Last Chance Preview-Downstate (November 18, 2017)
Ortiz is a 5-foot-10, 160 pound SS/2B with an athletic build. He ran a 6.95 60. Offensively - Right handed hitter with an exit velo of 77 MPH. Slightly open stance with minimal leg kick. Showed the ability to hit to all fields with a consistent short swing, while using his lower half. Balanced approach start to finish. Defensively - Excellent footwork and angled attack. Hands and body flow through the ball. Was able to throw through a variety of arm angles, with an infield velocity of 79 MPH. Should be able to handle both MIF positions as he fills out his frame.
NY Games (June 25-27, 2017)
Slender 5-foot-10, 150-pound MIF, ran a 7.51/60. Offensively - out of a nearly upright stance, keeps hands inside ball and bat on level path through the strike zone, full extension with an exit velocity of 77 MPH; repeatable motion, counter rotation between upper and lower body will add to power. Defensively - clean footwork, sure hands, smooth transfer, accurate arm at 79 MPH.
Winter Open (February 26, 2017)
Ortiz now stands 5-foot-10 150 pounds with quick, fast twitch actions. He ran an improved 7.28 60 and an impressive 4.00 home-to-1B. Offensively- Even stance; weight slightly towards the back leg with bat resting on his shoulder. Slight wrap of the hands for a load; short stride while staying back. Aggressive lower half while staying level in the zone to and through the ball. Line drive results through the middle of the field. Exit velocity improved 3 MPH to 78 MPH. Defensively- Upright setup; stays on the balls of his feet. Quick stop and go actions, can cover ground laterally and towards the plate. Hands are soft and out in front; transfer is up high similar to a catcher and occasionally uses a second shuffle step before releasing. Accurate arm that showed a huge bump up to 78 MPH across the diamond. True middle infield actions with some offensive capabilities.
Downstate Fall Preview (October 2, 2016)
Ortiz,a 2020 slick fielding right-handed hitting shortstop stands at 5-foot-9 and weighs a firm 140 pounds, he ran a 7.4 60. Offensively- Begins with an open stance with a slight crouch and weight shifted slightly to the back leg. Hands are above the back shoulder with the barrel more than a 45 degree angle from the ground. Uses a front leg lift to create separation during the launch phase of the swing. Keeps the hands behind the rotation during the path to the ball. Gets full use of the body, showing ability to drive the ball from the pull side line to center field. Recorded an exit velocity of 75 MPH, which will surely go up as this 2020 grad physically gains strength over the next few years. Defensively- Fluid athletic movements to the ball. Uses short choppy steps to create a good hop while moving the thru the ball. Throws showed carry and accuracy across the diamond. Gets a bit long with the arm action. Transfer could also improve, but should good athleticism and arms strength. Recorded an arm velocity of 70 MPH from the shortstop position.
