Illinois Class of 2024 Rankings Update: Uncommitted Follows

By: Diego Solares
Area Scout, Illinois & Missouri

Late last week our staff updated the state's Class of 2024 rankings for the first time since October, expanding the board to 75 names and shuffeling plenty of players across the landscape of it.

To learn more about the top of that class, and our official release, click HERE.

Today we'll shine some light on several of the state's uncommitted sophomore prospects that are gearing up for one of the more integral summers of their amateur careers. Below you'll find players scattered across our up-to-date board that are still uncommitted, with bits of brief information on each.

UNCOMMITTED FOLLOWS

Samuel Chapman OF / Woodstock , IL / 2024

From 2/26/22
: “Another left-handed-hitting 2024 who continues to show well. Chapman has cut his 60-yard dash time down to a 7.14 on Saturday (7.39, previously) and he continues to show off the same prowess with the bat that we have become accustomed to. It's a whippy, loose swing and the barrel stays in the zone a long time, covering both sides of the plate. Chapman continues to show advanced outfield actions as well, with fluid footwork and a loose, quick, easy arm. The ball exploded out of the hand at times and topped at 91 mph.”

Jonah Weathers 3B / Marian Catholic, IL / 2024

From 9/19/21
: "6-foot-2, 165-pound, long-limbed, projectable, right-handed hitting, multi-positional prospect. Where he ends up defensively remains to be seen but his right-handed bat continues to catch eyes wherever he goes. Simple, highly-repeatable swing with excellent balance. Head/eyes stay quiet, lets the barrel work through the zone with ease and stays through the zone a long time. Whole field approach with advanced bat-to-ball skills. Seems to be on the barrel consistently. Defensively, has the actions and arm to play on the left-side of the diamond but is also athletic enough to profile in the outfield. Also, jumps on the mound and fills up the strike zone while pitching in the low-80’s. High-follow 2024."

Landon Mensik SS / Lincoln-Way Central , IL / 2024

Was a standout for Lincoln-Way Central this spring and has been an intriguing two-way prospect for some time now. Mensiks final offensive stats from the 2022 Regular Season:

.417 BA, 35 hits, 8 doubles, 2 triples, 3 HRs, 19 RBI and 33 runs scored. Only struck out six times in 95 plate appearances and went 20-22 in stolen bases.

Below is a pitching report from 2021 when Mensik saw time on varsity as a freshman.

From 5/17/21: “6-foot-1, 160-pound, lean, athletically-built, right-handed pitcher. Came out of the bullpen as a freshman for Lincoln-Way Central. Struck out two in 1.1 innings pitched. Polished, athletic, repeatable delivery; clean, connected arm action, plays out of a high ¾ slot with quickness out front. Absolutely pounded the strike zone with his fastball/slider combination throwing 83% of his 23 pitches for strikes. Fastball, commanded the zone, occasional late arm-side action. Slider works 11/5, feel for the zone, depth at times; action is in between a curveball and a slider at this point. Should continue to sharpen/tighten as he gains strength and arm speed; chance to be a go-to put-away pitch in the future. High-follow 2024 prospect.”

David Cox SS / Nazareth, IL / 2024

From 5/17/22:
“...stands at a physical 6-foot-3, 190-pounds with plenty of raw strength on both sides of the ball. He blasted his hardest hit ball at 98.8 mph at the Preseason All-State this winter, threw a 90 mph strike across the infield, and ran his fastball up to 89 mph last week against Yorkville, sitting at 85-87 mph with a mid-70s slider to pair. Cox looks the part as one of the state’s top two-way follows, and he’s still uncommitted: “
