Solid frame that has continued to clean up and add strength. At the plate Hughes has an early load back, bat wraps slightly on load, and barrel has length through the zone. Because the barrel stays on through contact and gets long out front there is some adjustability in the swing, which was on display later in the game. In that at bat Hughes was out front a bit but the barrel was still in the hitting zone and he is strong enough to muscle some mishit balls through the infield. In his second at bat of the game he turned on a fastball early in the count and drove it through the right side. Defensively Hughes is an average receiver with average blocking skills. The arm strength will need to increase in order to stay behind the plate long term, but regardless offers plenty of offensive upside from the left side of the plate.

Hughes is 5-11 with an athletic frame that has some strength present and some projection left to it. He hits from the left side from a slightly open leaned back athletic stance, strides on line, smooth load back, some rhythm present. Hips rotate completely with violence and he maintains some lower half balance. Hands stay inside, short and quick to the ball, uphill swing with strength at contact and extension through the ball, showed a the ability to use the whole field, some power present to all fields with natural loft in his swing, exit velocity was 92. Behind the plate, clean exchange, throws from a high three-quarters arm slot, short arm action, position velocity was 73 and pop times 2.08-2.16. Showed some accuracy on his throws. Ran a 7.53 60 yard dash.
