Session I of the Maryland Preseason All-State featured close to 70 players from across the Old Line State and Delaware. Players were put through a pro-style workout and threw bullpens in front of our PBR Maryland staff with TrackMan and Blast on hand to capture additional data throughout the event. Below are evaluations on the 21 corner infielders at the event.

Michael Atkinson 1B / OF / Dematha Catholic , MD / 2022

Body: 6’3’’, 185 pounds. Projectable, lengthy frame exuding obvious strength in the movements.
Hit: LHH. Relaxed, tall and slightly open stance with the barrel resting on the shoulder to begin. Utilized a short lift and replace stride to initiate the swing through a lightning quick, slightly uphill path into the hitting zone. Extremely efficient in the box allowing for eye-popping measurables. Short stroke overall, which should transfer effortlessly over to gameplay. Accrued a 71% hard hit rate (batted balls over 90 mph) while consistently staying off the ground (36% LD rate / 43% FB rate). A 350 foot peak batted ball distance during his round was an impressive metric, but a 28+ mph average hand speed via Blast Motion stood out the most. All of this on top of solid bat to ball skills (65% on-plane) and a 90 mph AVG exit velocity per Trackman Baseball.
Power: 99 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Home run juice through the RCF gap, pull-side. Can stay on the ball and hammer doubles over the backside outfielders’ head if need be.
Arm: LH. INF - 76 mph. High ¾ slot with minimal restrictions, adequate arm speed with accuracy towards the target.
Defense: Wide base with good posture at the fielding window, approached with quiet feet and a soft glove hand out in front. Stayed in line and let it rip across the diamond. Adequate feel around the bag at first base.

Utilized a leg lift stride with stretch at the land position while entering the hitting zone through a flat, connected path. Tons of confidence and bat to ball skills at the plate with tight turns over the backside hip. Got on plane early and rode the swing path through contact generating an impressive 60% line drive rate during batting practice. Sprayed the ball all over the field, hitting it exactly where it was pitched mostly, working into a stiff front side at impact.
Power: 95 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Obvious XBH pop in the bat with repeatability present, peppered both gaps during batting practice, notching a 306 foot peak batted ball distance.
Arm: RH. INF - 76 mph. Short and quick, high ¾ slot with a sling type of feel to it at times, accurate and slight ASR across the diamond.
Defense: Stayed low to the ground with light, quick feet early. Created down chest angles with a feel for pace from the hot corner, attacked the ball mainly from an athletic base. Handled the play on the run as well.
Run: 7.32 60-yard time.

Joshua Boyd RHP / 3B / Chesapeake , MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 190 pounds. Strong, compact frame with connection throughout.
Hit: RHH. Wide, balanced stance with the hands starting near the head to begin; utilized a gather, bow and arrow type load with a full body rock to the backside, a leg-hang stride created stretch allowing the barrel to enter the hitting zone through a flat path. Flashed some loft in the approached evidenced by a 36% fly ball rate via Trackman Baseball. An 83% on-plane efficiency (Blast Motion) points to the ability to consistently find the bat head at the plate. Room for even more juice as he keeps maturing.
Power: 90 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Near 300 foot batted ball distance with increased barrel awareness should allow for doubles power to the pull-side at the moment.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Takeaway moves down and then back for a full arm circle, no restrictions. Accurate across the diamond with high-intent on throws.
Defense: Arrived on time with an up tempo play style, sometimes stayed behind the ball til the last second and worked through. Semi-soft glove hand with funnels into the belt loop, showcased some feel moving to the glove side during defensive evals. Adequate handle on the play on the run, throwing from the same high-¾ slot as usual.
Run: 8.50 60-yard time.

Carson Brown 1B / 3B / Easton, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 235 pounds. Strong, XL frame with present power in all of the movements.
Hit: RHH. Wide, even stance from a slight bent knee position, as the hands waved quickly near head-height. Utilized a short lift and replace stride to initiate the bat head through a flat, horizontal path with lift after impact. Hit into a stiff front side with jump off the barrel to the pull-side (mostly middle of the field approach). Generated solid hand speed from a short swing with twitch at the plate evidenced by a 24.4 mph average hand speed (Blast Motion). A 68% on-plane efficiency points towards developing bat to ball skills which make him an even tougher out at the plate. Liked the actions overall with ability to project to hit for even more power down the road.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment with a 329 foot peak batted ball distance. Handled the pull-side gap with comfortability during BP.

Cayden Curry RHP / 3B / Kent Island , MD / 2023

Body: 6’0’’, 165 pounds. Lean, athletic, and projectable frame with feel for his body; room to add strength yet.
Hit: RHH. Bent-backside loaded stance with the upper half coiled over it; hands started on the shoulder with an on-time barrel tip working with a deliberate leg lift stride to enter the hitting zone through a slightly vertical path. Created some loft with long levers at the plate (near 30% fly ball rate) punching the ball to both gaps through the middle of the field. Could get lengthy at times on the swing, but shined when staying inside of it, producing his best contact of the round. The ceiling is evident and will be accessed sooner rather than later as he holds more physicality.
Power: 90 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Developing doubles power occasionally to the pull-side.
Arm: RH. INF - 77 mph. Short v-slot with a quick release from a high ¾ look. Accurate on the bag and repeatable in the takeaway.
Defense: Hop step in the prep with ability to stick his foot in the ground and make a decision, light on his feet with a soft glove hand playing with give out in front. Recorded an impressive zero ground balls during his round (33% line drive rate) with a solid 23.8 mph average hand speed at the plate (via Trackman Baseball). Lived through the middle of the field and could turn on the inner half with a quick trigger if pitched there.

Lived through the middle of the field during batting practice with his best swings of the day coming when he got the bat head out in front of the LCF gap. Notched a 46% fly ball rate which played well into the desired approach, a 351 foot peak batted ball distance. Seasoned hitter overall with a mature feel at the plate.

Body: 6’2’’, 210 pounds. Strong, XL frame with power present in the actions.
Hit: RHH. Open, wide stance with quick rhythm in the hands next to the head to begin. Utilized a leg hang stride while doing a good job of holding the backside drive leg with the torso during the forward move. Entered the hitting zone through a leveraged, slightly uphill (flat) path with lift after contact. Was repeatedly on the barrel on this date, generating tons of barrel speed towards the pull-side gap. Hit into a stiff front side allowing for a 43% hard hit rate during his round and 341 foot peak batted ball distance via Trackman Baseball.

Arm: RH. INF - 85 mph. Long takeaway with good extension out in front from an over the top release. Accuracy present with some carry towards the target.
Defense: Solid feel around the bag with short, methodical feet that played on time to the baseball; quality pace during defensive evaluations, made decisions early off the bat. Griffin Horowicz 3B / 1B / Jefferson, WV / 2022

Body: 6’0’’, 175 pounds. Athletic, projectable frame with noticeable strength in the actions.
Hit: RHH. Open, slightly bent stance with a loose feel in the box; hands showed slight rhythm above the shoulder to start. Initiated his swing using a lift and replace stride, entering the hitting zone through a flat, leveraged path with thump to the pull-side. Showcased consistent hand speed at the plate (22.5 mph via Blast Motion) which translated over to standout bat speed (72 mph average). Wore out the LCF gap during his batting practice round while hitting into a strong and stiff front side at impact and was able to be adjustable on pitches down in the zone, aiding an impressive 39% line drive rate.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Current gap to gap pop with occasional home run juice to LF. More to come as he keeps holding more strength on the frame.
Arm: RH. INF - 82 mph. High intent, high ¾ slot with a quick release (no restrictions); accurate across the diamond.
Defense: Above-average footwork and looked like he had a plan on the approach of each route, utilized a quick first step to make decisions early and trusted the glove hand to work in and outside of his feet at the fielding window. Kept momentum moving towards the target with obvious ability to stay at the hot corner moving forward.
Run: 7.68 60-yard time.

Alexander Kennell 3B / RHP / Allegany, MD / 2023

Body: 6’1’’, 240 pounds. XL frame with advanced strength in the movements. Thick lower half build.
Hit: RHH. Wide, even setup with connection to the ground in the stance; hands began at the shoulder from a strong launch position. Utilized a short lift and replace stride and quick, flat path to enter the hitting zone with authority. Not a lot extra going on in the approach creating consistency and efficiency during his batting practice round, hit into a stiff front side with leverage out in front of the plate leading to a standout 46% hard hit rate via Trackman Baseball. Stayed mostly middle of the field with a preference for the pull-side gap when pitched out over the heart of the plate; an 83 mph peak bat-speed was just silly.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. A 315+ foot peak batted ball distance coupled with strength at the plate points towards obvious XBH abilities at the moment, can run it out of the yard with more consistency if he can let the lower half lead a little more in the swing.
Arm: RH. INF - 77 mph. Short, high ¾ slot with a traditional release. Stayed relatively the same when making plays on the move/run.
Defense: Played low to the ground with good posture, beat the ball to the spot he wanted to field it and kept a bent position after funneling into the belt loop. Held momentum well with adequate pace across the diamond from the hot corner.
Run: 7.87 60-yard time.

Griffin Madden 1B / RHP / Allegany, MD / 2023

Body: 6’2’’, 185 pounds. Lengthy, projectable frame with strength and athleticism present in the movements.
Hit: RHH. Open, loose setup with a controlled feel to begin; utilized an on time barrel tip with a leg lift stride in order to initiate the swing through a fluid and impactful, slightly vertical path. Plenty of jump off the barrel to the pull-side with ability to match pitch-plane early in ball flight. Recorded a standout 62% line drive rate per Trackman Baseball while notching an 85% hard hit rate (batted balls over 90 mph). With bat-exit velocities approaching 100 mph, Madden possesses an advanced feel for the hit tool, which should transfer directly over to game play. Minimal intent produces tons of pop and results at the dish; mostly middle, pull side approach, liking to get the arms extended out over the plate. Stayed inside the ball on the inner half with ability to get through that pitch as well.
Power: 99 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Easy home run juice to the pull-side with doubles power on pitches in any quadrant.
Arm: RH. INF - 79 mph. Full arm circle with whip out in front, adequate pace across the diamond.
Defense: Wide setup on the approach with on time feet, soft hand working out in front. Projects well at first base with above-average feel around the bag. Can pick it too, giving confidence for his infielders on top of being a good target (6-2, 185 lbs).
Run: 7.64 60-yard time.

Garrett Osborne RHP / 1B / Urbana, MD / 2021

Body: 6’4’’, 215 pounds. Long, Projectable frame with physicality present in the actions.
Hit: RHH. Slightly bent, even stance with the hands starting high above the shoulder. Utilized a short lift and replace stride while landing at a narrow, upright position on the land, entering the hitting zone through a flat path into the hitting zone. Showed loft in the approach (53% fly ball rate) with comfortability using the LCF gap primarily during his batting practice round. Could get handsy at times but demonstrated solid bat to ball skills in the box (68% on-plane efficiency via Blast Motion).
Power: 89 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Developing doubles power with a near 275 foot peak batted ball distance. Created backspin off the bat, but was too steep at times going uphill through the baseball.
Arm: RH. INF - 77 mph. Power high ¾ slot with high-intent on the release and feel for extension out in front.
Defense: Arrived on time from a wide base with the glove hand working out in front and alligator-arming inwards on the funnels. Somewhat stiff glove played with relative consistency and showed the ability to pick it on balls in the dirt during defensive evaluations.
Run: 8.18 60-yard time.

Matthew Roche 3B / 1B / Churchill, MD / 2022

Body: 6’0’’, 180 pounds. Strong, projectable 6-foot, 180-pound frame with athleticism in the actions.
Hit: RHH. Loose, open stance with the barrel starting straight up and down from a low position at the chest. Utilized a short lift and replace stride allowing the barrel to enter the zone through a twitchy, slightly vertical path into the hitting zone. Featured tight turns at the plate and flashed the ability to consistently hit the ball hard during his batting practice round, spraying hard contact through the middle of the field primarily using a line drive approach (36% line drive rate via Trackman Baseball). An 86 mph average bat exit velocity compares admirably to his 96 mph peak, showing off the barrel accuracy he possesses.
Power: 96 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Has been up to a 360+ foot batted ball distance in the past, (304 feet on this date). Present pop to pull side and ability to run it out of the yard when pitched up above the thighs.
Arm: RH. INF - 83 mph. Short and quick, high ¾ slot with a hitchy takeaway at times. Accurate across the diamond with slight ASR at times.
Defense: Started wide and attacked with the feet always moving, adequate posture at the fielding window, and kept the shuffles gaining ground towards the target while funneling into the beltline. Solid pace during defensive evaluations with a smooth glove hand, should be able to stick on the left side moving forward.
Run: 7.17 60-yard time.

Leo Simpson 3B / RHP / Walter Johnson, MD / 2023

Body: 5’10’’, 175 pounds. Strong, uber-athletic with good proportions throughout.
Hit: RHH. Balanced, even stance with a slight bend in the knees as the hands showed controlled, moderate rhythm at the shoulder. Utilized a lift and replace stride to initiate the bat head through a short and fluid, flat path into the hitting zone. Showed some burst at the plate with punch to the pull-side, accruing a 40% line drive rate and 27% hard hit rate during his round of batting practice. Stayed in the legs well with minimal head movement in the swing generating quality bat to ball skills (66% on-plane efficiency via Blast Motion).

Stayed behind the ball well and in the legs creating lift through the middle of the field during his BP round. Generated a standout 67% line drive rate and when he missed, missed with authority up and deep to the LCF gap. Notched a standout 42% hard hit rate via Trackman Baseball and registered a 341 foot peak batted ball distance. Low effort bat speed (67 mph average) created efficient juice (92 mph exit) pointing towards the ability to carry the same swing over to gameplay.
Power: 92 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Easy doubles power at the moment with connection throughout the swing.
Arm: RH. INF - 72 mph. Quick, high ¾ slot with a moderate takeaway. Accuracy across the diamond from a fast release.
Defense: Quick footwork starting from a hop step in the prep footwork, stayed on the toes with a feel for pace in the approach, got the body turned and lined up in-line towards the target with consistency. Solid funnels inward from a soft glove-hand presented out in front of the body.
Run: 7.68 60-yard time.

Stayed mostly upright in the posture while hitting into a stiff front side; showed impressive hand speed at the plate (24.8 mph max via Blast Motion) with punch through the middle of the field during his round. Room for more as he continues refinement, an average of 21.9 G’s of rotational acceleration (Blast Motion) points to a big time power ceiling down the road.
Power: 88 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Doubles power at the moment especially to the pull-side gap. Got negative on the attack at times on this date which, if cleaned up, will pose exponential gains in the power department.
Arm: RH. INF - 81 mph. Full arm circle releasing from a high ¾ slot, accuracy across the diamond.
Defense: Arrived on time with exceptional pace during defensive evaluations. Worked right foot, left foot, funnel and release, giving confidence that he can hold down the hot corner moving forward. The glove hand showed smoothly out in front with on time funnels and flow on the approach, made the play on the run with confidence too.
Run: 7.75 60-yard time.

Jacob Whiteman RHP / 3B / North East, MD / 2022

Body: 6’3’’, 190 pounds. Lengthy, projectable frame with a high-waisted build.

Brendan Yagesh LHP / 1B / Urbana, DE / 2022

Body: 6’2’’, 187 pounds. Lanky, athletic frame with a high-waist and good proportions all around promoting extra strength gains in the near future.
Hit: LHH. Balanced, even stance with a loose setup as the hands started with rhythm just above the shoulder. Utilized a minor toe tap stride on time with a barrel tip in order to initiate the barrel through a slightly vertical path with thunder through the zone. Liked to get leveraged and extended working short to long in the swing towards impact; ambushed pitches over the plate and dealt damage with a 62% hard hit rate via Trackman Baseball. A 54% hard hit rate bodes well for his ability to hit for average down the line as well, coupled with a standout 81% on-plane efficiency per Blast Motion. All in all, you’re looking at enough feel for the hit tool that he could be a legitimate two way threat at the next level.

Utilized a quick, sweeping lift and replace stride early in ball flight that connected to the ground on time; entered the hitting zone through a flat path allowing for a mostly line drive approach through the middle of the field during batting practice (36% line drive rate). A 21% hard hit rate (batted balls over 90 mph) via Trackman Baseball pointed towards the consistency he put together at the plate, while an average of 21+ G’s of rotational acceleration hints at a big power ceiling down the road.
Power: 91 mph exit velocity during BP per TrackMan. Accrued a 316 foot peak batted ball distance with the aforementioned power ceiling. Doubles power at the moment plugging the LCF gap on occasion, but will only continue seeing those numbers head north.
