Unsigned Senior Games: Catchers

On Saturday the Unsigned Senior Games were hosted at Hendrix College. There were 6 players competed as catchers. Below is my scouting report on each of the players.

Erick Aguirre, C, Lakeside HS
Aguire is a 5-foot-11 165-pound catcher with a medium frame and an athletic build. He receives the baseball with proper arm angles. He receives from a wide stance. He throws pop times between 2.00-2.18. He has an elongated exchange. Offensively he starts from a tall stance with a minimum load. He attacks the baseball with average bat speed producing exit velocities up to 75 mph. He maintains balance through extension. Overall Aguirre is a solid catcher with an accurate arm.

Lane Herndon, C, Greenbrier HS
Herndon is a 5-foot-11 175-pound catcher with a medium frame and an average build. Offensively he starts from a crouched stance, he has a fluid but small load, he has average bat speed with a slight uphill swing. He seems to have a feel for the barrel, as he squares balls up on a consistent basis. Defensively he shows good effort in blocking and is a sound receiver. He throws 2.06-2.23 pop times. He has a quick exchange and a short arm action. He would benefit from staying in his legs longer and longer arm action when throwing from behind the plate. Overall Herndon is a solid high school catcher, with a motor. Adding strength would improve his game.

Dylan Hurt, C, Bryant HS
Hurt is a 5-foot-10 160-pound catcher with a medium frame and an athletic build. Defensively he is very solid behind the plate. He has solid lateral movement while blocking and maintains proper arm angles while receiving. He throws pop times consistently below 2.0 and as low as 1.87. He does this with a quick exchange and an accurate arm. Offensively he starts with an athletic stance, with a smooth load and attacks the baseball with average bat speed. He has a line drive swing that keeps the barrel in the hit zone for a consistent basis, which allows him to hit the ball to all fields. Overall Hurt is an above average defender with an adequate offensive game. He is a versatile athlete that can play multiple position if needed.

Caleb Regan, C, Farmington HS
Regan is a 5-foot-10 175-pound catcher with a medium frame and an athletic build. One the more offensive catchers in the event. Regan produced exit velocities up to 86 mph with a line drive swing with fast bat speed. He would benefit by incorporating his lower half with more aggression. Defensively he shows effort and aptitude while blocking. He threw pop times of 1.97-2.11 with an elongated exchange and an accurate arm. He has the arm strength to throw under a 2.00 on a consistent basis. Overall Reagan is a solid catcher with fast bat speed, as he develops physically he should be a sound collegiate catcher.

Jake Sas, C, Avon HS IN
Sas is a 5-foot-7 160-pound catcher with a medium frame and an athletic build. He threw pop times between 2.21-2.34. During the offensive portion of the day he produced exit velocities up to 80 mph. He would benefit from keeping his lower half online during his swing. Defensively he showed great effort while blocking. He ran a 7.15 in the 60. Overall Sas played the game with great energy, his biggest area he needs to improve is overall physical strength.

Dakotah Stafford, C Central HS
Stafford is a 5-foot-11 170-pound catcher with a medium frame and an athletic build. He is one of the better defensive catchers in the state and he displayed that Saturday. He receives quietly maintain proper glove angles. He has a sound work ethic in terms of blocking on a consistent basis. He threw pop times between 1.85-1.97 with a strong accurate arm. Offensively he starts from an athletic stance with a slight load. He attacks the baseball with average bat speed and a line drive swing. He would benefit from a hand load and becoming more aggressive with his lower half. Overall Stafford is an upper level defender with a raw offensive game with structure to become adequate at the collegiate level.
