2018 Underclass Area Code Games - Uncommitted. I thought that this kid was one of the big winners of the weekend. He's a beast at 6-1, 205 with natural, thicker strength. Left-handed stroke with quick hands, and has the ability to do serious damage. Took a strong round of BP, and all contact was noticeably louder than the rest of the squad. Easy lag in the zone with strength to the opposite gap. Lower-half leaks some, but the lag allows him to stay in the zone. Higher hands with easy juice. Also was athletic around the bag at first. Had been up to 91 the week before, but was 86-89 touching 90.
7/1/18 - Vuaghns is just a freak athlete. At 6-foot-2 206-pounds the two-sport standout (Vaughns is a Power 5 level recruit in football) is raw but incredibly projectable in baseball. His arm strength was matched only by Crow-Armstrong in the outfield portion of the workout. During his shortstop work he shows excellent footwork and clean defensive actions. On the mound though is where his future may be. His fastball worked 89-91 and shows late run to the arm side. Vaughns' curveball at 78-79 is a true two-plane pitch and he also showed a changeup at 80-81 mph.
6/1/18 - Vaughns is a guy that we've seen quite a bit this year but it seems every time we see him on the mound he simply gets better and looks more and more like a future professional pitcher. This isn't to discount his ability at shortstop or at the plate, at which they're both above average. But when you see his long, strong, loose & whippy arm, you can't help but project that element of his skill set.
4/27/18 – Uncommitted, 6 foot 2, 200LBS. Vaughns' physical features are obvious at first look. The 2-sport, 2-way (SS), raw, athletic sophomore currently possesses an MLB frame with room for future strength and added muscle growth. Shortstop might be his primary position, but on this day he was pitching. Vaughns appeared in relief, recording the save featuring a 4-pitch mix coming from an over the top delivery. He has an up-tempo wind–up, exhibits solid mechanics, athleticism and intimidating conviction in his pitches. Currently, Vaughns is not a pure strike thrower, but with some minor adjustments his command will improve. FB was heavy and jumps through the zone at 87-90, touching 91, CB was 74-76; CH was deceptive, with some fade at 79-83 and a bowling ball split-finger FB. At times he rushes his delivery, but he does it with intent. Vaughns is a prospect with a high ceiling.
