A simple calculation that divides the athlete’s Exit Velocity Max by the athlete’s 60 Yard Dash time for the given event year. For example, 98 MPH / 7.00s = 14.00.
5-foot-10, 155-pounds with a lean frame. Stays behind the ball and gets his body through his throws, 80 mph arm strength and shows carry to the bag from a high 3/4 slot. In the box, relaxed approach, slightly open stance. Hands drop on the pitch, direct path, level path, 80 mph exit velo.
Athletic body frame. Smooth tempo with good body control and balance. Loose feel with some arm extension. Ball comes out at a high 3/4 arm slot. Works well down the mound and has positive upside with further arm strength.
Preseason-Downstate (February 21, 2018)
Castillo has a lean/wiry body type at 5-foot-10, 155-pounds. He ran a 7.09 – 60 & 4.58 home to 1B. Offensively - He begins with his hands slightly away from his ear; hands are quick to the zone and gets the barrel to the ball. He has a slight open stance to start, high leg kick for timing while keeping his head still. Strong rotation of the hips, good extension and finish. Exit velocity was 80 MPH off the tee. Defensively - Quick feet and athletic to the ball. He keeps his throws down and on a line with adequate arm strength at 84 MPH. Pitching - Castillo starts off on the first base side of the rubber and has a smooth, controlled rock back to start the delivery. He has a short and compact reach back and stays on top of the ball; lower half stays balanced and closed with a slight open when landing. He has the same fluid, repeatable motion for the curveball, change up and fastball. He tops out at 81 MPH while sitting 78-79 MPH. He throws a tight spin curve ball with late 12-6 action that averages at 70-71 MPH.
Last Chance-Downstate (November 18, 2017)
Castillo stands in at 5-foot-8, 150-pounds with a lean athletic frame. Ran a 7.09 – 60. Offensively- Righty sets up square to the pitcher in a balanced stance with little movement. Efficient trigger getting hands and lower body set prior to the pitch. Quick hands to the ball with an upward lift barrel action making consistent contact up the middle. Clean, fluid swing that will improve with added strength. Recorded an exit velocity of 74 MPH. Defensively- Shows good footwork and approach to the baseball. Smooth transition from glove hand to the throwing position. Could gain more ground on the throw to get body weight moving towards intended target. Recorded a positional arm velocity of 83 MPH. Pitching- Right gets set in the middle of the rubber using slow tempo movement. Gets into a good position to throw at separation and drives down the mound keeping the front side closed off with a good follow through. High ¾ arm slot that is consistent hitting spots in the strike zone. Fastball was 80-81 MPH and peaked at 81 MPH showing good arm side run. Curveball was 71-72 MPH with a sharp 12/6 break. Change up was 75-76 MPH with little arm side sink. Will need to develop a great velocity difference off the fastball. Overall a talented 2020 graduate to keep an eye on at future events.
