On August 29th, we hosted the Unsigned Senior Games at Hendrix College in Conway, AR. The day featured 41 participants from all over the state of Arkansas. The event included a pro-style work out and a nine inning game. The game featured 5 left-handed pitchers below is our evaluations of all of them.
Adam Brown, LHP, Harrison HS
Brown is a 6-foot-5 210-pound left-hander with a large frame and an average build. He works from a H ¾ arm slot with a clean arm action. His mechanics are repeatable with a tall and fall balance point and limited extension. He pounded the strike zone with three pitches. His fastball set 77-80 mph up 81 mph. His curveball was 65-57 mph with some depth thrown with near fastball arm speed. He located a change up at 67-70 mph with slight arm-side run. He did slow his arm down to locate the change up. Overall, Brown projects to get better as he continues to grow into his large frame. The fact that he can throw strikes consistently makes him intriguing as he gains velocity.
Austin Cross, LHP, Ashdown HS
Cross is a 5-foot-11 160-pound left-hander with a medium frame and an athletic build. He commanded the strike zone with his fastball 80-83 mph up to 84. He complimented that with a 1/7 curveball thrown 68-71 mph with near fastball arm speed. His mechanics are repeatable and maintains consistent rhythm through-out his delivery. He works from a drop and drive balance point and gets little extension. Overall Cross is a quality left-hander with some upside as he gain physical strength.
Kyle Lightsey, LHP, Lakeside HS
Lightsey is a 6-foot-1 210-pound left-hander with a large frame and an average build. He had success during the scrimmage portion of the day pitching off his 12/6 curveball with late break. He complimented his curveball with a fastball 75-78 mph touching 80 mph. Mechanically he does a sound job of repeating his mechanics. He would have more velocity if he would incorporate his lower half with more aggression. Overall Lightsey has advanced pitch-ability and a weapon to get hitters out with his breaking ball. He should be able to be used a reliever at the collegiate level.
Jake Pinson, LHP, Central HS
Pinson is a 5-foot-9 150-pound left-hander with a slight frame and athletic build. He competed with a fastball of 72-75 mph and complimented that with a curveball of 63-65 mph. Mechanically he works from an over the top arm slot with an arm wrap in the back side. He uses a tall and fall balance point, from there he has a head jerk that pulls him offline to the third base side. If he can make some mechanically fixes I believe he will throw strikes on a more consistent basis.
Gunnar Williams, LHP, Lake Hamilton HS
Williams is a5-foot-10 160-pound left-hander with a medium frame and an athletic build. He works from a H ¾ arm slot with an average arm. His fastball was thrown for strikes at 75-78 mph with slight arm side run. He complimented that with 2/8 breaking ball with gradual break thrown at 61-64 mph with near fastball arm speed. He did a good job of repeating his mechanics. He would benefit from getting more extension and driving toward home plate with his backside. Overall Williams is a quality left-hander that throws strikes.
