Friend is a Davidson commit and is 6-1 with a lankier athletic frame that has projection left to it. Behind the plate, good receiver, works up under the ball and was able to steal some strikes. Quick release with accuracy and arm strength, had a runner hosed by a few steps on the only steal attempt, ump claim tag was never applied, I will withhold comment on the call. At the plate, hits from the left side, has pop. Had one hit in the game, an infield single in the first that drove in the first run of the game, it was a deep count and he did a good job of staying on a fastball that was a borderline strike, put in play up the middle and used his speed to beat it out. He moves very well for a catcher and could player other spots in the future.
VA/DC State Games
Friend is 6-1 with a lanky athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a slightly leaned back taller athletic stance, low leg kick stride on line, short smooth load back to a slight wrap. Hips rotate completely with some violence and he maintains good lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, slightly uphill swing with strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a pull preference with easy gap power that way and ability to work gap to gap, potential to grow into more power, exit velocity was 93. Behind the plate, quick clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short quick arm action, position velocity was 78 and pop times 1.94-2.02. Ran a 7.00 60 yard dash.
Preseason All-State II
Friend is 6-0 with a lankier athletic frame that has some projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a leaned back upright stance, low leg kick stride on line, quiet smooth load back. Hips rotate completely with some violence, maintains some lower half balance, hands are inside and short and quick to the ball, uphill swing path with some strength at contact and extension through the ball, line drive swing that will generate carry in the gaps, exit velocity was 87. Behind the plate, quick hands receiving. Quick exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, velocity was 78 and pops were 1.94-2.02 and showed accuracy on his throws. Ran a 4.05 home to first.
