Arkansas Scouting Director
2016 RHP Alex Shurtleff from Bryant High school committed to Harding University this week. I was able to talk to Alex about the recruiting process.
PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose the Harding University?
Alex: Harding will give me the opportunity to continue both my baseball career along with the major I want to pursue, so it was a great fit for everything I want to accomplish moving forward.
PBR: Where did they first see you compete?
Alex: I believe it was a PBR event at UALR last January, and then they were also able to see me compete at several games this summer.
PBR: When did you take your first official or unofficial visit Harding University?
Alex: August 1st, I was able to tour the school along with the baseball facilities and was able to sit down with the coach and get all my questions answered.
PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?
Alex: Harding will be losing many senior pitchers after the 2015-2016 year, so as a freshman I should be able to come in and help fill those gaps immediately.
PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Alex: Several within the state
PBR: Who did you play for this summer? Talk about your experience playing for them?
Alex: Bryant Blacksox Legion Team, this is my second year on the team as a pitcher I feel I contribute quality innings and the road trips with the team are always a great time, but we all like to compete and win as much as we can. We had a good season, won State and finished third in Regionals.
PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Alex: So many people have been part of this experience, my parents, coaches, I would say my older brother really has had a huge impact on me as we both share the passion for the game and I am able to have a catcher anytime I need to work on a pitch or just to throw the ball around.
PBR: What were your stats for your High School last spring?
Alex: 32.1 ip 6-0 (1 save) .65 era
