2019 Overall Rankings Update Release
July 19, 2018
The summer circuit is approaching its peak, and as the season ascends, the prospects in the 2019 class are also rising and beginning to separate themselves. Having left June behind, the page has turned on the 2018, and the countdown to next year’s MLB Draft has begun for these potential draftees.
In the months since the Prep Baseball Report last released its 2019 rankings, the company’s coverage area has expanded to include the talent-rich states of Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina. With the new additions, the PBR landscape now covers every state east of Colorado as the journey continues west to join the already-buzzing hotbeds of Arizona and California. The trio of Alabama-Georgia-South Carolina combine for an influx of more than sixty prospects to the new rankings. It is important to note that PBR overall rankings only include states that we intimately know from our boots-on-the-ground scouting staff.
SS Bobby Witt Jr. (Colleyville Heritage HS, TX) returns to the top spot in the rankings after a brief stint at number two in the last rendition. The Oklahoma recruit has consistently proven himself on a national stage, and combines five-tool abilities with a professional approach that vault him to the head of the class. With a strong chance to stick at shortstop moving forward, Witt will likely hear his name called early on the first day of the 2019 MLB Draft.
A pair of pitchers come in at numbers two and three. LHP/1B Hunter Barco (Bolles HS, FL), Florida recruit, is athletic enough to be a potential two-way player in college while featuring a low nineties fastball that whips out of a deceptive low ¾ slot making him the top pitcher in the class. RHP Daniel Espino (Georgia Premier Academy, GA), a Louisiana State recruit, enters the PBR rankings for the first time with his long, loose arm stroke and projectable 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame. He shows feel for three pitches including a fastball that is creeping into the upper nineties.
Rounding out the top five are OF Riley Greene (Hagerty HS, FL), a Florida recruit, and RHP Brennan Malone (IMG Academy, FL), a North Carolina recruit. Greene is one of, if not, the top hitters in the country while the physically impressive Malone possesses a quick arm that runs fastballs up to 94 mph.
