4/20/19: RHP, showed a four-pitch mix with an 88-90 fastball, slider, loopy curveball and low-80s changeup. He went five innings, allowing a run on two hits and four walks while striking out six. He also helped himself at the plate, hitting in the four hole and going 3-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.  

11/4/18: Strong XL frame with athletic fit build. RHP/INF started first game as a hitter and then started second game on the mound. Wide balanced stance with high hands and high back elbow. Swings in rhythm showing plate coverage with easy pull side power. The ball came off his bat hard and loud during BP regularly peppering the gaps and deep over fence. In game had a chopper single (4.75 on turn) showing athleticism when opening hips to make inside turn after seeing ball get through. On the mound stands tall, hands at his waist that lift with his knee showing strong posture. Hands drop getting late whippy arm through mid- with long extension over a stiff front leg. Fastball 89-91 mph, late life up looking harder than gun to hitters and getting Ks or soft contact. Above-average curveball at 74-75 mph with 11/5 shape showing sharp, overhand spin down into and through the zone. K pitch with feel to bury into the dirt; ability to throw 1st pitch catching hitter off guard. Average changeup at 81-83 mph, used with feel to arm side showing short sink off FB release. Ability to go back to back and used 1st pitch as more set up pitch. When command is at its best all pitches play up with ability to keep hitters guessing. Attacked zone in outing using all three pitches, changing sequences and using multiple pitches for punch outs. (Ozella)

8/15/18: Tall, slender bodied righty at six-foot-six, 215 pounds. High three-quarter slot with fair arm speed and some down angle to the plate. Fastball topped at 93, pitched at mostly 88-89 mph. Two below average breaking balls; 82-84 mph slider and 73-74 mph curveball. Straight change at 82-83 mph was best off speed pitch on this look. Overall, Matthiessen throws strikes and pitches to contact, but lacks a go-to out pitch. (Seifert)
