/avg. actions at first, fields routine, accurate arm, 75 mph arm across infield.
Jared Lessman, LHP, St. Croix Falls (WI), 2021
5-foot-9, 150-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Young frame with loose arm action. Slight cocked arm action on backside and is clean and loose out front. Interesting follow prospect in 2021 class. Fastball was 77-79 mph, shows life through zone, with arm-side run to plate. Avg. shape on 1/7 breaking ball that flashes depth. Late arm-side fade on changeup and should develop into a swing and miss pitch.
Drew Lingen, RHP/C, Rochester John Marshall, 2021
6-foot-2, 178-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Longer frame with physical build for age. On mound; short turn into controlled crouched balance point, long sideways arm swing and delivers from ¾ slot, short stride with stiffer lower half in delivery. Fastball was 78-79, touching 81 mph, with consistent arm-side run. Loopy shape and early break on 11/5 curveball. Sinking action on changeup to arm-side of plate. 7.52 runner. Early body load, hovers over back leg, aggressive swinger, uses gaps well, shows strength in bat with flashes of pop, mid/pull approach with fly ball contact, 84 mph exit velocity. Higher stance, avg. sequence and timing with lower and upper half, quick release, has strength in hands to receive, avg. mobility, projectable frame and strength and should continue to improve as he matures, 71 mph arm strength with 2.06-2.21 pop times.
Cade Lommel, LHP/1B, Delano, 2020
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. The velocity isn’t there yet, but as was seen from some big velocity jumps at the event, a year can bring on a lot of change. Lommel has wide shoulders on his long-limbed, 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame. The southpaw has an elastic arm that produces some whip before releasing out of a high ¾ slot. He has a clean, repeatable delivery stepping slightly across his body releasing with normal effort and eyes that try to remain fixed on the glove. His fastball worked 78-80 with some natural arm side life, and it looks like there could be much more on the way given how freely the whole delivery plays. HIs secondary offerings are still more developing pitches including a slider at 70-72 and changeup at 70-71. However, given his long frame and loose left arm, Lommel looks like a pitcher that some schools will want to follow moving forward. As a position player Lommel ran a 7.82 60, was 78 mph across the infield, and produced a 70 mph exit velocity. Slight leg kick with choppy rhythm, consistently works the middle of field with spray contact, moves around first with ease, shows athleticism, and has loose easy actions as a defender.
Gavin Lund, OF/RHP, Farmington, 2020
6-foot-1, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Projectable build that will continue to add strength. 7.28 runner. Open stance, leg kick trigger, shoulder load, looks to elevate, stays inside baseball, flashes hard contact, gap to gap approach with present strength, 83 mph exit velocity. Solid athleticism, plays through ball, sure hands, follows throws, above avg. arm, accurate with carry to target, 85 mph arm from outfield. On mound; short rocker step into athletic tuck and turn, clean arm action, ball jumps out of hand in front, shows extension and finish to plate. Fastball was 78-80 mph with flashes of sink to arm-side. Flashes sharp break on curveball with 11/5 shape. Avg. changeup with straight action to plate. Follow in 2020 class.
Andrew Mahlke, 3B/RHP, Chanhassen, 2020
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.76 runner. Square stance, easy leg kick trigger, some stiffness in hands and load, shows solid middle/in contact, flares oppo, 82 mph exit velocity. Solid first step, solid actions, high fielding position, stiffer hands, long release on throws, 78 mph arm across infield. On mound; long rocker step into crouched balance point, front shoulder tip, arm works up and over and is clean out front. Fastball was 72-74 mph with sinking action to arm-side of plate. On side of breaking ball creating slower 11/5 break with bigger shape. Best secondary was changeup thrown with fastball hand speed creating late sink in bottom of zone.
Blake Mahmood, RHP, Benilde St. Margaret’s, 2020
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Sideways rocker step into uptempo balance point. Athletic delivery with loose actions. Slight wrap on backside but arm is fast and clean out front. Lands across body creating deception with violent head whack on release. Fastball was 85-86 mph with flashes of late arm-side run and sink. Shows arm speed on breaking ball, inconsistent, but flashes tighter spin and 11/5 shape. Cut action on changeup that should continue to develop into an above avg. pitch.
Noah Meffert, RHP/1B, Edina, 2020
6-foot-2, 190-pound right-handed pitcher. Meffert was another pitcher that I really liked last year who has only gotten better since. Now 6-foot-2, and a strong 190-pounds, Meffert has matured into his broad-shouldered, athletic frame. He worked 84-85 with his fastball, and showcased a quick, strong arm as he fell down the mound before releasing out of a high ¾ slot. Pounding the zone with his fastball, he featured more of a firm slider at 74-75 this year as opposed to more of a curveball in the past. The slider has the makings of a swing and miss pitch, and is thrown with fastball hand speed which should allow it to develop more quickly. Overall, there is a lot to like about how well Meffert’s arm works, and given the advancements that he has made over the past year, I suspect he will continue to elevate his game moving forward.
Logan Meyer, SS/RHP, Totino-Grace, 2020
6-foot-1, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.26 runner. Square stance, rolling hand load, steep uphill plane, lacks extension through contact, inconsistent bp but flashed hard contact to middle of field, 78 mph exit velocity. Sure hands, works through ball, tends to stop when fielding, heavier feet, long arm action, accurate to bag, 74 mph arm across infield.
Fritz Meyer, RHP, Minnetonka, 2021
6-foot-4, 182-pound right-handed hitting pitcher. Long lean projectable frame. Short rocker step into higher athletic balance point, reaches across body with land foot, compact arm action, shows extension to plate on release. Fastball was 79-80 mph with varying action to plate. Breaking ball was inconsistent but arm path is shorter which will allow him to find release point and develop feel. Commands changeup well with good feel for zone and above avg. fade. Strong follow in 2021 class.
Caidan Moore, IF/RHP, DeLaSalle, 2021
5-foot-10, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.35 runner. Tall balanced stance, easy leg lift, short to contact, repeats swing well, consistent hard contact, gap to gap approach, and shows ability to use whole field. 78 mph exit velocity. Solid bat to follow in the 2021 class. Fields out front, sure hands, under-developed footwork, solid/avg. actions, accurate to bag, 74 mph arm strength across infield. On mound; short balance point, long casting arm action, some stiffness to delivery, lands on straight front leg. Fastball was 71-73 mph, touching 76 mph, with flat action to plate. Left 11/5 breaking ball short to plate with inconsistent release point. Varying action and fade on changeup.
Jacob Mrosko, OF/RHP, Chanhassen, 2020
Mrosko touched 87 mph in his bullpen after going through the full workout as an outfielder, and I think there is much more velocity on the way in the future. Tall stance with deeper load, varying swing plane, aggressive swinger, hard pull contact, tends to flare oppo. Athletic in field, long strides, covers ground, well above avg. arm with carry and accuracy to target. Still trying to sync up with the long limbs that his 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame holds, he could have a chance to make a big jump as he becomes more comfortable with the new movement patterns. He ran a 7.01 60-yard dash, and has wiry-athleticism throughout his frame. On the mound, he stepped slightly across his body as his loose arm worked freely in the back before delivering out of a high ¾ slot. Though his curveball was thrown slower at 66-68, it did take multi-tier shape, and has a chance to develop even more in the future. He tended to cut his changeup. Given the fact that he is still figuring out how his long limbs move, and the fact that he should be able to add a significant amount of strength, Mrosko is a player to follow moving forward.
Bryce Nelson, SS/RHP, Blaine, 2020
5-foot-7, 150-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.86 runner. Square stance, slight hand load, knee to knee trigger, stiffer swing plane, line drive approach, avg. contact across field, 80 mph exit velocity. Works through ball, tends to stop and start when fielding, solid/avg. range, accurate arm to bag with carry on throws, 77 mph arm across infield. On mound; short turn into lower balance point, leaks out early to stride, heavy wrapping arm action on backside, lands slightly closed with upright finish. Fastball was 74-76 mph with cutting action to plate. Solid spin with slurvy shape on breaking ball. Stiffer actions and tends to push changeup to plate.
TJ Neu, LHP, St. Cloud Cathedral, 2020
5-foot-11, 170-pound left-handed hitting pitcher. Controlled to high knee balance point, swings down mound, short compact arm action with solid hand quickness out front. Produces 77-79 mph fastballs that show solid life through zone with flashes of arm side run. Sharp late break on above avg. 1/7 curveball. Has appropriate arm side run and fade on changeup for strikes.
Matt Olive, C/RHP, Blake School, 2020
5-foot-11, 185-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Olive, a 6-foot, 185-pound, durably-built catcher/pitcher showcased quick hands at the plate and a strong arm throughout the workout. Using a leg kick to work his hands down and back, Oliver works uphill through the zone on a direct path. He demonstrated gap to gap power along with a 91 mph exit velocity off the tee. Still developing some as a receiver behind the plate, Olive’s arm strength allowed him to produce pop times between 2.05-2.10. As he continues to improve his transfer and footwork, that number should go down even lower. On the mound, the strong right-hander ran his fastball up to 85 mph as he remained compact throughout the delivery before giving way to a loose arm swing and quick hand speed out front. Smooth and polished delivery. Consistent command of strike zone with three pitches. Changeup showed fade at 73-75, and breaking ball had shape at 69-72. Interesting follow. I really liked the way Olive swung the bat, and he should continue to progress throughout the spring which will make him a player to follow this summer.
