Recruiting Q&A: Tyler Moreland

2017 RHP/OF Tyler Moreland from Genoa Central High School committed to Arkansas State University. Moreland is a physical player, with a bevy of tools. Moreland is a 6-foot-4 190 outfielder with a physical build. He runs a 6.6 in the 60. He shows the ability to run his fastball up to 88 mph and a feel for the breaking ball. Tyler was nice enough to answer some questions over his recruitment to Arkansas State.
PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose the School of your choice?
Tyler Moreland: I was impressed with the campus, and the coaching staff. It seemed like a perfect fit for me, and their PT program fits what I want to get a degree in.
PBR: Where did they first see you compete?
Tyler Moreland: They first saw me pitch at the 2015 PBR All-State Games at UALR. They kept in touch with my high school coaches, Coach Brewster and Coach Cox, throughout the year about me. Then they came and saw me several times in the summer playing with the Sticks, and at Xtra Innings.
PBR: When did you take your first official or unofficial visit school committed to?
Tyler Moreland: I took my official visit September 24th during the football game against UCA. I took an unofficial when my summer team played there this summer and got to see the indoor and the locker room.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Tyler Moreland: They are expecting me to compete for a spot in either the outfield or at first base. I will also have a chance to compete on the mound as a two way player.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Tyler Moreland: Abilene Christian, UCA, OBU, and Seminole were all in contact with me or my coaches this past summer. I fell in love with Arkansas State from the start. They were my number one school.
PBR: Who did you play for this summer? Talk about your experience playing for them?
Tyler Moreland: I played for the Extra Innings Sticks this past summer for Coach Brewster. I had a great time playing with them. We all got a long perfect, and when we started playing together as a team no one could touch us.
PBR: Have you ever attended a PBR Arkansas event? Talk about your experience playing in PBR events.
Tyler Moreland: I attended the All State Games at UALR in 2015 and the Top Prospect Games in Springdale in 2016. Coach Bottoms did an excellent job preparing the event by making it a perfect opportunity for players to get seen by colleges. That’s when I first started receiving phone calls from schools are attending those two events.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Tyler Moreland: My father, Owen Moreland, use to be a minor league pitcher from the New York Mets organization. His career was cut short after tearing his rotator cuff. Even after multiple surgeries he would still throw with me in the backyard. It just showed me to keep my body healthy and never give up.
PBR: What were your stats for your High School last spring?
Tyler Moreland: On the mound I was 3-2 with a 0.33 ERA in 43 innings with 50 K’s. I believe that my ERA was the lowest in the state. I hit .479 with 4 HRs, 3 triples, and 11 doubles. I scored 28 runs, had 19 RBIs, and 17 stolen bases. I made the all-conference and all-state team.
