Hughes is 6-2 with a lanky athletic frame that has a lot of projection left to it. Throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short loose arm action and normal effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are uphill and closed, lands closed with a fall off finish, hides the ball. Fastball was 79-82, touching 83,, pitch has downward plane and boring action to armside. Breaking ball was 66-69 with good armspeed and sharp 11/5 break to it. Face four hitters, one bunted and he struck out the other three. Fastball generated a handful of swing and misses in a short outing. Lot of velocity upside.
VA/DC Last Chance Open
Hughes is 6-2 with a lanky frame that has a lot of projection left to it. He hits from the right side from an open balanced athletic stance, strides on line, short load back. Hips rotate completely and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short to the ball, slightly uphill swing path with extension through the ball, showed a pull approach with the ability to use the whole field, exit velocity was 84. In the outfield, gets body behind the ball and fields through it with average hands, clean exchange, throws from a lower three-quarters arm slot, long arm action, position velocity was 82. On the mound, he throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, long loose quick arm action and some effort to his delivery. Drop and drive delivery, shoulders are level and closed, lands closed with a fall off finish and some recoil. Fastball was 77-80, with heavy boring action to armside. Slider was 65-69 with good armspeed and gradual 11/5 break to it, has some shape and a chance to be good as it tightens.
