Oct. 6 Mobile Prospect ID Scout Analysis: Catchers

Zane Steele (2021, C/RHP, Baker FL) Steele had one of the more productive days at the event as he showed well as a catcher and right handed pitcher. The solidly built Steele showed a very athletic stance behind the plate and was set low which allowed him to really handle the pitch down in the zone and showed very solid mechanics and quick recovery on balls in the dirt. The arm strength is there as he was 76 mph from behind the plate and an event best 2.03 pop time. At the plate he showed a slightly open stance and a leg kick approach to generate juice to his pull side. The swing plane had some tilt in it. He may have been the most impressive on the mound as he showed a very athletic delivery and hid the ball from hitters very well with a FB up to 86 mph. The pitch has some late life on it as well. The breaking shows tight spin and is a definite swing and miss pitch right now in the upper 60’s- low 70’s. The change up was 70-72 with nice tumble as well. 

Colin Dalton (2022, C/1B, McGill Toolen) Physical ‘22 player that shows some present strength at the plate. Dalton starts with an open stance and a solid base in the lower half. He does a nice job using his lower half in the swing and keeps the hands and barrel inside the baseball. There is some tilt action in the swing plan with a pull side approach. Showed an exit velocity of 83 mph off of a tee. Behind the dish he showed a quiet approach and did a nice job of eliminating a lot of movement. The fundamental catch and throw skills are solid and the arm strength should improve over the next few years as he gets stronger. 

James Lee (2023, 1B/C, UMS Wright) The ‘23 grad has some very nice athletic ability and natural actions on the infield and behind the plate. As a hitter he showed a 79 mph exit velocity and a fairly short., compact approach. The hands have some quickness to them and he did a nice job of staying through the hitting zone with the barrel. There is slight tilt in the bat path and he showed the ability to hit to all fields in BP. On the infield he showed nice lateral range and did a nice job of fielding balls in front of his body. The footwork is solid around the bag and he did a nice job of keeping his momentum moving through the throw. Behind the plate he showed an athletic setup with nice flexibility in the hips. Liked how he received the pitch down in the zone and really worked to extend the plate to both sides on borderline strike. As a ‘23 grad his arm strength should continue to improve but he showed a quick transfer before the throw.
