North Alabama Prospect Games: Quick Hits
November 12, 2018
On Sunday, November 11, 2018 the North Alabama Prospect Games took place at the University of Alabama- Huntsville on a chilly day. The players went through a morning workout followed by a game. There were several players that were very impressive on the field. Over the next few days we will continue to cover the event and publish additional information and stats from the day, as there were several other impressive performances. For today, let’s take a quick look at just a few of the standouts:
Hall Billings (2019, SS/RHP, The Donoho School) Had a very productive day all of the way around. An athletic MIF that has good speed and is also a legit RHP on the mound (but didn’t throw at the event). Plus defender at SS with nice instincts and had a very loud BP round and followed that up in the game with missiles in both AB’s.
Noah Watkins (2020, OF/LHP, Lee) Nice, athletic OF that has plenty of arm strength and defensive instincts that showed a well connected swing from the left side and a middle of the field approach. Was also very clean in his inning of work on the mound up to 79 mph with the FB and a well shaped breaking ball. A throwback type of player.
Brandon Bentley (2021, RHP/OF, Westminster Christian Academy) Showed a live, loose arm from the right side that was up to 85 mph as he showed the ability to locate all 3 of his pitches (CB, CH). His breaking ball had real tight spin. A 2021 that really impressed on the mound.
Carson Villalta (2020, SS/3B, Brooks) Big time feel for the game. Did just about everything equally well. Was slick in the dirt with nice arm strength (79 mph IF velo) and the glove works. Really keeps his hands and barrel inside the ball with a middle of the field approach but showed plenty of quickness with the hands to get to balls on the inner half. Aggressive player.
Andrew Burns (2022, 3B/SS, Boaz) Young player that really made loud contact during his BP round and is solid with the glove with plenty of arm strength across the diamond. Strong player that hit the ball to all fields with juice. Has some baseball savvy. Recent University of Alabama commit and Top 100 national player in our initial 2022 rankings.
Lawson Russell (2020, LHP/1B, Decatur) Tall LHP that really creates some plane and was able to really locate all of his pitches. Able to throw both of his offspeed pitches with the same arm speed and arm slot which created problems for hitters. The breaking ball shows big time depth and the changeup really tumbles away from RH hitters. Fastball with ASR up to 82 mph.
Lance Clardy (2019, OF/LHP, Buckhorn) A solid player that has plus defensive actions in the OF and plenty of arm strength with very accurate throws. Showed some juice in his BP round to the pull side and was also good on the mound with a FB up to 83 with cut at times. His breaking ball showed flashes of being a plus pitch.
