Is a kid who doesn’t get enough love, and it’s probably because he’s 5-4, 145 pounds. He doesn’t draw your attention off the bus, or even when he’s warming up. But if we had to urge something to colleges it’s this - the kid can flat out play. Defensively he’s the shortstop on a strong team, he’s got quick feet, hands work and his arm plays on the left side of the diamond. Then he flipped to catcher, where he received extremely well, showed flexibility, and showed twitch and arm strength again. Offensively, he’s a switch-hitting leadoff man-type player, he takes aggressive hacks, he works counts, drag bunts, shoots the gaps and finds ways to get on. All in all, Kerlin is easily one of the most underrated players in the tournament, but if you afford yourself the opportunity to watch him, you’ll likely find your diamond in the rough.
At 5-foot-4, 145 pounds, uncommitted 2020 MIF Kyler Kerlin (Elite Squad Texas / Hutto HS, TX) may be smaller in stature, but he is an impact player on the field. The left-handed hitter plays the game fast and hard and is a difference-maker on both sides of the ball. Offensively, he has a compact, balanced approach with loose athletic hands. In his first at-bat, he roped a triple to the right-center gap, and he later singled up the middle to drive in a run, and walked. Defensively, he ranges well to both sides, has soft, athletic hands and showed plenty of arm across the diamond. In short, he’s a baller.
