3/10/19: Competitive closer for the Cardinal who earned the win on Saturday by pitching 2.2 scoreless innings of relief. After hitting some barrels in his first two-thirds of an inning, he settled in, got stronger with each out and retired the last seven in a row. His stuff was very similar to my look last summer with the USA CNT. Has an aggressive, drop-n-drive delivery and a loose arm. How he does it reminds me of Kevin Appier, former Kansas City Royals starting pitcher. With a low-90s sinking fastball and a 79-81 mph slider from a low three-quarter slot, he kept the ball down in the zone. Overall, he doesn't have dominant stuff, but what separates him from the many other right-handed pitchers in the year's draft is his grit and strike throwing ability (averages 2.5 BB/9 and 12 SO/9 in his college career). He wants the ball and loves to compete. (Seifert)
11/4/18: Large frame with long limbs and strength throughout; high waist with defined legs and chest in mature build. Narrow, tall stance on mound with hands starting at face. Hands and eyes go down to waist, lifting upon high front knee showing strong posture before dropping and separating his hands while driving down the hill; longer arm action with high front elbow while back elbow shows behind back before late mid- release. Arm is loose and works in time with body showing whippy extension over stiff front leg; shows long extension downhill with ball looking harder and jumping on hitters. Fastball 90-92 mph, topped at 93 with angled run to armside and flatter angle to gloveside. Angle to glove side led to some contact during outing while being more effective to the armside. Slider 79-81 mph, above average with late lateral tilt; short action showing ability to break down through zone or break off plate. Good feel for pitch with the ability to use both as an early count strike, as well as putaway to finish. Changeup 80-81 mph showing small armside fade; average pitch that flashed better when turning over and getting pitch under RHH or falling away from LHH. All three of his pitches tunnel off the same release point, moving in different directions at the plate. Control had ups and downs; found more of the plate early before pitches started having better action and missing barrels later in his outing. (Ozella)
7/2/18: Aggressive, strong bodied reliever with a drop and very little drive delivery. Not much backside fire to his finish. Separates his hands low, near his back knee (similar to ex-MLer Kevin Appier) and throws with plenty of effort from a low three-quarters slot. Kept his 91-94 mph fastball down in the zone and elevated when he wanted. Some sink on the fastball, but very little down plane which is due to his delivery. Mixed in a hard, sweeping slurve at 80-84 mph and an occasional 82-84 mph change-up. Competed, missed bats and got big outs. Potential Day Two selection for the 2019 draft. (Seifert)
