New Episode LIVE now! - At The Yard Podcast
LATHROP, CA. - Players were put through an extended pro-style workout that included the 60-yard sprint, a round of batting practice, defensive workouts at respective positions, and concluded with pitchers throwing bullpen sessions on the main diamond mound.
We live streamed the workouts all day on our https://pbr.sportschannel.media/ channel. The event stays archived there as well.
We'll publish positional breakdowns info in the coming weeks, but until then here is a brief look at some standouts from the weekend in Quick Hits.
Of note in the stats/data listed below, some players used wood bats, though most used BBCOR bat. The EV numbers were recorded by TrackMan during the live BP portion and also in a front toss session in the cage. The recorded stat for each player fairly reflects their cage front toss round and also what they did in live BP.
(Note: Players are listed in alphabetical order. All showcase videos will be added to player profiles in the near future, hopefully by August 21)
QUICK HITS:
Wyatt Abramson SS / RHP / Casa Grande, CA / 20235-11 165, R/R / 60 - 7.42 / INF - 75 / EV - 86 / FB - T77 / CB - 62-64 Appearing in the most stat categories, he's obviously well-rounded. Easy actions, everything works the way it's supposed to, interesting to consider his ceiling w/physical maturity. |
William Ashley 1B / OF / Branson, CA / 20236-3 165, R/R / 60 - 7.39 / OF - 78 / 1B - 72 / EV - 84 Long/lanky, showed well in OF/1B. Plays gracefully around the bag w/good feet & strong glove skills. Athletic actions w/hints at more OF arm strength & power potential w/strength gains. |
Brad Burnes OF / Marin Catholic, CA / 20236-0 185, R/R / 60 - 7.29 / OF - 78 / EV - 90 Strong young man w/three tools that profile well as a corner OF prospect. The raw power potential & swing tools project very well, the raw arm will steadily tick upward, & he runs enough. |
Xander Estrada 3B / 1B / Benicia, CA / 20235-10 165, L/R / 60 - 7.69 / 3B - 79 / EV - 89 Having seen him twice now, he's one of the better LHH hitters in the 2023 class in N CA. Hitter-ish presence, strong barrel awareness & the swing happens easily. Showed 3B talents as well. |
Jarren Ford 1B / 3B / Will C Wood, CA / 20236-0 220, R/R / 60 - 8.39 / 1B - 76 / EV - 94 The bat talent & skill have shown up in several viewings. It's not just brute strength, he has outstanding swing mechanics, short & powerful. Accurate arm & light feet around the bag. |
John Handy C / SS / Placer, CA / 20245-10 165, R/R / 60 - 7.48 / C - 73 / POPs - 2.22-2.26 / EV - 88 The budding tools & skills put Handy on the list of young catchers to keep an eye on in the coming years. BP round showedability to keep the barrel in the zone & consistent barrel contact. |
Parker Hellekson OF / Roseville, CA / 20235-11 165, R/R / 60 - 7.49 / OF - 79 / EV - 88 Profiles well as a corner OF prospect, the run tool should improve a bit as he ages & the arm will tick upward. Possesses raw strength that showed up in the violence of his contact in BP round. |
Gregory Palamountain SS / 2B / Campolindo, CA / 20235-10 160, R/R / 60 - 6.75 / INF - 81 / EV - 88 Most 'toolsy' player at the event, he's an athlete w/baseball talent/skill. Clearly the run tool is a plus, the footwork at SS is solid & the arm can play. Aggressive swing w/ability to drive the ball. |
Aidan Sakai 3B / RHP / Hillsdale , CA / 20236-2 180, R/R / 60 - 7.29 / 3B - 82 / EV - 86 / FB - T81 / CB - 64-66 / CHG - 65-66 Intriguing all-around talent w/athleticism & tools that should continue to bloom. Runs easy, possesses a strong accurate arm, showed strength w/the bat & a mature 3-pitch repertoire. |
Jack Surdey SS / RHP / St. Francis , CA / 20236-2 165, R/R / 60 - 7.29 / INF - 78 / EV - 81 / FB - T81 / SL - 69-70 If only looking at the numbers he doesn't stand out. However, seeing him twice has given appreciation for the projectable talent. Athletic SS actions & loose quick arm on mound w/SL feel. |
