On Oct. 25, the PBR Illinois staff hosted its final event of the year: the Underclass Showcase. This event was open to all of the state’s prospects in its 2023, 2024, and 2025 graduating classes, and allowed us to end the 2020 showcase circuit with a bang.

Our staff was treated to a look at some of the brightest up-and-coming talents in the state, and we began our event breakdown in the days that followed, when we published instant analysis in the form of our Quick Hits and Statistical Analysis stories. We also began to publish scouting reports from the showcase last week, with the event’s catchers and outfielders, and infielders – and we’re onto the pitchers today.

This group revealed a pair of impactful underclassmen, emerging as some of the top prospects in the entire region. Freshman RHP Luke Oblen (DePaul College Prep, 2024) committed to Louisville in the weeks that followed this event. At the showcase, Oblen authored the day’s most efficient ‘pen while displaying premium upper-80s velocity, especially for a freshman. He utilized an advanced offspeed mix of a curve and change, too, to complete a stellar three-pitch mix that has Oblen presently ranked inside the country’s top-25 within our recently released 2024 national rankings.

This event also provided us with our first look at robust RHP Derek Jahn (Warren Township, 2023) who exploded onto the radar after his performance at this showcase. Jahn sat exclusively in the low-90s and he reached a 93 mph high. He’s a strong, physical 6-foot righty with upside offspeed, flashing one tight, late-breaking slider, in addition to an advanced changeup that he showed the feel to locate. We’ll brush up our in-state 2023 rankings soon, but Jahn made a loud debut on the national board this winter first, ranked inside the top-375 overall.

Lanky freshman RHP Michael Furmanek (Plainfield East, 2024) is another who took full advantage of his PBR event debut. He maneuvered his long levers well to produce advanced velocity for his age, sitting 84-85 mph here. That, in conjunction with his projectable 6-foot-3 physique, made Furmanek another noteworthy follow to come out of this event.
