PBR Western Canada ProCase: Quick Hits
August 21, 2023
On Friday, August 18th, PBR British Columbia and PBR Alberta joined forces to host the 2023 PBR Western Canada ProCase, our second ever ProCase on the west side of the country and first since 2018. The event saw 23 prospects, predominantly from BC, descend on McLeod Athletic Park in Surrey, British Columbia for a pro-style workout, along with live-game action.
The ProCase allows our staff, as well as pro scouts covering Canada, to get a look at top players in the region who have established themselves as potential pro prospects in the coming years. Not only does the event draw interest from pro scouts, but our staff has fielded several calls since the event from college coaches with a plethora of high-end uncommitted players in attendance.
Today, we begin to break down everything our staff saw at the event with scouting notes and video on five players who stood out.

Austin Goesen SS / 2B / Windsor Secondary , BC / 2024The 2024 Middle-Infielder had an impressive day at the Western Canada ProCase. During his round of BP, he showed off his balanced swing and effective approach, consistently driving balls back up the middle on a line. On the infield, his quick feet, soft hands, and strong arm will allow him to play up the middle long term. Goesen has flown under the radar but will now be a must follow as he heads into his senior year.

Owen Fernandes RHP / 1B / Maple Ridge Secondary, BC / 2024
Rankings StateRank: 1 / POS: 1
After a stand-out performance at the Canada Cup, Fernades continued to play well at the Western Canada ProCase. On the mound, he comfortably sat in the 83-84 mph range and mixed his secondary offerings well during the live-game action. His curveball and slider both profile differently and his short, quick arm creates deception out of the hand. Working down in the zone allows Fernandes to utilize his steep approach angle creating lots of ground balls and swing & miss. At the dish, he added a couple base hits showing his two-way potential. The Canadian Junior National Team member is getting hot at the right time and will look to continue doing so going forward.

Robert Scalzo RHP / Foothills Composite, BC / 2025
Rankings StateRank: 2 / POS: 1
Scalzo had one of the better pitching performances of the day at the ProCase. Heavy with the fastball early, sitting in the 86-88 mph range. Also used a very effective slider with late 2-plane break which generated plenty of in-zone and out-of-zone swing & miss. Out of a ¾ slot, his long arm in the back, but quick to his release point can create deception. The 2023 Future Gamer continues to trend upwards as we head toward the offseason.

Landon Kauffman OF / LHP / Okotoks Dawgs, BC / 2025Kauffman continues to have one of the better seasons from a 2025 on the west side of Canada. Coming off the 2023 Future Games and impressive showing at the Canada Cup for Team BC, he swung a hot bat at the ProCase. During his round of BP, he often worked in the air towards his backside gap showing off his power potential. During live-game action he had multiple hits, driving one to the wall in LCF. On the mound, Kauffman's low ¾ slot creates natural arm side run on his fastball, topping out at 84 mph. The slider has sharp horizontal break with some depth to it as well, a potential swing and miss offering as he continues to refine it. Kauffman is one of the top 2025 outfielders in the country.

Lukas Le Gras C / 3B / Lambrick Park, BC / 2025
Rankings StateRank: 4 / POS: 1
Le Gras jumped on to the scene at the 2023 Future Games, and continued to open some eyes at the 2023 Western Canada ProCase. In the box he has a balanced, controlled line drive approach and works gap-to-gap. As he continues to mature and add strength, he will become even more of a threat at the dish. Behind the dish, he is one of the most underrated catchers in the country. He has a strong, accurate arm and consistently POPs sub-2.00. Le Gras is a catcher to follow going forward.
