The 2016 Knights Baseball PBR Day took place on Sunday, September 25 at Dave Hall Field on the campus of Columbia State Community College and included a position player workout, followed by bullpens for the pitchers. Players were afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities to the PBR Tennessee staff and college coaches in attendance. The following is our evaluation of every position player from the 2019 graduating class that participated in the action.

 

Outfielders

Garrett Schultz, RHP/OF, Ensworth, 2019
60 Time: 7.31, Position Velocity:  OF-88, Exit Velocity: 87
6-foot-0, 160-pound, RHH hit from an even and narrower stance than we’ve seen from him in previous events, uses a long stride and a slight but smooth push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half is initialized by that long stride and fires his backside through well, sometimes over-rotates, hands get back and are able to comes through on a fairly flat plane, had a really good round of BP with a display of some power toward the left-center gap.  Defensively, plays through the ball aggressively and confidently in the outfield, clean and athletic exchange leads to a loose and quick arm action through a high ¾ to over-the-top slot, impressive arm strength with good life.

 Jake Templin, RHP/OF, FRA, 2019
60 Time: 7.64, Position Velocity:  OF-79, Exit Velocity: 77
5-foot-8, 165-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and slightly closed stance with his hands out in front of his body to start, uses a toe-tap and stride with a push back and slight lowering of his hands to get loaded, lower half works and gets his backside through, bat path is flat through the zone as his uses his backside well to get on plane and stay there, seemed to be at his strongest when hitting the ball toward right-center.  Defensively, showed above average hands and average footwork in the outfield, played through the ball well, uses an extra step or two in his exchange but uses a clean arm action through a high ¾ slot.

First Basemen

Alex Hall, LHP/1B, Buckhorn (AL), 2019
60 Time: 8.20, Position Velocity:  IF-68, Exit Velocity: 74
6-foot-1, 170-pound, LHH hits from a wide and even stance with some crouch and a high initial hand positioning, uses a very short stride with a lowering of his hands to get loaded, lower half works and gives a good base with its width but doesn’t quite fire through like it could, hands stay loose and fall into a good slot that promotes an uphill bat path through the zone, hit some ground balls to the right side in BP but is best when he stays middle.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork around the bag, could play through it more aggressively, uses an extra step in his exchange, longer arm action comes through a high ¾ slot.

Middle Infielders

Daniel Lucas, SS, Friendship Christian, 2019
60 Time: 7.14, Position Velocity:  IF-73, Exit Velocity: 75
5-foot-10, 170-pound, RHH hits from a balanced and even stance with some higher hand positioning and upright posture, uses a mild leg kick and a long stride with not much more than a slight barrel tilt to get loaded, lower half works but doesn’t quite get all the way through to create the separation he’s capable of, finishes a little closed, bat path comes into the zone somewhat steeply but flattens out through the ball, had a good round with consistent line drives to left-center.  Defensively, showed good hands and footwork in the infield, played through the ball pretty well and used a clean and quick exchange to lead to a short arm action through a ¾ slot.  

Carson Caudill, RHP/SS, Clarksville Academy, 2019
60 Time: 7.65, Position Velocity:  IF-71, Exit Velocity: 80
5-foot-8, 150-pound, LHH hits from a tall and open stance with some upright posture to begin, uses a leg kick and long stride with a smooth movement back with his hands to get loaded, lower half is activated with that leg lift and fires well to clear his hips, attacks the ball, swing plane begins from a steeper angle but flattens out near contact with some lift at the end, showed ability to square the ball up consistently, added strength would help.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork in the infield, could play through the ball more aggressively, uses an extra step in his higher exchange, shorter arm action through a high ¾ slot. 

Catchers

Brennan Dubose, C, Martin Luther King HS, 2019
60 Time: 7.46, Pop Time: 1.99-2.04, Position Velocity:  C-66, Exit Velocity: 85
5-foot-10, 150-pound, RHH hits from a more narrow and slightly open stance with very relaxed hands, uses a subtle leg kick with a long stride and a smooth lowering and push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half is quite active and fires and clears his hips very well, hands drop into a good slot and uses his backside very well, swing plane comes through the zone with an uphill path that gets through the ball, finished a little off balanced at times but squared some balls up very well, showed gap-to-gap potential.  Defensively, showed good hands and quick footwork behind the plate, short and high exchange led to a short and quick arm action through an over the top slot, throws were all around the bag, arm strength should improve over time.

Garrett Warden, C, Lincoln County, 2019
60 Time: 8.32, Pop Time: 2.04-2.14, Position Velocity:  C-70, Exit Velocity: 82
5-foot-11, 180-pound, RHH hits from a wide and even stance, uses a short stride with a subtle crouch and a push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half is strong and generally stable as he gets good separation and drive, bat path comes through the zone flat to slightly uphill with the ability to stay through the ball, seemed to be best at the plate when staying up the middle.  Defensively, showed average hands and good footwork behind the plate, an efficient exchange led to a short arm action through an over-the-top slot and a quick release, throws were accurate.
