LOS ANGELES, CA. - We obviously didn't get as long of a look at players this spring as we, or anyone, wanted. As of this rankings update we still don't know if there will be any portion left of the spring season. Like all of you reading this, we remain hopeful but understand the health implications.

Our team of scouts were out in the fall/winter and into the early part of the spring season, getting as many looks as we could. As always, the evaluation process is a fluid and ongoing endeavor. We feel this rankings list represents the most comprehensive set of player rankings for the 2021 class in the State of California.

In addition to the evaluations of players, our scouts, both those in California and nationally, have also had multiple discussions (most recently on 3/23/20) with each other to review our individual lists and then make adjustments based on what we've each seen. As such, the previous ranking has been scrutinized, picked apart, reorganized... and certainly not for the last time.

There is a new order within the Top 5, including a new No. 1 both in the state and the country. Having had the opportunity to see the players on the field, sometimes with each other at a showcase and other times playing against each other in competition vs other elite competition, we present this ranking with an apples to apples perspective.

It must always be stated that as players develop there is inevitably going to be change. Some players rise as they develop and that necessitates that others fall or are passed. That doesn't always indicate that a player got 'worse' or went backwards, it's just the nature of how rankings work. Being ranked in the state of California obviously means something very positive for each player. After MUCH discussion, we present the updated Class of 2021 player rankings, 150 players deep.

THE TOP FIVE

There’s a new No. 1 player in the state (nation!) and it’s centerfielder Tyree Reed of American Canyon HS (Oregon State commit). A left-hand hitting centerfielder with plus defensive tools, plus speed, and hit tools that are rounding into form, Reed is an electric talent. He's been a contributing player on multiple Team USA medal-winning squads and last August he flashed all the tools at the underclass portion of the Area Code Games. He was just starting to tap into his power potential as the spring season came to a halt. To sum it all up, he sticks in centerfield, hits left-handed and runs, while the hit tool has shown up vs premium competition and we feel there will be considerable power in due time.

Marcelo Mayer (SS) of Eastlake HS (USC commit) is in the No. 2 spot. With a projectable 6-foot-3, 175-pound body and L/R profile, there continues to be a lot to dream on. Mayer has a solid track record of performance, to go along with his tools, as he's shown as a Team USA player and twice as an Area Code Underclass participant. The smooth left-handed swing already possesses extra-base hit ability and oozes projectability with physical maturity. Defensively shows the ability to stay at short with the necessary tools to make him a plus-defender. We feel that his confidence and feel for the game coupled with his extra-base hit ability and defensive prowess suit him well as one of the safest bets in the 2021 class.

Rising to No. 3 (from No. 6) is SS Cody Schrier of JSerra HS (UCLA commit). He's shown elite level defensive tools, with not only outstanding range but a big arm that plays at the premium infield position. The defensive tools are just part of his overall profile. Schrier possesses both power and speed, making him a dynamic talent with multiple ways he can impact the game, along with the energy and intangibles found among the top tier prospects. At 6-foot-2, 200-pounds he is no longer the projectable body type, he's now showing the size and physicality that lends to a clear vision of the player he is capable of being.

Staying in the top five is No. 4 RHP/C Luke Jewett, Schrier's teammate at JSerra HS (UCLA commit). We continue to feel that its likely that he's a pitcher at the college level and beyond but given his tools as a position player, it's still premature to assume he's not a position player (6.92 60-yard, 1.93-2.01 pops, 83 mph arm, 91 mph exit velo). Jewett has a smooth delivery and is able to repeat his mechanics, consistently showing the ability to locate a fastball up to 94 mph (w/down angle as well) and three quality secondary pitches, SL, CB and the CHG, which may be his best secondary pitch.

Rounding out the top five is 2B/OF Roc Riggio of Thousand Oaks HS (Oklahoma State commit). The hit talent is the story with Riggio, as he is the type of pure LEFT-handed hitter valued by the industry. With present day extra base power, including home run power, and a whole field approach, he's a handful for even his elite level pitching peers. His performances vs quality pitching is a big reason that even if projected as a 2nd baseman at the pro level (though also a more than capable outfielder), he's evaluated as an elite prospect. Add to that his attractive style of play, like always going hard out of the box and taking the extra base, and he's a player who is also just plain fun to scout.

INSIDE THE RANKINGS

A LOOK AT NUMBERS 6-10:

No. 6 RHP/SS Eric Silva - Laguna Beach HS (UCLA commit)

Big time outing at Area Code Underclass Games last summer, with the FB touching 95 and an ability to pitch at 92-93 mph. Also has a hard snappy CB with potential to be a plus pitch. Talented SS too.

No. 7 SS Max Muncy - Thousand Oaks HS (Arkansas commit)

Lean and strong, he possesses elite hand speed and also displays good barrel control, producing line drive power to all fields. Defensively has good range, with bouncy feet and a strong and versatile arm.

No. 8 RHP Tonko Susac - Jesuit HS (Arizona commit)

Workhorse build, Susac has three pitches (FB regularly 94 in most recent outing) that all grade out as future plus pitches, with the slider being a future 70. Has a filthy CHG that has REALLY come on. STUFF!

No. 9 OF/LHP Nick McLain - Beckman HS (UCLA commit)

A toolsy outfielder with a plus arm, McLain is also an above average runner (6.86 60) who has present day pull-side power. Switch-hitting now and showing same power from the left side.

No. 10 LHP Gage Jump - JSerra HS (UCLA commit)

Athletically built at 5-foot-11 175-pounds, Jump makes the leap into the top 10 on the strength of a fastball into the low-90's and a tight, multi-tier CB. Easy/smooth arm suggests plenty more is to come.
