REDWOOD CITY, CALIF. - We were at Cañada College on 1/30/22 for the Peninsula/South Bay Preseason ID, our last of five preseason ID events in January. The events were run as straight showcases with a 60, BP, defensive workout and scripted pitching session for the pitchers. TrackMan was active during BP and for the pitching session, while Blast Motion was also active for the hitting session.

QUICK HITS

Listed alphabetically; click on the name for the full profile and additional stats.

Liam Barrett OF / RHP / Mountain View, CA / 2024

5-foot-11, 160-pounds, L/R - An electric two-way talent, lean wiry athletic build, ran 7.18 and that time is trending in the right direction, unleashed a 91 mph throw from the OF, 92.5 max EV in the BP round (96 at a fall event). FB up to 84, sharp and steep CB with the CHG also factoring in to the repertoire.

Antonio Carter OF / Bishop O'Dowd, CA / 2022

6-foot-0, 180-pounds, L/L - One of the more toolsy players still among the uncommitted in Northern CA. Ran a 6.74 60 (we've seen 6.67) and then in the BP round he showed off his plus bat speed, max 29.2 and avg 74.4. Stays on plane, finds barrel, and 95.1 max EV. OF arm was up to 80 mph. Exciting talent.

Jacob Downing SS / 3B / Serra, CA / 2024

5-foot-10, 150-pounds, L/R - All-around talent projects him to stay among the top MIF in the 2024 class in the region. Athletic build, run tool is there (have seen down to 6.99, was 7.24 at this event), INF mph up to 81 (up from 77 last Sept), 95 max EV and line drive consistency, with gliding actions and range.

Ben Giovannetti 3B / 1B / Woodside, CA / 2022

6-foot-0, 210-pounds, R/R - Among the best pure RHH in his class in the region. Combines power, bat speed, process, approach, pitch recognition, and adjustability to multiple zones. Bat speed up to 74 mph, avg 71, outstanding ability to stay on plane and high level barrel to the ball skills. Actions at 3B are fluid.

Matthew Gobel RHP / Lodi, CA / 2023

6-foot-4, 200-pounds - Walks to the mound with a body type that immediately draws a scout's eyes. Long and strong, with long levers. Early season velocity was impressive, up to 87, averaging 84. Having seen 86-87 last year, it stands to reason he will approach 90 this spring. Slider 2536 avg spin rate.

Benjamin Gudoy III OF / LHP / Francis Parker, CA / 2025

5-foot-10, 155-pounds, L/L - Impressive all-around performance, especially so as a freshman. 7.27 60 projects to get quicker as he develops, 84 mph OF arm (very accurate) is good now and will rise, 92 mph max EV will climb as he matures. FB steady at 80 mph with feel of both the CB and CHG. Talented young man.

Jack Lanham RHP / 3B / Sequoia, CA / 2023

6-foot-0, 180-pounds, R/R - Gut feel is he develops on mound into a college pitching prospect but shows signs of offensive ability as well. Has three pitches that all flashed both stuff and movement/life and feel. FB up to 83 (cool Jan 30 day), slider 78 mph (2287 avg spin) and dive bomb CHG. Excellent delivery.

Spencer Lanz 1B / RHP / Buhach Colony, CA / 2023

6-foot-3, 200-pounds, R/R - Apologize for the missing pic, but it's now in the profile. Now, about him, big two-way talent. Smashed high EV of 100 mph, bat speed peaked at 78 mph, big 82 mph arm at 1B. Fastball up to 84 and both the SL and CB have average spin of 2300. His older brother is also a real talent.

Will Siwinski LHP / St. Ignatius College Prep, CA / 2024

6-foot-1, 170-pounds - The raw velo and spin numbers don't jump off the page, but seeing him in person paints a very favorable picture. Fastball has considerable horizontal movement, running hard to the arm side. BIG steep CB he can land seemingly at will. CHG w/life to bottom of zone. Has touch/feel.

Derek Waldvogel OF / Serra, CA / 2023

6-foot-2, 200-pounds, R/R - Physical build, profiles as power hitting corner OF w/run & throw tools that although are not pluses, are fair (76 mph arm, 7.47 60). It's the LOUD contact, ability to drive the ball in the middle of the field, and consistency of barrel contact. Bat speed routinely in the 70s. Strength plays.
