Uncommitted. 6-foot, 165 pounds. This ‘22 Junior Future Gamer was already highly regarded by our scouting staff, but he’s already taken another step as a player in his 1st HS season. He not only looks stronger, but just more coordinated overall as he’s grown into his body more. Being so young, his swing mechanics and defensive actions will only continue to look more pro as he continues to sculpt his game. His swing is noticeably more well sequenced, especially in his separation timing and what he’s separating with. Last year, Sweat’s hands would load during his negative move, making the hands stagnant during his forward move and causing some drift. Now he keeps his hands active in one compact spot (where they start in the setup), only loading back in his forward move at the same pace of his stride. As you can see with the 2 83 mph SL’s he barreled below, this is a monumental adjustment for his ability to hit quality breaking balls. When comparing last year's PBR highlights to the ones from last night, you can see that the chest now loads the hands for him instead of the other way around. The result is a much more stacked backside at landing that creates ideal linear connection. Better linear connection equals a more efficient, effortless swing with consistently higher exit velocity. What impressed me even more than his adjustments in connection and sequencing was his ability to barrel 2 hard SL’s with 2 different lower half moves. As a FR vs 90-91 mph, Colton obviously was sitting FB in preparation for velocity he hasn’t seen often AB 1 - That's why it was shocking to see him hang a mini leg kick to decelerate and get on time with a late breaking SL. AB 2 - Went from the leg kick to a quiet toe tap, and had an even better barrel off another 83 mph SL. To see a 9th grader adjust his lower half move in two different AB’s and square up a college level SL successfully is extremely rare. His front hip leads the stride very well and creates optimal lower half momentum from his base doubling as he gains gound. This perfect stride length allows Colton to routinely catch the ball out in front of the plate for power production. After seeing his pitch recognition, hitting aptitude, body control, ability to decelerate, and fearlessness I almost all in. The final thing I needed to see out of Sweat to solidify him as a pure hitter was his effort level in the swing vs big velocity. He was able to time up multiple FB’s (although not in fair territory) at about 80% effort, showing his true advancement as a hitter. Sweat also turned multiple double plays from SS, and is very smooth as a defender from the position.
