Prep Baseball Report is conducting its annual review of recruiting classes, in which Nathan Rode and Shooter Hunt evaluate the current senior talent committed to programs in each of the Power Five conferences, as well as notable mid-majors—or as we like to call them, Power Majors—and the draft risk each of those classes carry. Numbers in the charts below denote where players are ranked in the 2021 Overall Rankings.

ARIZONA

OVERVIEW: This class is filled with big arms and athletes. Susac is the top pitcher in California, featuring a fastball up to 94 to go with a tight, snappy slider. He is the cousin of big leaguer Andrew Susac and current Arizona freshman Daniel Susac. Clark is put together with a powerful build at 6-foot-2, 205 pounds and that strength has a chance to translate to his offense where he flashes the ability to hit lasers to his pull side. Randall has legitimate two-way ability with big right-handed power and a low-90s fastball. Whitaker is a plus athlete, turning in a 6.5 60 with graceful strides, as well as bat speed and controlled aggression at the plate. Gourson has a loose swing from the left side and room to fill out his 6-foot, 175-pound frame. Cortez pumps lively fastballs in the 93-96 range from a short, quick arm stroke. Orloff has a loose arm and sneaky fastball that sits in the high 80s. He also spins a low-70s curveball with depth.

DRAFT RISK: High. The Wildcats took a hit in the 2019 MLB Draft, but picked up some recruits later that summer that softened the blow. Then the 2020 class arrived and is among the best in the country. Depending on who makes it to Tucson, this one is in line to be a top 25 haul as well. Susac will be the toughest to get to campus. Clark, Randall and Gourson will have no shortage of eyes on them in Southern California and in Las Vegas, Whitaker’s raw tools are highly enticing and Cortez’s fastball can’t be ignored. Landing Susac would be a jackpot, but if he signs, holding onto at least a couple of those others will be key.
