This week end Arkansas State University hosted a tournament between, the Memphis Tigers, St. Louis Gamers, Batter’s Box and the Arkansas Prospects. I caught both of the Prospects games on Saturday when they tied the St. Louis Gamers 5-5 and defeated the Memphis Tigers 15-6.
St. Louis Gamers 5 vs Arkansas Prospects 5
2016 RHP Angus Denton started on the mound for the Prospects. He worked four innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 6. He pounded the strike zone with his fastball of 80-83 mph with late sink. He complimented that with a sharp Frisbee breaking ball thrown at 70-73 mph.
Offensively the Prospects had a big third inning scoring 5 runs on 6 hits. 2017 OF Kinner Brasher got things going with a one out single, that was followed by 3 consecutive extra base hits, 2017 MIF Zac Freeman double, 2017 MIF Casey Martin double and 2017 CIF Paxton Wallace triple. Wallace scored when 2016 C Greyson Pinkett reached on an error and was driven by 2017 CIF Reed Sheppard to finish off the scoring.
Other than the big 3rd inning the Gamers keep the Prospects bats silent scattering 5 hits in the other 6 innings of the contest 2017 MIF Zac Freeman and 2017 MIF Casey Martin led the way both having a 2 for 4 day with an RBI and a run scored.
The Gamers rallied in the 5th scoring 3 to make the score 5-4 and pushed across the game tie run in the 6th. Both teams were held scoreless in the 7th leaving the game tied 5-5.
Memphis Tigers 6 vs Arkansas Prospects 15
The Arkansas Prospects banged their way to a victory in game two scoring 15 runs on 19 hits. Eight of the nine players recorded at least one hit, while 5 players had multi-hit games.
On the mound 2018 RHP Turner Sparks picked up the win pitching 4 innings allowing 4 runs off 6 hits while striking out 4 over 4 innings of work. 2017 RHP Noah Fowler pitched the final three innings of the contest competing in the strike zone at times with a fastball 82-84 mph with late arm-side run and a sharp 11/5 curveball thrown 73-75 mph.
Offensively the Prospects took advantage of everything they were given and then some. A consistent effort one through nine on the day.
