Campus Series-Marist (July 25, 2017)
Coates checks in at 6-foot-1, 185-pounds with a lean athletic frame. Pitching- Lefty sets up in the middle of the rubber with a simple side step into a high leg kick above the hip crease. Breaks down well from his power position with good separation showing a loose arm swing and being in a good throwing position on front foot strike. Shows a good follow through and repeats mechanics on different pitches keeping his delivery simple and effective. Has a mid-¾ arm slot that creates good run on this fastball. Fastball was recorded at its peak of 81 MPH with a range of 77-80 MPH with arm side run. Slider range was 67-68 MPH with tight action and a late break that can be spot for a strike. Change-up was 71-72 MPH with sink. Overall hits the strike zone consistently with good movement on pitches causing hitters to bite. Solid 2019 pitching prospect that coaches should keep an eye on.
Campus Series (July 11, 2017)
Coates stands in at 6-foot-1, 190-pounds. Pitching- The lefty sets up in the middle of the rubber with a simple side step into a high leg kick above the hip crease. Breaks down well from his power position with good separation showing a loose arm swing and being in a good throwing position on front foot strike. Shows a good follow through and repeats mechanics on different pitches keeping his delivery simple and effective. Has a mid-¾ arm slot that creates good run on this fastball. Fastball was recorded at its peak of 81 MPH, 2 MPH shy of his posted 83 MPH last week at the Canisius Campus Series Event. Fastball range was 80-81. Shows good arm side run and spots well. Shows a slider for his secondary pitch with a range of 62-63 MPH with tight action and a late break that can be spot for a strike. Was consistent in the hitting strikes and making hitters swing and miss. Continues to be a promising 2019 prospect with a high ceiling. There is a lot of potential for growth in his mechanics and look for his velocity to increase as he matures.

Preseason All-State (February 20, 2017)

Coates stands a sturdy 6-foot-1, 190 pounds. Great size for his age with an emphasis on strength training to help take him to the next level. Pitching- On the mound he starts to the far third-base side, hands high with a fast tempo to his delivery, a slight squat on his drive leg before he powers towards home. He keeps tucked over his center of gravity, arm-action is down and deep towards the SS, little restrictions, throws from a mid-to-high 3/4 slot,  at times getting his hand on the side of the ball creating cut type fastballs and breaking pitches. Fastball sat 78-80 mph with more left in the tank, curveball 67-69 with more slider feel. Overall, Ben has a real chance on the mound being left-handed and already showing some projectable tools. Serious strength training will only benefit the 2019 graduate.
