Johnson continued to increase his draft stock with an impressive outing for Team Indiana. Long, lean projectable pitchers frame at 6-foot-6, 195 pounds. The right-hander was 88-91 with life on his fastball. Works predominantly from the stretch. High 3/4 arm action with above average arm speed, shorter arm stroke; easy effort in the delivery. Breaking ball has developed into a potential swing and miss pitch at the next level; 12/6 shape with depth at 73-75; a much improved pitch from when we saw him earlier in the year. 3IP, 6K, 3H, 1R, 2BB.
5/6/2019 Spring Scout Blog: Long, lean projectable pitchers frame at 6-foot-6, 190 pounds. Works predominantly from the stretch. Medium, high 3/4 arm action with above average arm speed. Tall balance point, fairly easy effort in the delivery. Fastball ranged from 85-89, topping out at 90 with life. When he misses, tends to miss up in the zone. Creates good angle when able to keep the ball down. With better use of the lower half should see an even bigger increase in velocity. Breaking ball is still in the developmental stage at 69-71. Flashed a few breaking balls with good shape and depth in the zone, but will need to learn to throw the pitch with more intent to be a true out pitch. One of the top uncommitted arms in the 2020 class. Went six innings allowing one hit, two runs while striking out nine. Followed up Monday's outing by throwing a complete game five hit shutout with 11 strikeouts in the Marion County championship Friday night. In that game his fastball sat 85-89 early and threw the breaking ball for more of a strike.
2/16/2019: Ty Johnson, RHP/3B, Lawrence North HS, 2020, 6 foot 6, 190 pounds, has that projectable long lean pitchers body. Throws from a high slot with medium to long arm action. Fastball had down angle and was straight and sat 80-84. Curveball was slow and had 12/6 shape and sat 62-65. CH showed some sink at 72-75. Ty was up to 84 without a ton of effort and still has plenty of room to add weight and velocity. He threw all 3 of his pitches for strikes. Strong follow this spring and summer.
6/5/2018:Hits from right side, crouch setup from a big frame. Long stride to the baseball with average bat speed, level to uphill bat path. Showed ability to use all parts of the field. On the mound showed good upside from a 6'5 projectable frame. Pitches from high arm slot, clean delivery with an easy quick arm, works downhill. FB showed good angle to the plate at 79-82 with some life. CB flashed late action with depth. Nice upside for the 2020.
