You can definitely tell that the LSU commit has been working in the weight room this off-season, as he showed up more physical than our last look. Vanek recorded a max exit velocity of 94 mph, showing middle-pull side power during BP. He also showed off arm strength from the OF by recording a positional velocity of 90 mph. We didn't get to see the southpaw hop on the mound, due to him having thrown a day prior to the event, but it was good to see his offensive abilities and he showed why he's one of the top two-way prospects in the 2023 class.
5/03/20
Vanek’s ascension into the upper echelon of players in the 2023 class does not appear to be slowing down as his all-around athleticism promises much more to come. The wiry-athletic, 6-foot-2, 160-pounder boasts true two-way potential with a smooth stroke from the left side at the plate, and a quick arm on the mound. While his flat path and ability to work gap-to-gap in the box would make for a highly sought position player, Vanek’s upside on the mound might ultimately have college coaches salivating for his Friday Night potential. With a short, quick arm that comfortably worked 82-84 in a January bullpen to go along with feel for spin, Vanek will likely see an uptick in velocity as the summer goes along. Combine all the athleticism and tools with the fact that he plays for a storied Barbe HS program that has produced a multitude of talented prospects, and you can count on the fact that he will be able to develop over the next few years.
