Physical: Durable, highly-efficient 6-foot-1, 205lb build with competitive fire on the bump.
Pitching: RHP - Fast moving delivery with timed up parts, utilizing drop/drive and a quick H ¾ slot to create sink on the ball into the zone. Sat 90-91 mph with heavy action at 2247 rpms and mixed a sharp 74-75 mph CB that flashed two-plane shape. Able to create tilt on an upper 70’s SL, too that gives him another weapon in his back pocket. An 83-84 mph CH keeps improving, fading hard to the arm-side to round out the arsenal. Strike-thrower, sequences pitches in-game action, dynamite when his back is against the wall.
6/13/21
Physical: Strong, powerful 6-foot-1, 205lb frame with two-way abilities, though he projects best on the bump; Stony Brook commit. 7.16 runner in the 60-yard dash.
Offensively: RHH - Balanced, even stance with the barrel waving low at the shoulder; utilized a leg lift stride getting to a stretched launch position before driving through a flat, slightly uphill path into the hitting zone with natural lift at impact. Connected approach with plenty of ground power, emphasized by a 99 mph bat-exit velocity via Trackman Baseball and 381 foot peak batted ball distance. Easy middle of the order consideration holding 74 mph average bat speed per Blast Motion. Found consistent success on a line through the LCF gap (63% line drive rate) and stayed behind the baseball during the swing.
Defensively: The third baseman featured above-average footwork playing down with the chest; sub 4.20 second feet and a loud 91 mph arm across the diamond from a power high ¾ slot. Consistently setting himself up for good hops and range to the glove hand side, accurate/soft actions with funnel into the chest.
Pitching: RHP - Starts off the far left side of the rubber; quick pace and short side rocker into a gradual leg lift to a medium position before racing down the mound with intent. Strong lower half maintained control on the deceleration side, commanding impressive backdoor two-seamers on the outside corner to RHH (88-90 mph, 13 inches average HM) for K’s, going to a sharp 72-74 mph SL showing plus at times up to around 23 inches max across the plate. Easy one-two punch offering high strikeout rates and whiffs in the box. Gets the ball and goes with a “bulldog” mentality.
8/02/20
Physical: Durable / strong 6-foot , 200-pound frame with advanced physicality throughout the lower half, increased mound presence on the bump. Stony Brook commit.
Pitching: RHP - Quick rocker step with moderate pace throughout the delivery, medium leg lift at waist height, with good lower half drive out of the stack, powerful sit into a bent backside and gets good spring and extension towards the plate while racing down the mound, high ¾ slot with quickness out of a medium arm circle. FB ranged from 85-87 T88 mph with heaviness into the zone and high level command on all sides of the plate; upwards of 2358 spin per Trackman Baseball. Mixed in a sharp 67-69 mph breaker with 11/5 shape and late depth creating swing and miss opportunities at the plate. Countered with a solid 69-70 mph CH with slight arm-side fade on occasion and dropped in a differently shaped 70-72 mph SL that held better horizontal plane.
6/15/20
Physical: Stocky, physical 6-foot, 200-pound frame with noticeable athleticism and raw power in the delivery. 7.57 60-yard dash.
Offensively: RHH. Balanced, even stance with ability to use legitimate ground power in the swing. Hands start at the shoulder and move slightly backwards upon load coupled with a leg-lift stride for a timing mechanism. The swing is short and direct to the ball, creating natural lift to left field. Peppered the LF/LCF fence with regularity generating above average hip/shoulder separation in the box, consistent barrels, 97 MPH bat-exit velocity during batting practice per Trackman.
Defensively: The third baseman plays low to the ground, helping to cover both sides laterally. Glove hand works softly through the baseball while fielding out in front creating downhill momentum on the catch, can get rid of the ball in a hurry if need be. Makes the play on the run with relative ease and can throw from multiple arm angles. IF - 85 mph.
Pitching: RHP utilized an easy, repeatable tempo on the mound with advanced lower half strength yielding an overall impressive performance both from the raw measurables and in-game dominance. The righty sat 84-88 mph with downhill command on the FB, worked off of it with a tight 65-69 mph CB demonstrating 11/5 shape and featuring swing and miss capabilities.
2/22/20
Showcased an advanced physical 5-foot-11, 195-pound frame with strength and raw power in his actions. The primary right-handed pitcher featured one of the best pens of the day while sitting 83-86 mph out of a slow tempoed setup with violent hip drive from hand-separation yielding a quick, high ¾ arm-slot at release point. Fastball showed late life up in the zone with occasional ride. Mixed in a 67-68 mph curveball that at times was thrown from a ¾ arm-slot flashing 11/5 action across the zone. Featured a 70-71 mph changeup that demonstrated occasional fade down in the zone. The right-handed hitter begins with a balanced, even stance utilizing a leg-hang to initiate his swing. Generated a slightly uphill barrel path into the hitting zone with pull side lift out in front of the plate. Displayed advanced strength in the lower half creating barrel whip and an 89 mph bat-exit velocity during batting practice. Ran a 7.31 60-yard dash.
6/20/19
5-foot-11, 195-pound primary pitchers sat 84-85 out of a high 3/4 arm slot. Repeats well and utilizes his lower half extremely well to create late life to his fastball. Showed above average feel for a curveball at 62-66 with tight 11/5 rotation. Changeup at 69-70 with similar arm speed gives Smink three above average pitches to work with at an early age. A strong, projectable frame should allow Smink to add significant velocity in the coming years.
4/18/19
5-foot-11, 175-pound freshman sat 84-86 early and settled in at 83-85 over five solid innings, allowing two runs. Works out of a high 3/4 arm slot with repeatable mechanics and showed a feel for four pitches. Kept an extremely deep Malvern Prep offense off balance most of the night. A slide with some tilt at 72-74 and a changeup with good sell at 73-74 were effective secondary offerings. A curveball at 64-66 with 11/5 rotation is a pitch still in development.
