2018 Area Code Underclass Games: Friday Notebook
August 13, 2018
Day One at the Underclass Area Code in Compton brought together the elite and highly-touted prospects in a talented 2020 class (and 2021) to square off against each other in game action. Below are some game notes from the day with extended reports to set a primer for a jam-packed weekend of action:
Brewers-White Sox
The first game of the Area Code Underclass got off to a very slow start as the players appeared to be trying to wake up throughout the first inning or two. However, as the sun rose throughout the game, the action picked up, and provided for a solid game with multiple players bringing some energy to the game:
AJ Vukovich, CIF, East Troy HS, WI
Vukovich, a Louisville recruit, emerged as one of the top prospects in the 2020 class, last year, when he barreled balls against players a year older than him. It appears that he finds himself at home at the Urban Youth Academy in SoCal as he picked up where he left off with a rousing home run to left field before crushing a flyout to deep left-centerfield in his final at-bat. Long-limbed at 6-foot-5, 205-pound, Vukovich shows excellent control of his body, and especially his quick hands which work directly to the ball. Lean and athletic, the ball jumps off the barrel which works slightly uphill through the zone.
Christian Knapczyk, SS, Joliet Catholic HS, IL
Knapczyk, a Louisville recruit, continues to impress on the diamond with his twitchy-athleticism and high-energy play. The 5-foot-9, 150-pound, left-handed hitter had two hits including a hustle double to left field that he challenged the left fielder on, and was successful. He bounces around the infield with confident hands, and has natural athleticism almost looking like a quick point guard.
Jace Bohrofen, OF, Westmoore HS, OK
Uncommitted. Bohrofen may have a chance to be the breakout candidate of this year’s Area Code Underclass after the at-bat’s that he took in the first game of the day. Featuring proportional strength throughout his 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame, the left-hander looked very hitterish in the box, and showed natural feel for the barrel while remaining balanced from a wider setup. His barrel seems to endlessly remain in the zone as it takes a flat path with strength. He hammered a double to the opposite gap in his first at-bat, and then smoked a ball in each of his next three at-bats as well. His smooth swing and confident tracking of pitches should bode well for him as he continues to face stiff competition this week.
