Preseason Power 25: No. 11-15
March 24, 2020
With the high school baseball season on hold until April 13, we took a Twitter poll on whether our followers wanted us to release our Preseason Power 25 now, or wait until a few days before the season. The decision was overwhelmingly in favor of releasing it now.
Over the course of the next few days, we will release five teams at a time and highlight some key players from each squad. This will lead up to revealing our Preseason No. 1.

Today we take a look at the teams ranked No. 11-15.
11 Breckinridge CountyKey Losses: John Higdon, Kobe Poole, Cole Tabor,
Key Returners: Brock Lucas, Preston Cottrell, Isaac Seeger, Jacob Ball, Kaeveon Mitchell
The Fighting Tigers posted a 29-6 record last spring, claimed the 3rd Region Championship, and advanced to the State Semifinals before losing to eventual State Champion Tates Creek. Though they lose three key starters from the 2019 squad, Breck County returns plenty to make them the favorite in the 3rd region again this spring. Back to lead the pitching staff are senior RHP Preston Cottrell (USI recruit), senior RHP Brock Lucas (Tennessee recruit), and sophomore RHP Isaac Seeger. That trio combined to go 19-3 last spring. The offense will be led by Lucas who hit .396 with 12 doubles, 5 triples, 3 home runs and stole 37 bases in 39 attempts. Seeger, Jacob Ball, and Kaeveon Mitchell round out the top returning offensive performers.
12 Madison Central
Key Losses: Devin Hukill, Scott Simmons, Ben Snapp, Lucas Myers, Devin Ecklar
Key Returners: Bryce Travis, Brandon Anderson, Noah Metcalfe, Colton Perkins, Carter Ruffner, D’Marko Foster, Bobby Vasquez, Brady Vaughn
Coming off a 27-10 record that saw them bow out to Tates Creek in the 11th region semifinals, the Indians will need to replace quite a bit of offense in the everyday lineup. Junior SS Brandon Anderson, a Louisville commit will lead the offensive attack after hitting .364 with 7 doubles and 18 RBI as a sophomore last spring. Asbury recruit Colton Perkins and Campbellsville recruit D’Marko Foster, and Eastern Kentucky recruit Bryce Travis should contribute heavily to the offense as well. On the mound, Travis will head the staff after racking up 71 strikeouts in 49 IP last season while posting a 1.28 ERA.
13 Rowan County
Key Losses: AJ Hacker, Shane Taylor, Corey Binion, Matthew Gagliano, Ryan Mullen
Key Returners: Mason Moore, Chase Alderman, Devon Stephens, Nicholas Eastham,
Gone is the PBR Kentucky Player of the Year and Kentucky Mr. Baseball AJ Hacker, but the Vikings still return a very formidable 1-2 punch on the mound in junior RHP Mason Moore (Kentucky commit) and sophomore RHP Chase Alderman who is highly-ranked in the 2022 class. Moore posted a 9-2 record last season with 83 strikeouts and just 9 walks in 54 IP, and Alderman posted a miniscule 0.68 ERA while winning 5 games against no defeats. Look for Alderman, Devon Stephens, and Nicholas Eastham (a Midway recruit) to lead the offense. The Vikings are coming off a 39 win season and trip to the State Tournament where they lost to McCracken County 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
14 Lexington Christian Academy
Key Losses: Matthew Johnson, Griffin Sahli, Andrew Branstetter
Key Returners: Evan Byers, Cameron Smith, Jaxson Davis, Cade Guadalis, Hayden Collins, Cole Ginter, Clay Matthews, Elijah Hammond, William Vernon
The Eagles are coming off an 18-15 record in the ever-tough 43rd District, but don’t let that fool you as this team has a lot of young talent and is led by two experienced seniors Evan Byers and Cameron Smith. Byers, a LHP and Kentucky recruit, is fully healthy after not pitching the majority of last season and will anchor a pitching staff that also includes junior Jaxson Davis and his fastball that reaches into the low 90’s. Smith, a South Alabama recruit, returns to lead the offense along with Davis, Byers, Cade Gudalis, Clay Matthews, and Will Vernon. Keep an eye on a pair of sophomores in Hayden Collins and Cole Ginter.
15 Highlands
Key Losses: Grady Cramer, Cooper Schwalbach, Chris Bridewell, Trent Johnson, Bryce Ziegler, Steven Grimme
Key Returners: Ethan Kavanagh, Jake Gulley, Collin Hollingsworth, Mason Schwalbach, Charles Owen Carris, Braden Becker, Nathan Gesenhues
Highlands posted a 29-10 record last spring on their way to making the 9th Region championship game before a defeat at the hands of Beechwood ended their season. Back to lead the Bluebirds offense is Kentucky recruit Ethan Kavanagh. The SS, one of the top players in the 2020 class, hit .500 last season with 14 doubles, 3 triples, and 4 home runs. Jake Gulley brings a fastball that reaches into the low 90’s to anchor the pitching staff that will also get a boost from senior LHP Collin Hollingsworth who is returning from injury. That duo forms a very good 1-2 punch on the mound and looks to get help from Charles Owen Carris, Evan Rom, and Braden Baioni.
