Maryland 2016 Draft Prospects

With the 2015 MLB Draft now in the books, we thought there was no time like the present to begin looking at the early 2016 draft prospects from the state of Maryland. Obviously there is still plenty of time for players to make their mark and rise and fall from the rankings, but here are some early potential prospects that could hear their named called next June (in alphabetical order)

Anthony Felitti LHP Gaithersburg
The most polished pitcher in the state at this point. The lefty has a long and free arm action from a high ¾ arm slot.  Was up to 88 mph this spring and will need to maintain his velo. Shows a breaking ball with 2/8 action and potential at next level. Gets lower half involvement, sometimes closes hips off. Pitches with regular effort. A lot to like about the prospect with a lanky frame that should continue to fill out at 6-foot-2 170-pounds.

Matt Mervis 1B/3B/RHP Georgetown Prep
Mervis is a dangerous hitter from the left side with power potential. Short swing with extension through contact. Physically mature at 6-foot-3 225-pounds.  Athletic first baseman that gets rid of the ball.  He will also get looks because of his strong arm and low 90 mph fastball.

Nick Pantos RHP Gaithersburg
Short and quick arm action from a high ¾ arm slot.  He showed a power breaking ball at 75 mph. Pitches with some effort and could use more lower half. Another athletic arm that has been up to 89 mph and is still filling out his frame (6-foot-4, 180-pounds).  Limited in innings this spring to rest, when he is on there is a lot to like. Still plenty of raw ability.

Elliot Zoellner RHP St. Mary’s
He throws from a high ¾ arm angle with very quick arm speed and free arm action.  He displays a smooth rhythm and the ball jumps out of his hand with easy effort.  Fastball has some run and occasional cut up to 89 mph. A sharp breaking ball with 10/4 movement and potential to be a power type pitch at 74-76 mph. He showed fastball arm speed on his changeup and the pitch had sink on it at 77-79 mph. Might have the most electric arm in the state. Few things to clean up could increase the value of this prospect. Was shut down over spring to rest arm.

Other Names to watch for

+ Tyler Blohm, LHP Archbishop Spalding
Nice frame at 6-foot-3 175-pounds and left handed.  If his velocity can increase and maintain there, should be on some radars.

+ Dalton Stewart SS Boonsboro
Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 175-pounds and a lot of raw ability out of the prospect.
