The crafty southpaw was relatively unknown coming into the 2019 season but quickly made his presence felt with a dominant junior season. The Washington commit pitches with his FB in the 84-86 range. While not overpowering, the velocity plays up due to his ability to locate in all quadrants of the zone with a high spin rate. The CB has sharp bend and depth at 69-72. CH is especially tough on RHH and shows late fade at 72-74. With his size and lean frame, expect MacLean to add some bulk to his build and will likely come out flashing more velocity as a senior.
Working from a high ¾ release with a fluid, repeatable delivery, MacLean filled up the zone with all 3 of his offerings. The FB held 83-85 throughout the entire game and he showed an ability to work it to both sides of the plate. It’s a relatively straight offering but he generates steep downward angle with his release. The CB his tight, 2/7 shape at 69-71 and routinely finds the bottom of the zone. He didn’t need to go to his CH often, but when he did it showed late arm-side fade at 73-74. Overall, MacLean has command of an advanced arsenal with a frame/build that still has projection left.
Uncommitted and young for the class, MacLean has pitched his way into becoming one of the state’s top arms, and has continued to produce each outing for Central Catholic. Long-limbed and lean with a 6-foot-2, 170-pound frame, the highly-projectable left-hander has a compact, athletic delivery that allows him to find a consistent, high ¾ slot after a medium-sized, continuous arm swing. He exhibited minimal effort in delivering fastballs at 83-85 for much of the outing with a stiff win against his face. The ball jumps out of the hand at times as he showcases control of the fastball to both sides of the plate. Given the minimal effort that he throws with and that the frame is likely to fill out considerably in the future, there could be a velocity jump on the way soon. Poised throughout the outing, MacLean relied heavily on his fastball though he also flashed feel for a faded changeup in the low 70s along with an upper 60s breaking ball that crept into the low 70s at times, and shows signs of progressing into a solid pitch in the future. MacLean finished the game with 10 strikeouts and just one walk, surrendering four hits and an unearned run while throwing 68 percent strikes.
