Today’s Florida Insider will highlight a few third basemen who have made a big impact in recent weeks. Not only do these players have the size coaches are looking for in a college third baseman, they also possess the glove, arm strength, and bat to stay at the hot corner.
Ryan (RJ) Yeager 3B/SS, Crawford Mosley HS 2017
Yeager is an uncommitted incoming junior who stands at 6-foot-3, 170 pounds with a lean, athletic, and projectable frame. At the plate he is relaxed with good rhythm, a wide base, good separation and hand trigger for his load. Yeager has an easy swing with a nice plane, gap power, and he is an above average runner. In the field he has soft hands with quick, athletic feet and he attacks balls hit his way. Ryan has a loose, average ML arm across the diamond and has good range. Right now, Yeager could play shortstop and would likely attract more schools at that position, but he has plenty of bat to draw attention at either spot.
Nicky Agosto 3B/IF, Deane Bozeman HS 2017
Agosto is an uncommitted incoming junior who is 5-foot-11, 195 pounds with a strong, stalky, and athletic frame. He is relaxed with good rhythm and gets a nice separation for his load, has an easy swing, and a nice swing plane. His swing is a little long but he drives the ball to all fields. At third, Agosto has a solid, average arm that is plenty for the next level and he looks like an average runner. Nicky is a 3B/1B type whose bat will carry him and will be the tool that attracts most recruiters.
Ubaldo Lopez 3B/1B/RHP, Archbishop McCarthy 2017
Lopez is an uncommitted incoming junior who is 6-foot-1, 205 pounds with a strong and somewhat stalky frame. He is relaxed at the plate with good rhythm and gets a good separation for his load while his bat gets into a strong position before he starts his swing. Lopez possesses a short, quick swing with a good plane. The ball jumps off his bat with average ML power and he hit a deep home run in front of a few DI schools a couple weeks ago. In the field he has soft hands, good footwork, and plenty of arm to stay at third base at the next level. Ubaldo should be attracting numerous schools in the near future if he is not already.
